Final Fantasy Artniks is a free-to-play social card collecting game developed by Square Enix and published on GREE's mobile-social gaming platform exclusively in Japan on November 30, 2012. The game was discontinued on August 29, 2014 at 3:00PM (JST).

A second game, Final Fantasy Artniks Dive, was announced on June 30, 2014. It is also a collaboration with GREE and was released in the summer of 2014 for Android and iOS mobile platforms.

Story[]

A crystal summons the player to a distant world ruled by Bahamut and charges them with spinning the tale of the land through meeting many allies, facing many enemies and bearing witness to many miracles.

Upon the player's arrival, they meet Moguro (モグ郎, Mogurō?), a Moogle who helps to guide them on their adventure. As the player embarks on their adventure, they meet Bahamut, who wishes to test their strength in battle. However, Moguro tells the player that they have the unique ability to summon cards.

Moguro aids the player in summoning a card to fight against Bahamut. Although it is apparent the card is no match for Bahamut, reinforcements arrive and the player is able to defeat Bahamut. Upon his defeat, Bahamut is impressed, pointing out that the player is the 'chosen one' and then departs proclaiming that he will watch over the new world that the player creates.

Gameplay[]

The game consists of summoning cards and using them to complete quests and battle against other players. The player begins by choosing a Final Fantasy series between I and XIII from which they wish to receive their first card; a representative Rank R character card from the series.

There are five ranks of cards: N (Normal), R (Rare), R+ (Rare+), SR (Super Rare), SR+ (Super Rare+). The higher the rank, the stronger the card. Cards fall into two categories, character cards (キャラカード, Kyara Kādo?) and equipment cards (そうびカード, Sōbi Kādo?). Character cards have a designated Rank, Attack (攻撃, Kōgeki?), Defense (防御, Bōgyo?), Cost (コスト, Kosuto?) and Elemental Affinities (属性, Zokusei?) (fire, lightning or ice). Cost determines how many BP (battle points) are required to summon a card to player-versus-player battles. Some character cards have Special Effects (特定効果, Tokutei Kōka?) that activate against wanted enemies (手配書エネミー, Tehaisho Enemī?) and Limited-Time Abilities (期間効果, Kikan Kōka?) which are active for the duration of an event. Additionally, character cards ranked Rare and above may possess unique Abilities (アビリティ, Abiriti?) with designated activation rates (熟練度, Jukurendō?). Equipment cards come in the form of offensive and defensive items and generally only have rank, attack and defense values, but may also possess Equipment Abilities (そうびアビリティ, Sōbi Abiriti?)and Limited-Time Abilities. The same equipment card may have different attack and defense values. The player may hold one hundred of each type of card at any given time, with all additional cards going to the player's delivery box.

Character cards begin at level 1 but the player may strengthen them through Enhancement (強化, Kyōka?). Both other character cards as well as equipment cards may be used in the process, provided the player possesses an adequate amount of Gil. While character cards primarily raise the designated card's level, equipment cards are more effective for increasing a card's ability activation rate.

Both types of cards may be obtained from chests in quests and through summoning. There are two modes of summoning: a Normal Summon (ノーマル召喚, Nōmaru Shōkan?) or a Crystal Summon (クリスタル召喚, Kurisutaru Shōkan?). One Normal Summon requires 100 Bravo Points (ブラボーpt, Burabō pt?), while a Crystal Summon may be performed using 100 Coins (purchased with real money) or special tickets obtained from events. The player is able to Normal Summon for free once every new day, as well as once during lunch time (10:00am-3:00pm JST). Crystal Summons have a higher chance of yielding rare and powerful cards. Unwanted cards may be sold for Gil.

In addition to cards, Stone Tablet Fragments (石版のかけら, Sekiban no Kakera?) which are a type of collection item, may also be obtained from quests or PVP battles. There are three series of stone tablets which may be completed an unlimited number of times. If the player obtains six fragments of the same series, they will receive a reward for completing the tablet.

The player has a Level, Action points (行動力, Kōdōryoku?), BP, EXP, and HP values which influence the range of activities they may participate in. Action points, BP and HP are expended through a variety of ways, but there are a number of recovery items which may be used to replenish them. These may be obtained in the cash shop or through completing quests and events. Additionally, Action points and BP replenish at a rate of one point and two points per minute, respectively. The player obtains one Bonus Point (ボーナスポイント, Bōnasu Pointo?) per level gained to distribute in their Action points or BP.

For quests, the player chooses up to three character (A Leader and two Subs) and equipment cards to equip. Character cards participate directly, while equipment cards boost the parameters of characters selected for battle. The length of the quest is displayed in the quest screen, and the player advances at a rate of ten meters per turn. Quests require progressively more Action points and HP may be lost upon encountering enemies. However, the process yields increasing amounts of EXP, which in turn raises the player's level. Defeating enemies fills up the BURST meter and when it's full, the Burst Mode triggers and transforms all lesser enemies into chests. At the end of the quest area is a boss battle, which plays out automatically. The boss and the player's cards take turns attacking when their action bars are full until one party has been defeated. HP may be recovered with items at any point in the quest using the recovery (回復, Kaifuku?) button. Additionally, the player may borrow one card each from up to two friended players for boss battles.

Players can also customize their own deck of up to 11 cards to fight against other players. The player may only summon a number of cards whose Cost do not exceed the player's current BP. The winner obtains ranking points on the game's leaderboard, Stone Tablet Fragments, as well as Mog Medals (モグメダル, Mogu Medaru?), which can be used to play the Mog Bonus (モグボーナス, Mogu Bōnasu?) minigame. Other players may attack the player to steal their Stone Tablet Fragments.

Final Fantasy Artniks also features a number of special events such as: Wanted Monsters, in which players cooperate to defeat difficult foes; Ultimate Quests (アルティメットクエスト, Arutimetto Kuesuto?), which has the player open booby-trapped treasure chests for rewards; and Mission Bingo (ミッションビンゴ, Misshon Bingo?), which requires the player to do quests listed on a bingo sheet.
