Final Fantasy IX armor

This is a list of armor in Final Fantasy IX. There are three types of armor: headgear, arm protection, and body protection, with various sub-types within each.

The original game was released on four discs for the PlayStation. The later digital releases do not have distinct "parts" like this, though "discs" are still indicated on the file saves. Some equipment pieces are only available within certain time frames, and on which "disc" they are available is still shown in this article.

Disc 1 ends after the boss battles in Burmecia.
Disc 2 ends after the battle outside the Iifa Tree involving the Alexandrian navy.
Disc 3 ends upon gaining the Invincible airship (although the point of no return is going through the Shimmering Island).
Disc 4 is the end where the only remaining story objective is the final dungeon.

Certain equipment pieces give elemental weaknesses that are not noted in the menu. The only way to see whether an equipment piece gives a weakness is to use Scan on the wearer mid-battle. Equipping both element-halving and element-weak equipment together results in damage being roughly 75% of its normal value. Notably, almost all robes make the wearer weak to Fire damage.

Certain equipment pieces affect the wearer's stat growth when they level up. The equipment pieces that have a stat-boosting trait give incremental bonuses when the wearer gains a level, and bequeath permanent stat growth over multiple level ups depending on the number of times the wearer gained a "level up bonus" from an equipment piece that boosts that particular stat. This system resembles how stat growth worked in Final Fantasy VI, but is instead mostly hidden from the player. The best stat-boosting gear is available late into the game, but min-maxing is unnecessary for a normal playthrough; the player can just wear whatever equipment has the best defensive values or equipment that teach new abilities and still be able to defeat any encounter with the right strategy.
