Cast of characters[]
(The player names Brandt)
- This stout-hearted village youth doesn't know much about etiquette but he knows right from wrong.
- He likes to take the lead with robust cheer; some people enjoy his enthusiasm, but others think he's just pushy.
(The player names Jusqua)
- This village youth has been spending quite a lot of time in the castle lately.
- He is pragmatic and as sharp as a tack. But he can also be childish and, for some people, a pain in the neck.
(The player names Yunita)
- This dutiful lady warrior of the castle can always be relied upon to carry out orders.
- Her sharp eyes rarely miss a trick, but sometimes she stresses too much over the small stuff.
(The player names Aire)
- This castle princess is bright, cheerful, and loves to talk. She can raise spirits and bring parties to life in the direst of situations.
- On the other hand, everyone agrees that she is completely self-centered. But then, she would be, being a princess and all…
Horne[]
(Brandt's house)
???: … … Brandt?
(A boy is being awoken by his mother)
Kuore: Wake up, Brandt! Come on, lazy bones. It's time you were out and about!
- →Okay
- →Not yet
(Okay)
Brandt: I know, I know. You told me a thousand times. Dad went on his first adventure when he was my age…
Kuore: Tsk. Today's the day you officially become a grown-up. Or have you forgotten? You have to go to the castle and pay your respects to the king!
Kuore: What are you waiting for? Today's the day you officially become a grown-up. You have to go to the castle and pay your respects to the king. Take the path straight through the back of the town to the castle. And no dilly-dallying on the way!
(There is a red parrot on the kitchen table)
Ankhel: Brand, Brandt!
(Outside)
Farmer: Kuore is quite the woman. She raised you all by herself.
Woman in red: I'm sure I saw spell books in the castle. But magic is forbidden in Horne, so it must have been my imagination.
Guard: You leaving town? Well, take good care. There are monsters out there! Here, this might help keep you safe…
- You received a Phoenix Down!
Woman in blue: That's right, today's your birthday, isn't it? What a fine young man you've become! Here's a present for you. Take care out there!
- You received a flask of Potion!
Man in west side of town: If you're going to the North Caves, don't forget to take a Torch!

- →No
Man in white outside the inn: Hello, Brandt. Finally awake, are you? To reach the castle, keep going on this path toward the back of the town.
Man in blue near the inn: The more dangerous monsters roam at night. When you get into trouble, hurry back to town and take a rest.

Woman in northwest side of town: I once saw a giant monster like a bull or something in the North Caves.
Man in northeast side of town: Jusqua has always been a handful, even when he was a wee one. Young Brandt, if you're going to go adventuring, as I suspect you will, this little bottle could be a life saver…[sic]

(Windmill to the north of town)
Man: The sign describes the proper way to take care of sheep. Read it well!
- Sheep are the pride of our realm.
- First, pat the sheep's nose.
- Second, stroke the right flank.
- Third, stroke the left flank.
- Last, tug the tail…
- That's the way to handle sheep!
(Windmill door)
It is locked.
(Outside Horne Castle)
Left guard: Are you here to see the king, Brandt? You'd better behave yourself then!
Right guard: To be recognized as a grown-up, you must attend a formal audience with the king.
(Horne Castle)
Left guard next to fountain: Careful AP management (that's "action points" to you laymen) is the key to battle. Use Boost when you can!
Right guard next to fountain: The new recruits are still wet behind the ears. I'm not sure they're ready for a mission outside the castle.
(Guards' dorm room)
Sleeping guard: Zzz… Zzz… What's for breakie, Mummy?
(Dungeon)
(Dungeon door)
It is locked.
Guard: Sorry, but no admittance beyond this point.
(Guards' storage room)
Guard: She must be one heck of a witch, to have the king shaking in fear like he is.
(The king's chamber)
Chambermaid: …! …Oh, it's you, Brandt. Gracious, you nearly gave me a heart attack.
(Carino's room)
Chambermaid: At least Princess Carino is safe. We must be thankful for small mercies.
(The queen's chamber)
Chambermaid: These were once the queen's chambers. Even now, I still look after them every day.
(Princess Aire's room)
Chambermaid: This is Princess Aire's room. You're not allowed in here!
(Throne room)
Left guard: You make sure you're on your best behavior when in the presence of the king.
Right guard: You know what really gets me psyched up? A monster hurting my friends, that's what!
Carino: Please, Brandt, won't you save my sister, Aire?
Minister: Princess Aire brings joy to the court. Her smile lights up the castle.
King Horne: How dare she? That witch threatens not just me, but my beloved Aire, too! Why, if I… Ah, is that you, Brandt? Good, good, I'm glad you're here. The Witch of the North has carried my Aire away! Brandt, will you please help your old king? Go to the Witch's Mansion in the north and see what's happening. I sent my soldiers, but none have returned.
- →Okay
- →Nope
(Okay)
Brandt: Leave it to me! That mansion lies beyond the caves in the north. Should be easy to get to.
King Horne: Splendid! I knew I could count on you. Here, this might come in handy…
- You received a Steel Sword!
Carino: Please, won't you save my sister, Aire?
Minister: If you are to battle beasts, you must equip yourself with weapons. This might help you in your quest to save Princess Aire.
- You received 100 gil!
Left guard: If you want to slay monsters quick and easy, you've got to learn their vulnerabilities.
(The king's chamber)
Chambermaid: I hear that you, too, have been sent after the witch. Go carefully, young friend.
(Aire's room)
Maid: Are you going to save Princess Aire? Then take this with you!
- You obtained a Phoenix Down!
(Town of Horne)
Man outside multiplayer house: I was a soldier once, in the castle. You see, back then… Huh? You have to go?
Woman in blue: If you're going to fight monsters, make sure you equip weapons and armor! I hope my boy is safe and sound…
Town guard: You planning on fighting monsters? Then don't forget your Potions!
(Brandt's house)
Kuore: You're going to find the Witch of the North? Well, I can't stop you, I suppose. Here. Take this ring with you. It used to belong to your father.
- You received the Inherited Ring!
Kuore: Did you meet Jusqua? Don't be out too late now, do you hear? (nighttime)
Ankhel: You can do it, Brandt! You can do it, Brandt!
(Inspecting bed)
- Do you want to take a nap?
- →Okay
- →Not yet.
North Caves & the Witch's Mansion[]
(North Caves 1F South)
Left guard: I was told to expect you. Go on through, and be careful in there!
Right guard: The caves are pitch black. Do you have a Torch to light your way?
(North Caves B1)
(A monster ambushes Brandt)
Brandt: Whoa!
Jusqua: Careful, Brandt! Without magic, you'll never defeat beasts like that. I guess I'm going to have to help you out. I'll just boost my AP and conjure up some spells!
(Brandt and Jusqua defeat a Minotaur together)
Jusqua: Brandt, it's too dangerous for you here. Go back to Horne.
- →Okay
- →No way
(No way)
Brandt: No way, I came here to do a job, and I'm going to see it through!
Jusqua: *shrug* Okay. But don't say I didn't warn you.
- Jusqua joins the party!
(Witch's Mansion 1F)
Left fallen guard: Ungh. W-watch out for the…really enormous…monster. Cast s-spells…boost your AP…and use the Menu to recover your h-h-health…
Right fallen guard: We tried to cast a spell…but the monster…the monster was too quick… We knew the danger… Auto Mode is just s-so easy… Press the X Button, and that's it… …Don't make the same mistake we did. Just remember, touch controls w-won't work when you're in Auto Mode…
(Witch's Mansion 2F)
Fallen guard: Wh-who are you?
Brandt: Reinforcements from Horne, reporting for duty!
Fallen guard: Er, great…but you're too late… My whole unit…wiped out…*sob* No one's left…except…Lady Aire's companion Yunita. She might still be alive.
Brandt: Sounds bad. We better do something, fast!
Jusqua: Easy does it. I'm sure they're still okay. Let's look for the witch. We find her, we find our hostages…
(Middle walkway)
Fallen guard: Take that Cure spell and use it well. Don't forget to set it up on your Abilities Menu… Then you can use it any time you need it—as long as you have enough AP, that is.
(Right room)
- Do you wish to light the candle?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
You hear the sound of a door opening.
(Middle walkway)
Yunita: D-don't worry about me. Run and save yourselves!
(Brandt and Jusqua defeat the Orc and Goblins)
Yunita: Th-thank you so much. I really thought I was done for. But now I have to continue my mission. Farewell.
- →Bye
- →Wait!
(Wait!)
Brandt: …But wait! You can't go alone. You almost died just now.
Yunita: It's MY fault the princess was kidnapped. It wouldn't be fair to allow anyone else to get involved.
Jusqua: We're already involved. The king sent us when you were late coming back.
Yunita: Oh. I'm sorry.
Jusqua: Look, let's team up and find the princess together, okay?
Yunita: Really? You would do that for me?
- Yunita joins the party!
(The door in Witch's Mansion 1F is now open, leading up, eventually to the roof)
Aire: Ungh… Hm? Where am I?
(Aire spots Yunita)
Aire: You're LATE! Look at the state I'm in! My dress is all dirty, I'm dying of thirst… Where HAVE you been?
Yunita: I'm sorry, my Lady! I'm so sorry!
Aire: And who are you? Do you want something?
- →Yes
- →No
(No)
Jusqua: No, m'lady. We're just here to babysit you. Not much of a job, but someone has to do it.
Aire: Wh-why, the impudence…!
Yunita: Shush, now. You're upset and it's all my fault, Lady Aire. I take full responsibility.
Aire: As well you should! I've had a TERRIBLE day, let me tell you, and I think I'm ready to go home now.
- Aire joins the party!
(As the party is about to leave, a witch appears on the mansion roof)
The Witch: My name is Louhi, but your kind knows me as the Witch of the North.
Louhi: I cannot allow you to leave. The princess belongs to me.
Aire: I beg your pardon!?
Louhi: So states the contract, little princess. And we witches do not enter into contracts lightly. Come now. If you dare challenge the pact, you shall feel the sharp edge of my claws!
(Louhi transforms into a dark griffon-type monster called Greaps, which the foursome defeat)
Brandt: We did it! We defeated the witch!
Aire: Well done, Yunita!
Yunita: Lady Aire, are you unharmed?
Jusqua: Come on. Let's get out of here.
Brandt: Whoa…!
(A crystal appears before the party)
- O children of hope…
Party: A talking crystal!?
(Credits roll)
- The four heroes were embraced by the light.
- Filled with the spirit and purpose of the crystal,
- they steeled their hearts for the quest ahead.
- The world cannot be allowed to fall into darkness!
- Heroes of Light, set forth on your journey!
- Forge new hope from the light of the crystal!
Aire: I-I must be hallucinating… Yunita, do you see this, too?
Yunita: Er, yes. At least, I think I do…
- Hark now, and know that the forces of evil seek to engulf us all.
- As the Dark flows from the hidden world within, our would-be savior stands helpless, bereft of power.
- O, children of hope!
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Wayfarer!
- Each crown is a symbol of hope. With hearts indomitable heroes stand tall and strong.
- Enter the magic circle now, and to safety you shall fly.
- Go forth, Heroes of Light, and seek your adventure!
(The crystal disappears and there is a magic circle on the roof of the mansion)
Brandt: A crown? Does this mean I'll become even more super powerful?
Jusqua: What good is a crown? Well, if you wear it (use the Menu), you'll be granted new abilities.
Yunita: Why did the witch take Lady Aire? Who would agree to a contract with such a person?
Aire: If you want, you can make me the main character that you control. Press the X Button to open the Menu. Press the A Button, and then left or right to change characters.
(North Caves B1)
Brandt: You see those slots in the crown? You can insert gems into them to enhance the crown's powers.
Jusqua: Okay. So the person who wears the crown gains access to the crown's special abilities, right?
Yunita: Lady Aire! Have you donned the crown of the Wayfarer yet? I urge you to do so!
Aire: Ah, I get it! To use abilities, you have to open the Menu and set them up in your Abilities Menu.
Cursed Horne[]
(The party returns to Horne to find all villagers, and even all animals besides Brandt's parrot, turned to stone)
(Inspecting any petrified villager)
There is no response. It's like trying to talk to a statue.
Brandt: Is this happening because we fought the witch?
Jusqua: Could this have something to do with the witch's contract?
Yunita: What's going on here? I thought we had defeated the witch…
Aire: Everyone has turned to stone! What about my father? My sister!?
(Brand's house)
(Brandt's mother is petrified, but the parrot is still active)
Ankhel: Kuore in trouble! Kuore in trouble!
(Everyone is likewise petrified inside the castle, besides an investigation team from Liberte)
(Dungeon)
Investigator: It's all very mysterious. Horne must have been up to something shady…
(Storage room)
Investigator: If we can just find one member of the Horne royal family…
(Throne room)
(The statues of Princess Carino and Minister are found but the king is nowhere to be seen)
Investigator: Hello. Where did you come from? I'm head of the Baneful Magick Investigation Unit out of Liberte. I'm sorry to report that Horne has been stricken by an evil curse. For your own protection, we can take you back with us to Liberte. You would be much safer there.
- →Okay
- →No
(Okay)
Jusqua: Horne's done for. I'm going to Liberte.
(No)
Brandt: We can't just run away and leave the town like this!
Jusqua: What are you going to do about it? Face it. Horne's done for. I'm going to Liberte.
Brandt: But what about the people here? We have to help them!
Jusqua: WE don't have to do anything, but YOU are welcome to do what you like.
Yunita: Erm, I hate to impose…but would you please take Lady Aire with you to Liberte? I must stay in Horne, too. I can't help thinking that I'm partly to blame for this.
- Jusqua and Aire leave the party.
Jusqua: Good luck, kid! I don't expect we'll be seeing each other again.
Aire: *sniffle* Yunita… W-will I see you again…?
Investigator: It's much too dangerous here in Horne. Who knows what will happen next? You'd best leave, and soon!
(Carino's room)
Investigator: What on earth happened here? Is this the curse of a witch?
(Lobby)
Investigator: King Horne should know what's going on. But I have no idea where he is!
(Dorms)
Investigator: Did the king really enter into a contract with a witch!?
(The investigators from Liberte will run the town services while all occupants bar one parrot are turned to stone)
Investigator in north end of town: If the petrification is the work of sorcery, you may find a rare cure in Guera, the magic kingdom of the eastern desert.
Investigator in northwest side of town: I heard that the magical kingdom of Guera was cursed and buried by the sands of the desert.
Investigator near multiplayer house: A people called the Moon Folk used to live in the desert. They're long gone now, or so I hear…
Yunita: I…I HAVE to save Horne.
Brandt: Don't be so blue. You'll be fine as long as you've got me on your side!
Investigator outside Brandt's house: Folk say that a ghost sometimes appears in the eastern desert at night. 'Course, I don't believe 'em…
(Storage shop)
Investigator: If you want, you can leave your excess items in storage.
(Multiplayer house)
Investigator: Do you want to play a multiplayer game?
(Shop)
Investigator: If you're going adventuring, I can provide you with the supplies you need. Not for free, mind.
Desert & Guera[]
(While crossing the desert, Brandt and Yunita come across a traveler's camp at nightfall)
???: Welcome, strangers. I don't often meet people in these parts.
Krinjh: My name is Krinjh, and I am one of the last of the Moon Folk.
(Brandt explains their purpose of crossing the desert)
Krinjh: I see. You seek the magic kingdom of Guera in the hope of lifting the curse that has stricken Horne. Then you must go to the Moonlight Tower and collect the moonshards. The tower stands in the northwest of the desert. Come. I shall guide you there.
- Krinjh joins the party!
(Moonlight Tower 5F)
(Moonlight pours in from a hole in the ceiling onto an altar)
Krinjh: Behold! The moonshards come to ground, dancing on beams of silver light…
(Light concentrates on the altar)
Brandt: Cool!
Yunita: They're so beautiful.
Krinjh: We just need to collect them…
- You obtained the Merkmal!
Krinjh: Now you have the Merkmal, you can press the Y Button to find the town of Guera.
(Guera)
Shopkeeper: Salutations! It's been many a year since we welcomed visitors from another land.
Man near a large urn: The town of Guera is a center of magical research and study.
Woman under a canopy: Since the Sand Devil appeared, no one has been able to cross the sands. The desert has become our prison.
Weapon seller: Well, well, well! You came here from across the sands?
Man in north end of town: For many a long year, the Sand Devil's curse has kept the town sealed away in the desert.
Man in northeast end of town: Since the curse was placed on the desert, all of us in Guera are stuck here until we die.
Man next to water element: The desert has never been the same since the Moon Folk died out.
Krinjh: With the Merkmal in hand, you need only press the Y Button to see where Guera lies.
Brandt: Krinjh? Yeah, I guess he's kinda strong.
Yunita: It's a great comfort, having Krinjh at our side.
(Residence in west side of town)
Girl in pink: No one can defeat the Sand Devil. I mean, it's made of sand—how can you hurt it with a sword?
Woman in purple: They say that no one can pass through the caves to the north, not without the aid of a fairy.
(Inn)
Man: I wonder if you can find ALL the treasure I've hidden in this town. (Note: Most treasure-hiders have the same dialogue)
Innkeeper: Salutations! To stay a night in our inn, it shall cost you 20 gil. Will you stay?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: May you dream of the desert moon!
(Storage shop)
Storekeeper: Shall we take care of your goods?
Man: What do you think of the urns outside? Every day I polish them until they shine!
(Magic shop)
Spell seller: Salutations! Do you seek books of magic?
(Residence in northeast side of town)
Man: For some reason, King Guera has confiscated all water magic tomes.
(Guera Palace outskirts)
Left guard: Travelers, you say? We don't see many of your kind around here.
Right guard: This is the palace of King Guera. No running around or horseplay, do you hear?
(Guera Palace)
Right lady: The Magic Circle of Transportation will whisk you to the upper floors.
Left lady: Salutations, and welcome to Guera Palace. Here we study the mysteries of magic.
(Next floor)
Left guard: Soon you will be in the presence of the king. Be on your best behavior, please!
Right guard: You be on your best behavior when you meet the king!
(Left room)
Woman: Enormous magic power is concentrated in the caverns beneath Guera.
Man: That Sand Devil is invincible! How are you supposed to hurt running sand?
(Guards' room)
Guard: If you're going to fight Sand Devils, take a Rock Shield with you… At least, that's what my grandfather always told me.
Guard: When you're paralyzed, there's not much you can do to fight back. Still, the affliction heals over time, so try not to panic.
Guard blocking a door: The very center of Guera's magical expertise lies beyond. Of COURSE you can't go in!
(Right room)
Woman: The invention of spell books helped make Guera one of the most prosperous nations in the world.
Researcher: White magic draws its power from the spellcaster's Spirit.
(Library)
Researcher: Black magic draws its power from spellcaster's Intellect.
Researcher: Water spells can harden sand. Such magic may make it possible to defeat the Sand Devil.
Researcher blocking a door: The very center of Guera's magical expertise lies beyond. Of COURSE you can't go in!
(Throne room)
Man on the left: Mind your manners in the palace!
Man on the right: Anyone can use a magic book. But the greater your Intellect and Spirit, the more power you can weave into the spell.
Man by the king: With the Merkmal in hand, you will be able to find the castle of sand in the east.
King Guera: Horne is cursed? That is terrible! I wish I could do something, but my kingdom is suffering under its own monster tribulations. Perhaps if you were able to solve our little problem…?
- →Okay
- →No
(Okay)
Brandt: Okay. We help you out with your monster problem, and you help Horne in exchange. Deal?
Krinjh: The king wants us to find and kill the Sand Devil.
King Guera: Yes. IF you can rid us of that pestilent Sand Devil, we will be very much in your debt. In return, I will do everything in my power to aid you!
(Town of Guera)
Krinjh: We will need water magic if we are to do battle with the Sand Devil.
Yunita: Brandt, it's only going to get more dangerous now. Perhaps Krinjh and I should go on ahead?
Brandt: Hey, I'm just as strong as that Krinjh guy!
(Left residence)
Woman in purple: Have you visited Guera's palace? Many areas within are forbidden to visitors, but at night there are fewer guards…
Girl in pink: If you want to sneak into the palace, try going at night. The guards relax their vigil then.
(Guera in nighttime)
Man in north side of town: The legendary Merkmal could guide you to Quicksand Castle, where the Sand Devil lurks.
(Guera Palace in nighttime)
Guard blocking access to throne room: The king is resting. If you want an audience, come back during the day.
Guard: The king has retired for the day. Please leave, quietly.
(Left room)
Guard: The extinct Moon Folk were supremely skilled at wielding enhanced swords. (Context: Krinjh is a Spell Fencer)
(Guards' room)
Sleeping guard: Zzz… Curse you, *snort* Sand Devil…
Guard: That Sand Devil is invincible! If there was some way we could harden the sand, then maybe we'd have a chance. But how?
(Right room)
Researcher: My obsession is black magic. I study it night and day.
(Library)
Researcher: I study white magic night and day. It is my obsession!
Researcher: In Guera, we are dedicated to the pursuit of magical research.
(The party sneaks through the now-unguarded doors to the the caverns beneath the palace, and find the Water Tome inside a treasure chest)
(The party comes across a chasm)
- Once you jump, you won't be able to get back.
- Are you sure?
- →Okay
- →Not yet
(Note: Okay will lead to a shortcut back out)
(Quicksand Castle 6F)
Brandt: Whoa! What's that!?
Krinjh: Be careful, Brandt, for that is the Sand Devil we seek! Yunita, prepare your spells! We must harden the beast with water spells, or we shall never defeat it!
(The party fights the Sand Devil and uses Water magic on it)
- The sand becomes hard!
(The heroes defeat the Sand Devil, who disappears into light and is replaced by an elven woman with silver hair)
Krinjh: Ariadne!
Ariadne: Krinjh, I was so…angry with you. I just wanted to shut you away forever, you and that horrible desert.
Krinjh: I'm sorry, Ariadne. I always hoped it would be you who killed me, not that king of Guera.
Brandt & Yunita: …Huh!?
Krinjh: But it's all right now. You don't have to suffer anymore. Your body will return to the sand of the moon, and your soul to its light… It took a long time, but I've come to you at last. We will guard the desert of the moon together and forever!
Ariadne: Oh, my Krinjh!
Krinjh: Yunita, Brandt…thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The source of all magic lies in the land or Arbor. There you will find the key to saving Horne.
(The crystal appears before Brandt and Yunita)
- O, children of hope!
- Through the world the darkness deepens.
- Into souls the weakness steals, turning men against each other.
- But know thee, too, in their hearts lives a love, brave and true.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crowns of the White Mage and Black Mage!
- Go forth, Heroes of Light, your adventure has begun!
(Back in the Quicksand Castle, both Krinjh and Ariadne are gone and there is a magic circle on the floor)
Brandt: Argh, rats! I wasn't much help after all.
Yunita: Ah, poor Krinjh. He must have been so lonely…
(Guera Palace)
Guard: The palace is closed to all visitors. Go book yourself into the inn and try again tomorrow.
(Brand and Yunita stay the night at the Guera inn, and Brand wakes up in the middle of the night)
Yunita: …Zzz… …Krinjh…
Innkeeper: Can you not sleep?
(Brand leaves the inn alone)
Brandt: *sigh* I'm still not any closer to helping the people of Horne. I wasn't much use against that Sand Devil, either. If only I had stronger magic and better crowns. Then I could take out all the bad guys myself… Bam! Pow!
(A white cat approaches him with an item)
Brandt: Hm? What's this? Is this a map of the world? Cool! So Guera is here…and Arbor is here… Wait! Didn't Krinjh say something about Arbor? I know! I should go to Arbor. They'll be able to help lift the curse from Horne. I'm going there right now! sorry to ditch you, Yunita, but it's time I struck out on my own… Huh? Are you coming, too, little one?
- A cat joins the party!
Liberte & Pirate Hideout & Whirlpool[]
- Let's wind the clock back a little…
- Jusqua and Aire had placed themselves under the protection of the Baneful Magick Investigation Unit.
- After a lengthy sea voyage, they eventually landed at a faraway town of Liberte.
(Liberte Town)
Aire: Argh! This place is crowded and dirty and BORING! I want better food! I want to buy some nice clothes! This is my first trip abroad and I can't even go SHOPPING!
Jusqua: What do you expect, princess? We're refugees. We should be grateful they took us in. At least they gave us a place to stay.
Aire: Are you joking? I'm a VIP! The second princess of the kingdom of Horne!
Jusqua: I told you to keep quiet about that.
- →Okay
- →Phooey!
(Okay)
Aire: I know you did. But why?
Jusqua: I have a bad feeling about all this. I just think it's best we lay low for a while.
Aire: But that doesn't mean I have to stay in this stinky little room the WHOLE time. I'm going out, and don't try to stop me!
(Phooey!)
Aire: Oh, phooey. I'm bored out of my skull. I'm going out, whether you approve or not!
(Aire's bed)
- Do you want to take a nap?
- →Okay
- →Not yet
(Aire goes out into the town)
Woman near Apollo's house: There's a lighthouse at the top of the island, but it's locked tight and no one has the key.
Woman near the item shop: Something terrible happened to Horne, didn't it? These days, not even beautiful Liberte feels safe.
Man near the locked lighthouse: Our town is chock full of great art, but the greatest works of all were created by Pione.
Museum guard: Those blasted pirates made off with all the artworks.
Boy: So, tell me. What kind of place is Horne?
Artist near the inn: Among the treasures that the pirates took is Pione's masterpiece, the Liberte Vase.
(Lighthouse)
It is locked.
(Art museum)
- There's a slot in the pedestal. Something probably fits in there.
Official: The whole town of Liberte is up in arms about the pirate situation.
Artist: Liberte has long been renowned as a place where artists gather.
(Throne room)
Investigator: Don't you remember me? I was with the Baneful Magick Investigation Unit.
King Liberte: Ah, you must be one of the survivors from Horne. The Chief Inspector told me all about you. I want you to think of Liberte as your own country. Feel free to come and go as you please.
(Item shop)
Shopkeeper (clothes): Well, hello there! Are you looking for some nice new clothes?
Shopkeeper (items): Does anything tickle your fancy?
(Apollo's house [residence to the northwest])
Musa: My nephew Apollo has become very quiet. I'm terribly worried.
Apollo: I HATE those pirates! Th-they took Mum…and Dad…and…*sob*
Aire: Why, that's terrible!
Apollo: Please, can you help me?
Apollo: *sob* Mama and Papa…have been kidnapped…b-by pirates!
(Inn)

- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Woman: Splendid! Let me prepare our best suite for you.
(No)
Woman: Do come back if you change your mind.
Man: You know the whirlpool that appears only at night? Well, some say there's serious treasure hidden within.
(Liberte Port)
Woman on a boat: Here in Liberte, a whirlpool appears at night in the stretch of water between the mainland and the island.
Man near the multiplayer house: Liberte is home to artists that gather here from all over the world. It's also a popular tourist destination.

Pirate under a tree: Our hideout be on high alert. Without the password you ain't gettin' in, me matey. You want to know the secret password? Arrr, that I canna tell you!
Official on the port square: Those pirates are part of Captain Drake's motley crew. Drake would be the first to admit he loves plundering treasure, but I never took him to be the type to kidnap innocents.
Man in south side of port: The tide comes in at night and a whirlpool hides the causeway.
Official near the inn: This is the free town of Liberte, center of art and culture.
(Inn)
Innkeeper: Why, hello! Our rooms cost 20 gil a night. Would you like to spend the night?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: Thank you, and sweet dreams!
Boy: I wonder if you can find ALL the treasures I've hidden in this town. (Note: Most treasure-hiders give the same dialogue)
(Item shop)
Shopkeeper: Does anything tickle your fancy?
(Storage shop)
Storekeeper: Shall we take care of your belongings?
(Jusqua and Aire's house back in Liberte Town)
Jusqua: Say what? Pirates!?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Aire: Yes, pirates.
Jusqua: …Forget it. We're foreigners here. It's none of our business.
Aire: You're a subject of Horne, aren't you?
Jusqua: Er, yeah. So?
Aire: Then you should know that I am the second princess of the realm. That means you have to do what I say!
Jusqua: All right, all right. Just stop shrieking at me, okay?
- Jusqua joins the party!
Jusqua: So, supposedly the pirate hideout is near a cove to the east.
Aire: We defeat the pirates and rescue Apollo's parents. Then we get first dibs on the pirate treasure, right?
(Nighttime Liberte)
(Multiplayer shop)
Man: Lots of animals travel back and forth through the woods in the west.
(The heroes purchase a Music Score and the crystal appears before them)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- How mighty you have grown.
- Long, so long have we waited for this blessed day to come.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Musician!
(Liberte whirlpool appears at night, and walking into it leads to a place called "???")
(Gate)
It's shut tight.
("Developer's Room")
(If the player gets a Game Over, or uses a Dragon Wing to go to northern part of Liberte at night, and then tries to head south on foot)
- The high tide blocks your way!
Tamura Jin: Deciding on the design and style of the images presented many challenges, but we hope you enjoy them as you play!
Kamiya: Brrrrrrng! Bam-bam! We put together some great sound effects. Don't forget to pick up the soundtrack!
Woman in right side of town: There are seven hidden crowns that aren't part of the main story. Two can be found in the minigames!
Yoshida Akihiko: The gull you can see down by the docks is as cute as all get out. I nicknamed him Ponpo…
Official outside museum: The more you accrue element effects, the more likely you will be to neutralize element damage.
(Apollo's house at night)
Kogyoku Izuki: How do you like the characters? Nothing would please me more if you found my little one to be the cutest!
Naoi: Remember that QA stands for Quality Assurance, not Questions and Answers!
(North side inn at night)
Yabuta: Thanks for playing! Take the game at your own pace, and see if you can reach the very end.
Tokita Takashi: Liberte is also home to all the artists who created this game. Let's create a game together! Thanks for exploring so far into the game!
(Residence in southeastern side of town at night)
TakayaNagi: Having fun? Getting into the game? Don't get too addicted, or you'll be like me and never leave your room!
(Liberte Art Museum at night)
Asano P: This is the secret game development room. Nice find!
(Note: The only way to leave the Developer's Room is by sleeping at the inn or at Aire and Jusqua's abode)
(Jusqua and Aire leave town through the south side of Liberte Port)
(Pirate Hideout)
(If the party has not heard that "freedom" is the pirates' motto)
Pirate: Stop right there, me maties. No visitors, by order of Cap'n Drake.
(If the party has heard that "freedom" is the pirates' motto)
Pirate: Avast, me hearties! Are you noobs to our gang? Then what be the password?
- →Love
- →Freedom
- →Courage
(Love/Courage)
Pirate: You be spying scum from Liberte! No spies allowed, by order of Cap'n Drake himself!
(Freedom)
Pirate: Go on, then. You be free to come and go as you please.
(Pirate Hideout B1)
Pirate: Yo-ho-ho! You wanna talk to the cap'n? You'd best give up or you'll be walkin' the plank!
(Pirate Hideout B2 Left Room)
Pirate: Aye, we be the pirates that love freedom! If you're lookin' for the cap'n, he'll be farther along inside.
(Pirate Hideout B2 Right Room)
Pirate: Ahoy, lubbers! Where are the kidnapped folks, you ask? I've no idea!
(Pirate Hideout B1 Right Room)
Pirate: Ahoy there! Who might you be? Newbies to the crew?
(Pirate Hideout B2)
Pirate guarding the left treasure chest: No one's allowed beyond this point. Not without a fight, that is!
(He transforms into a Lizardman)
Pirate guarding the right treasure chest: Oi! You're not part of the Cap'n Drake crew!
(He transforms into a Lizardman)
(Pirate Hideout B3)
Drake: Ye did well to make it all this way…but ye're goin' to regret ye ever did! …For I not be the Captain Drake ye think I am!
(Drake transforms into a Trollud, whom Jusqua and Aire defeat)
(Pirate Hideout B4)
(Jusqua and Aire find the precious vase, hostages, and the real Captain Drake)
Pablo: Was that you making all that noise?
Aire: We came here to save you!
Jusqua: Well, SHE did. I'm just along for the ride.
Pablo: Thank you! They were forcing me to make more works of art, but I was sick with worry about Apollo. *sigh* I just can't survive without my boy and a view of the Sea of Liberte.
Muse: What about Apollo? Is he safe!?
Aire: He's fine. He's looking forward to seeing you back home again.
Muse: *sigh* That's a weight off my mind.
Drake: A fake me did that? …I'm mighty sorry, maties . I caused ye much trouble.
(Jusqua and Aire inspect the vase)
Aire: Eek! I-It's a…BUG!
Jusqua: What are you blubbering about?
Aire: B-but look at it!
Jusqua: Look at what? It's just a vase…
Aire: Eh? But can't you see the little flying creature?
???: No, he can't. Only you can see me. You are special—you were the one who saved me! I am in your debt, and the Arbor folk never forget a debt.
Lilibelle: My name is Lilibelle. What is yours?
Aire: Er, I'm Aire.
Lilibelle: It's a pleasure, Aire!
Jusqua: You really need to stop talking to yourself like that. People might get the wrong idea…
- Lilibelle joins the party!
Drake: I've wronged ye, my artist friend. I hope ye can forgive me.
Pirate: Cap'n! Are you all right?
Drake: Of course I am, ye lily-livered fool! Now take this artist back to his home in Liberte, and be quick about it.
Pablo: I will bid you farewell for now. I don't know if I can ever repay you, but please visit us when you return to Liberte.
(Liberte Port)
Official near the inn: Thank you, traveler from Horne! You have defended our freedom and protected our artistic legacy!
Boy: Pablo is back safe and sound. The pirates have turned over a new leaf and are helping out here in town.
Pirate: There be some fine treasure hidden in the bottom of that whirlpool, mark me words!
Pirate: If you want to go adventurin' in the whirlpool, you best take some Echo Herbs, me matey. (Note: This NPC is also stationed with the same dialogue next to the whirlpool at night)
Official: Thank you, young traveler from Horne! It appears Drake really is the kind of man people said he was. I hope you'll stay in Liberte and help us make the oceans safe for everyone!
Jusqua: What are you mumbling to yourself about?
Aire: I guess no one can see Lilibelle but me.
Drake: Ach, the responsibility be all mine. My crew was innocent of all wrongdoin'. Fire be ye friend if ye find yerself fighting water-element beasties.
Woman in a boat: Splendid! Tourists from foreign land feel safe enough to visit our fair town again, thanks to you!
(Liberte Town)
Boy: I knew it. I knew the pirates weren't so bad.
Pirate: Stay clear of that thar whirlpool, me Dad always said. A curse hangs heavy on it.
Museum guard: All the artworks are back in their proper place. Thank you!
(Inn)
Man: You know the whirlpool that appears only at night? Well, some say there's great treasure hidden within.
(Liberte Art Museum)
(All glassworks are put back on display)
Woman: Liberte is again as beautiful and peaceful as it used to be, thanks to you!
Pirate: We be here on volunteer clean-up duty, by way of makin' it up to the townsfolk.
Official: Thank you, traveler from Horne! But first Horne, then Liberte… What is happening to the world?
(Throne room)
Official next to the king: Thank you, traveler from Horne! May I remind you that you cannot cross from port to island at night?
King Liberte: Thanks to you, the unpleasantness with the pirates is settled. I was sleepless with worry over the whole affair!
(Apollo's house)
Apollo: Thanks so much for helping us! Here, I made this for you. It's not so good, but I hope you like it anyway.
- You received Apollo's Talisman!
Pablo: Thanks to you, we've got our quiet, peaceful lives back. You're going to be the inspiration for my next work of art.
Muse: Pablo is safe, and that's all that matters. A simple "thanks" is not enough, but thank you anyway! (Jusqua and Aire's abode)
Jusqua: Sheesh, what an adventure this is turning out to be.
Aire: Yes, but look at what we found. Isn't the room so much more beautiful now?
Jusqua: Don't tell me you want to go hunting for more treasure!
Aire: Why not? We've got a lot to do before this place looks as grand as my room back in Horne!
Jusqua: Ah, whatever. I need to sleep.
(Next morning)
Sleeping Aire: *sigh* Yes, and a nice, soft, plump pillow.... And a comfy new armchair…
Lilibelle: Aire…?
Aire: *yawn* Oh, morning, Lilibelle.
Lilibelle: Are you all right? You were tossing and turning all night.
Aire: I just can't relax in this dingy little room. I'm a princess, you know. I'm used to luxury. I don't suppose you know where I could find some nicer things for the room?
Lilibelle: Well, er… I heard there's secret treasure hidden in the bottom of the whirlpool. Legend says it was reserved for the eyes of artisans who crafted the finest Liberte glasswork…
Aire: Great treasure!? Golly!
Lilibelle: Yes, but I wouldn't try finding it if I were you.
Aire: Why not? Let's go!
Jusqua: *yawn* Are you talking to yourself again?
Aire: Oh, come on, lazybones, get out of bed. We're going treasure hunting!
Jusqua: Do you realize how much time you spend mumbling to yourself?
Aire: The Liberte treasure will all be mine!
(??? 1F)
(Inside the whirlpool, the gate that was previously closed is now open and Jusqua, Aire, and Lilibelle venture deeper inside)
- It's a big lever of some kind. Do you want to pull it?
- →Sure
- →Nope
(Sure)
- Somewhere, a pair of heavy doors swung open.
(??? 2F)
- It's a big lever of some kind. Do you want to pull it?
- →Sure
- →Nope
(Sure)
- The ground shakes, and is still again.
(??? 3F)
Jusqua: I've got a bad feeling about this. Let's get outta here.
Lilibelle: Yes, Aire, he's right. We should leave.
Aire: No way, not when we've come so far. That treasure is so close I can almost taste it!
(A monster appears)
Greed…shall…be…PUNISHED!
(Jusqua and Aire defeat the Brainshark)
Aire: Wh-what was THAT!?
Jusqua: Argh, I've had enough of this!
Aire: Enough of what?
Jusqua: You! This partnership is over, princess… From now on, all my adventures are going to be strictly solo! I may be a citizen of Horne, but I'm not your personal servant.
Aire: Hmph. Suit yourself. Come on, Lilibelle. It's just you and me now!
Lilibelle: But I…I'm scared…
Aire: Oh, whatEVER! I'll get the treasure myself!
Jusqua: I'm outta here…
(He walks away)
Lilibelle: …
(Aire opens the treasure, which releases black smoke)
Aire: Uh-oh…
(The room begins to shake as a giant geyser ejects into the atmosphere)
Aire: EEEK!
(Aire transforms into a cat and falls into Liberte Town from the jet of water)
Aire: (What on earth…?) (A tail?) (I don't understand! What's going on? Someone? Anyone?)
Seagull in north side of town: Are you hungry? Want a fish? …No, of course it's not grilled. What kind of a cat are you?
Gray cat: Are you new around here, meow? Are you sure you're really a cat?
Faithful Fox: Hey-ho, glad we can finally have a chat! I'm the Adventurer's faithful fox companion. Side by side we travel the world. I can't save your game, but I might be able to tell you the latest news and rumors I've heard.
Faithful Fox: Looks like you've been turned into a cat. I think Arbor holds the key to lifting the curse.
Seagull to the east side of town: Arbor? Oh, no, far too dangerous. The western caves, the Guera desert…and countless monsters in between!
Man near the lighthouse: In Liberte, even the animals look like works of art.
Museum guard: Sorry, little one. I'd love to play, but I'm on duty.
Woman outside Apollo's house: Ah, what a cute little cat.
Pirate: Aye, you've got a fine coat of fur on you. You eat more than just raw fish, I reckon!
Boy: Hm? What do you want? …Oh, I know! You're hungry, right?
Artist near the inn: Now, you're a fine specimen of a cat. But where did you come from?
(Apollo's house)
Pablo:Ah, this cat is perfect! I have a wonderful idea for my next piece!
Muse: You know, I always wanted to have a pet…
(Residence next to the Adventurer)
Grey cat: Are you new around here, meow? There's no shortage of fish in this town.
(Liberte Art Museum)
Woman: Aw, how CUTE! Whose cat are you?
Official: Far, far away from here lies Arbor, land of fairies.
Pirate: Out of the way, you bloomin' animal. I be cleanin' here!
Artist: Shoo, shoo! You're going to distract me from my work.
(Throne room)
Official next to the king: Animals aren't allowed in the museum. They might break the exhibits.
King Liberte: Hoho, how cute!
(Jusqua and Aire's abode)
Apollo: Hello? Where did you come from? (to the cat) Say, mister. Where did your nice lady friend go? (to Jusqua)
Jusqua: Who cares? All she ever thinks about is herself anyway. I decided to split from her and go solo. She goes her way, I go mine…
Apollo: …
Jusqua: A stray cat? Well, I've got no food. Go on, shoo!
Aire: Lilibelle!
Lilibelle: Aire? Is that you?
Aire: You can understand me?
Lilibelle: Of course. We Arbor fairies can talk to animals. But it looks like someone has put a hex on you.
Aire: Will I ever be human again?
Lilibelle: I don't know. But maybe if you talked to the queen of Arbor…
Aire: Really? She can help? Lilibelle, you HAVE to take me there, right now!
Lilibelle: Okay. But what about Jusqua?
Aire: Oh, him? We're not traveling together any more, actually. He made it quite clear I wasn't welcome. So I said fine and now I'm going solo.
Lilibelle: Well, if you're sure. Here, let me give you this. It's a Fairy Map. It will show you how to get to Arbor. First you have to pass through the western mountains into the desert.
- Lilibelle joins the party!
- You obtain the Fairy Map!
(Liberte Port)
Seagull near a boat: The route to Arbor goes through woods in the west. Very dangerous place, though. Very dangerous.
Seagull near the town exit: You wanna go to Arbor? Personally, I'd fly, but I guess you're stuck with cutting through the woods to the west.
(Shop)
Shopkeeper (clothes): Why, hello there! I see word of our new collection has even reached the animal kingdom.
Shopkeeper (items): Animal customers? Fine by me. A gil's a gil, whether from hand or paw.
(Storage shop)
Storekeeper: Aw, are you running errands for your master? How cute!
(Aire leaves Liberte as a cat, and heads to the cave to the west)
Animal Burrow & Guera & Fairy Path[]
Ogre Bear: *sniff sniff* Do I smell…a human?
Lilibelle: Oh, no no no. It's just a cat. See?
Ogre Bear: Hmmm. It looks like a cat, but it stinks like a human! No humans allowed in MY lair!
(The Ogre Bear defeats Aire)
Lilibelle: Aire? Are you okay?
Aire: Unnngh…
(Lilibelle drives the bear away with a fire spell)
Lilibelle: Aire, you mustn't die now! I'll give you my life so that you can go on!
Aire: N…nnnh… W-what happened? Lilibelle? LILIBELLE!?
Lilibelle: Aire… You'll…you'll be all right…now.
Aire: But why…? Why did you do this for me?
Lilibelle: The Arbor folk…never forget a debt. Remember, you saved me once…and now I have saved you.
Aire: Lilibelle!
Lilibelle: Don't cry… Here, take my wings. They will help you…in your journey.
- You received Lilibelle's Wings!
(Lilibelle disappears)
Aire: Lilibeeeeeelle!!! Huh? NOW what's happening!?
(The crystal appears before Aire)
- O, child of hope!
- Beauty beyond reckoning fills this wondrous world.
- Yet that same beauty warps souls and incites war.
- Remember now, there is no beauty greater than life itself.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- Now, go forth with courage, Hero of Light, go forth!
(Guera)
(Aire makes her way to Guera while in cat form where she finds Brandt)
- Brandt joins the party!
- And so did Aire the cat reunite with Brandt in the magical kingdom of Guera.
Brandt: Aw, you're cute. Do you want to come along on my adventure?
Shopkeeper: Oh, I don't have any pet food. (if Aire is in lead)
Pig: A little secret from me to you… Crowns can be enhanced three times.
Pig: A little secret from me to you… The effects of the Black Mage's Spell Focus and Magic Mojo accrue together.
Weapon seller: What a fine animal you are! Are you here to shop? (if Aire is in lead)
Spell seller: … (if Aire is in lead)
Man in the north side of town: Aw, you're all covered in sand.
Cat in the northwestern corner: A little secret from meow to you… Monsters will target the ally with the mightiest attacks and most powerful abilities.
Faithful Fox: The caves to the north of the desert lead through the mountains to Arbor.
(Storage shop)
Storekeeper: We're not a kennel, you know. (if Aire is in lead)
Man: I don't suppose you appreciate urns quite the way I do. (if Aire is in lead)
(Magic shop)
Spell seller: We have no spells for cats. (if Aire is in lead)
(Brandt and Aire leave Guera to the cave in the north)
(Fairy Path)
Gueran soldier: Supposedly, these caves lead to Arbor, but I've never been able to find a way through. (if Brandt is in lead)
Gueran soldier: … (if Aire is in lead)
(Brandt and cat Aire make their way through the Fairy Path to Arbor)
Brandt: Whoa! Wh-what's happening? I…can't…move…
(Brandt is turned into a plant)
Jusqua in Liberte[]
- Meanwhile, in the town of Liberte…
- Jusqua was starting to worry about Aire, who still hadn't returned home.
(A gray cat approaches Jusqua)
Jusqua: Yeowch! I only know one person as strong-willed as this cat—Aire! You must have been hit with the curse that protects the treasure. Oh well. Serves you right.
Jusqua: Yep. Serves you right…I guess.
Jusqua: Look, I was never supposed to be your bodyguard in the first place. Stop following me around!
Jusqua: *sigh* All right, all right! I guess we're going to have to figure out how to lift that curse.
- The cat (is it Aire?) joins the party!
(Liberte Town)
Boy: Aire? No, sorry. I don't know where she is.
Pirate: A little blond girl? Sorry, matey, I've seen neither hide nor hair.
Woman outside the lighthouse: They say you have to travel the world first if you want to be a truly great artist.
Museum guard: Urbeth lies to the north, beyond the Hunting Caves. It's a dangerous journey, so be ready to run!
Artist near the inn: If you travel through the Hunting Caves to the north, you'll eventually reach Urbeth.
(Apollo's house)
Apollo: Huh? Where's Aire today?
(Liberte Art Museum)
Artist: My one and only goal is to become as skilled an artist as the great Pablo!
Woman: Beyond the Hunting Caves to the north lies the great trading town of Urbeth.
(Throne room)
Official: May I remind you that you cannot cross from port to island at night?
King Liberte: Is something troubling you?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
King Liberte: What? You went into the whirlpool? Tsk, tsk. Legend says that forbidden treasure lies in those depths…protected by a curse that turns would-be-plunderers into animals. Your friend may no longer be human.
King Liberte: Ah, have you found Lady Aire?
- →Yep
- →Nope
(Yep)
Jusqua: Yeah. I think you were right. She was cursed and turned into a cat.
King Liberte: I see. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do for her in Liberte. There is a town in the north called Urbeth. People gather there from all over the world. Perhaps someone there can help you? It might be worth the trip.
(Liberte Port)
Drake: Me name be Cap'n Drake, and if ye ever need help on the high seas, just call and I'll come sailin' to yer aid! …Ach. 'Cept with the waves so high and the seas so stormy, we can't even leave port…
(Item shop)
Woman: No one who enters the whirlpool is ever seen again, so watch your step! (nighttime)
(Jusqua leaves Liberte with the cat)
Urbeth[]
(Jusqua and the cat pass through the Hunting Caves and head for Urbeth)
(Town of Urbeth)
(Everyone wears black and there are numerous voodoo dolls hanged outside buildings and placed inside residences)
Woman near the town entrance: This is Urbeth, the city of merchants. We don't have a king, but the four Merchant Lords manage everything around here.
Man near the town entrance: You can find every kind of shop in the world here. Even I'm thinking of hanging out my shingle!
Man outside the storage shop: I really want a Bomb Fragment, but there's no way I can steal one from a monster without being a Bandit.
Man near the town square: Nice people get chewed up and spat out in Urbeth! Take, for example, that poor wretch who's always moping around the town square.
Yunita: Jusqua? Is that you? I suppose you don't want me around, do you? I'll just slow you down, won't I?
Jusqua: (Yeah. Or whine me to death.)
Beggar girl outside the weapon shop: Please, young traveler. Have some pity and spare me a bit of change!
Girl near the bridge: You know that Sorcerer's place that's all the rage? Well, he closes up shop at night.
Beggar boy near to the sorcerer's house: You want a puppet to keep away bad spirits? The Sorcerer down the alley makes them, but I'd rather have food myself.
Man down the dock: You know Mr. Thauzand in that weapon shop? Well, he's the man who keeps all the Merchant Lords in line.
Man near the inn: Shocking, isn't it? The size of our tower? They started building it long ago to offer up prayers to the gods, but it's never been finished. It's hard to believe now, but Urbeth was once a city of faith, where men treasured their souls more than their gold.
(Item shop)
Shopkeeper: Yes, do you need something?
(Storage shop)
Storekeeper: Would you like to deposit some of your possessions?
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: I'm Bylion, one of the four Merchant Lords. Be sure to treat yourself to some of my wares.
Man: If you're looking for items, they sell those downstairs. I'm just doing inventory now.
Saleswoman: Welcome to our store!
(Pub)
Pubkeeper: Are you visiting here? You'd best take care. Act a fool in these parts and you'll end up without even the clothes on your backs! (daytime)
Pubkeeper: Now what might you be up to at this hour? (nighttime)
(Note: The pub only has patrons at nighttime)
Man: Urbeth became such a thriving market city all because of a certain incident…
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Man next to the counter: If you're looking for our boss, Thauzand, he's up on the second floor. He controls everything around here, you know.
Sales clerk: We have a fine selection of weapons. Please purchase one for yourself.
Beggar boy: Go on, buy yerself something nice, would ye? I'd suggest a water-element weapon meself…
Man seated: The weapons here are the best in the world. Of course, they aren't cheap either.
Thauzand: I'm Thauzand, one of the four Merchant Lords. Let me know if you have any trouble in town and I'll be there at the drop of a dime!
(Mylion's armor shop)
Man: You know what? Hellhounds carry the Bomb Fragments we use for making our armor.
Mylion: I am Mylion, one of the four Merchant Lords. I mostly deal in armor and shields, but please have a look around.
Saleswoman: Welcome! If you're going to be traveling in these parts, I'd have to recommend a Flame Shield.
(Magic shop)
Shopkeeper: Yes, do you need something?
Woman: Magic does come in handy, but not nearly as much as money!
Man: I really want a Bomb Fragment, but there's no way I can steal one from a monster without being a Bandit.
(Upgrade shop)
Upgrader: If you're fixing to upgrade your equipment, then I'm your man. A few secret gems and I'll have you on the road in no time.
- →Upgrade
- →Back
(Upgrade)
What will it be? Whose equipment do you wan to upgrade?
Select the equipment you wish to upgrade.
- Weapon Upgraded!
(Back)
Finished?
Man: The last time I went to the lake in the southwest, I was practically mauled by a pack of Hellhounds!
(Inn)
Man: I wonder if you can find ALL the treasures I've hidden in this town. (Note: Most treasure-hiders have the same dialogue)
Innkeeper: Welcome, welcome! A night here costs 50 gil. Would you like to stay?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: Rest easy!
(No)
Innkeeper: Please come again any time!
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Man: This is Lady Trylion's boutique. We cater exclusively to only the finest clientele.
Trylion: I am Trylion, one of the four Merchant Lords. You'll surely find something to suit you here in my accessory shop.
Saleswoman: Thank you for coming to our shop. Please take your time!
(Residence 1)
Woman: The puppets made by the Sorcerer are really popular in Urbeth these days.
Beggar woman: Those of us without money are treated like dirt in this city.
Hooded woman: The city of Urbeth is split into four districts selling weapons, armor, items, and accessories. The leading merchants of each district more or less rule the city, so we call them the Merchant Lords. Which reminds me, have you been to Trylion's accessory shop. Oh, I can't wait for her newest collection…
Man: What do you think you're doing, just barging into someone's home?
(Residence 2)
Man: Money is everything in this town. If you don't know what's what, you'll end up penniless and on the streets.
Woman: I've never seen you around here before. You'd better be careful or this town will chew you up and spit you out.
(Sorcerer's house)
Sorcerer: Hehehe. Welcome, stranger. Is there anything I can do for you?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Sorcerer: A cursed cat, is it? Let me have a look at her… Yes, that's a curse all right. I can fix it, but it'll cost you. Are you willing to pay? Well, well. If you're THAT desperate, I think 10,000 gil should cover it. Hehehe. I'll see you again—when you have the money.
Sorcerer: Hehehe… So, do you have it? Do you have the 10,000 gil?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Sorcerer: What are you playing at? You don't have 10,000 gil!
(No)
Sorcerer: You better go find some money then, hadn't you?
(Town square)
Jusqua: Yunita! How long are you going to stand there moping?
Yunita: I'm not strong enough. I'll just slow you down…
Jusqua: No you won't. Come on, you want to help save Aire, don't you?
Yunita: Th-the princess? Where is she?
Jusqua: Er, well… (Better keep my mouth shut. I don't want her thinking it was MY fault…)
Yunita: …Never mind. If you're going to help the princess, then I'm coming, too!
- Yunita joins the party!
Yunita: I tried to reach Arbor, but I couldn't get through the caves. So I came here to look for more clues… I've been cheated and conned by many people in Urbeth I can't stand to think about it any more!
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Trylion: Hello, child. What do you want? Money, I suppose?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Trylion: Well, I DO have a job for you. Here, take these three rings and sell them for me. Who should you sell them to? Why, that's YOUR job to find out!
Trylion: It appears you cannot carry more. Return when you have lightened your load.
- You obtained three of Trylion's Rings!
(Town of Urbeth)
Man at the dock: What, a new ring from Trylion? What a coincidence! I was just thinking I could use more jewelry… You say it's expensive? Oh, please, it's just pocket change for someone like me!
- Will you sell him one of Trylion's rings?
- →Okay
- →No way
(Okay)
- You sold one of Trylion's rings!
Man at the dock: Hmm, it's not a bad ring. I suppose it will do for now.
Man near the inn: A new ring from Trylion's store? Why, that's just the thing my daughter wanted! Would you let me buy it for her?
- Will you sell him one of Trylion's rings?
- →Sure!
- →Nope.
(Sure!)
- You sold one of Trylion's rings!
Man near the inn: My daughter's going to love it! Thank you!
(Residence 1)
Hooded woman: That ring is part of Trylion's new collection? Well, then there's no way I can refuse—especially not a cute salesperson like yourself!
- Will you sell her one of Trylion's rings?
- →Sell it
- →Keep it
(Okay)
- You've sold one of Trylion's rings!
Hooded woman: What a wonderful ring. Oh, I just adore it! Let me know the next time you have anything new.
Man: You want to work? Then I suppose you ought to go talk to Lord Thauzand at the weapon shop.
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Trylion: Hello, Jusqua. Did you find customers for all the rings?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Trylion: Really? You sold all three of the rings? Good show! Then I must pay you, mustn't I? Here you are…
- You obtained 2500 gil!
Trylion: Why don't you work for us full-time? We could do with a person of your talents.
- →Okay
- →No
(No)
Trylion: Hehe. Just as well. I don't fancy having to babysit you all the time.
(Mylion's armor shop)
Mylion: Welcome. Are you here to buy something? The front counter is that-a-way.
- →Yes
- →No
(No)
Mylion: Then you're looking for a job, perhaps?
- →Yeah!
- →No
(Yeah!)
Mylion: Hm. I do need people to collect materials for me. At the moment, we're very short on Bomb Fragments, the kind that certain local monsters carry. I'll give you a very good price for any you can bring me.
Mylion: I believe you can get Bomb Fragments from the local monsters. I'll be counting on you.
Mylion: Oh, have you brought me a Bomb Fragment? May I have it then?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- You gave away the Bomb Fragment!
Mylion: Excellent, excellent! Thanks to you, we have all the supplies we need. Here's your money. Don't spend it all at once!
- You obtained 2500 gil!
Mylion: I wish I could give you more work, but I think we have everything covered now. But you're welcome to buy something!
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: Why, hello! I bet you're here to do some shopping, aren't you?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Bylion: Well, take your time and look around. We've got some great deals!
(No)
Bylion: Ah, I get it. If you're not here to spend, you must be here to earn! Am I right? …Come to think of it, I just might have a job for you. You see, there's a Chimera lurking around in the Hunting Caves. It's playing havoc with our supply chain. Do you fancy going to the Hunting Caves and getting rid of it?
- →Sure
- →No
(Sure)
Bylion: Great. The sooner you finish the job, the better!
Bylion: Well, did you do it? Is the Chimera slain?
- →Yep
- →No
(No)
Bylion: You should hurry up then. Remember, go to the Hunting Caves in the south and get rid of the Chimera!
(Yep)
Bylion: Brilliant. I knew I could count on you! Here's your reward then. Make sure you buy something nice with it!
- You obtained 2500 gil!
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Thauzand: Hello. Here for some shopping, are we?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Thauzand: In that case, the shop's downstairs.
(No)
Jusqua: No, I need money, fast! Can you give me a job?
Thauzand: Guess you're new around here. In this town, folk who don't have money don't last very long.
Jusqua: Well, er…why don't you lend me counter space? Then I can sell some of my stuff.
Thauzand: You want to open your own shop? Hahaha! I like your style. You've got chutzpah, that's for sure. All right, I'll lend you some space at the downstairs counter. Talk to the clerk and let's see how you do at running a store!
Man next to the counter: If you're ready to open up shop, just say the word and I'll lend you some counter space. Do you want to use the counter?
- →Yes!
- →Not now
(Yes!)
Man next to the counter: If you recommend a certain item, it'll sell even faster, so it's a good idea to recommend whatever you REALLY want to sell.
Man next to the counter: Items that are in fashion will always sell like hotcakes, even if they're overpriced.
Man next to the counter: You know, you don't really lose anything by just marking items at their original prices.
Man next to the counter: If you can sell the right combination of items as a set, people will buy a bunch of stuff at once.
Man next to the counter: If you really want to get a high score, you should sell expensive items at a low price. But you'll lose money doing that!
- SELECT YOUR MERCHANDISE!
- First, select the items you want to sell from the supplies you have on deposit at the local storage shop.
- These days, people are crazy for [type of item]…
- If you don't have any sellable items in storage, you won't be able to play.
- Select the items to sell!
Jusqua/Brandt: Sure would be nice if we could sell everything… (Brandt can play the shopkeeper game later)
Yunita: Wouldn't it be great if we could sell everything?
- Set prices for your items!
Player character: It's hard to sell an item that's priced way over normal market price.
Player character: We should hurry up and open up shop!
Player character: I wonder what kind of items people are looking to buy in Urbeth these days.
Player character: I wonder what will sell today.
- Store's Open!
- Closing Time!
- Today's Sales
- Items Sold #
- Items Unsold #
- Profits #G
(If the player sold nothing)
Aw, we didn't sell a single thing!
(If the player did not sell everything)
- Next time, we should try to sell everything!
(If the player did sell everything)
Jusqua/Brandt: Yahoo! We sold every item! (Brandt can play the shopkeeper game later)
Yunita: Yippee! We sold every item!
- Folk in Urbeth are crazy for swords…
- Seems like everyone wants to have a shield these days…
- Axes are booming in Urbeth…
- People in Urbeth like to be seen carrying lots of books…
- Everyone in Urbeth seems to be into playing instruments…
- Right now, people in Urbeth love collecting adventuring supplies.
- Urbeth is mad for armor right now!
- A nice bow is the must-have fashion statement in Urbeth these days.
- Folk in Urbeth HAVE to have the latest accessories…
(If the party make 20,000G profit)
Man by the counter: Wow, you're amazing!
(The crystal appears before the Heroes of Light)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- How mighty you have grown.
- Long, so long have we waited for this blessed day to come.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Seamstress!
(After running a successful shop)
Thauzand: In for a penny, in for a pound!
(Sorcerer's house)
Sorcerer: Hehehe… So, do you have it? Do you have the 10,000 gil?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- You paid 10,000 gil!
Sorcerer: Now I shall lift the curse. Give me the cat.
Jusqua: Hang in there. Not much longer now…
Yunita: Don't worry. Not much longer now…
- The cat (is it Aire?) leaves the party.
Sorcerer: It will take me all night to dispel the curse. Go to the inn and sleep. You can come back tomorrow for your friend.
(Jusqua and Yunita go rest at the inn)
NOOO! May the gods have mercy on us! The puppets the Sorcerer have us are turning into…MONSTERS!
Innkeeper: There seem to be monsters prowling streets, but we're staying open, no matter what!
Man: This is awful! The puppets have all turned into monsters and they're attacking the town!
(Town of Urbeth)
Man near the inn: The puppets are turning into monsters? Oh, woe is us! Surely this will spell the end of Urbeth!
Beggar woman near the alley to the Sorcerer's house: If you're looking for that Sorcerer, he's run off. Seems like he took a boat and headed north.
Girl outside accessory boutique: Waaah! Waaah! The puppet Daddy bought for me became a big ugly monster!
Man near town entrance: GYAAAUGH! Monsters, monsters, the town's full of them—here, there, and everywhere!
Man outside the storage shop: Nnngh…mon…sters…in…the…streets…
Beggar woman at the town square: Argh! The puppet I got from the Sorcerer…!
Jusqua: Wasn't the Sorcerer handing out those puppets to the townspeople, as wards against evil?
Yunita: There are monsters everywhere!
(Residence 1)
Girl: The Sorcerer's puppets have turned into monsters!
(Jusqua and Yunita defeat the monsters outside Trylion's accessory boutique)
Trylion: What on earth…? What was all that racket just now?
Saleswoman: What in blazes was that!?
(Jusqua and Yunita defeat the monsters outside Mylion's armor shop)
Saleswoman: What a terrible fright that was! Who would have thought the Sorcerer's puppets could turn into monsters?
(Jusqua and Yunita defeat the monsters outside Bylion's item shop)
Saleswoman: Y-you saved us! Thank you so much!
Bylion: Is this what that wicked Sorcerer calls protection?
(Jusqua and Aire defeat the Demon outside Thauzand's weapon shop)
Jusqua: *pant pant* Man, that was a handful!
Yunita: But where did those monsters come from?
Jusqua: …!
Yunita: Eek!
(A crystal appears before Jusqua and Yunita)
- O, children of hope!
- The darkness encroaches even the souls of men.
- Those who succumb to desire lose all faith.
- Shine the light on their hearts and drive the darkness away!
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crowns of the Merchant and Salve-maker!
- Go forth, Heroes of Light, your adventure continues!
Jusqua: Is Thauzand all right!?
Yunita: What on earth was that? Perhaps Thauzand can tell us what's going on.
(Weapon shop)
Sales clerk: You are just too awesome! Have you thought about trying your hand in an arena?
Thauzand: What a calamity! You worked so hard to make that money, and this is the reward you get. But you mustn't let that Sorcerer get away with his ill-gotten gains! Listen, if you want to follow the Sorcerer, I can help. Go to the inn and sleep. Tomorrow I will have a ship ready for you, so you can sail after the scoundrel.
(Outside the inn)
(If the player never recruited Yunita at the Urbeth town square)
Jusqua: What are you doing here? (The same recruitment dialogue plays)
(Jusqua and Yunita stay at the inn, but Jusqua gets up while Yunita is still asleep)
Jusqua: (It's my fault that Aire was turned into a cat. And on top of everything, now she's been kidnapped, too!) (I'm so sorry, Yunita…) (But as much as I want to, I can't tell you the truth.) (I'm going to have to find that Sorcerer and bring back Aire myself!)
- Yunita is left behind.
(Weapon shop)
Thauzand: Time to teach that Sorcerer a lesson! I've prepared a boat for you outside the city. Remember, it can only land on beaches. I'm sure the other Merchant Lords will want to thank you, too. Good luck, my friend!
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: I still say you should save up some more gil before setting out, but…
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Trylion: If you ever miss me, just pop by for a visit.
(Mylion's armor shop)
Mylion: If you're hoping to get to Invidia, you had better take some protective goods from my shop.
(Tower to the Sky)
Apothecary: This area is off limits.
(Jusqua finds the boat outside Urbeth and sets sail)
- And so Jusqua set out alone to Invidia to rescue Aire from her fate…
- Meanwhile, the real Aire, still in cat form, is in Arbor.
Arbor & Namingway[]
- She paws at Brandt, but her traveling companion has been turned into some kind of plant!
Aire: Brandt! Brandt! He looks just like a tree or bush or something… What should I do? Maybe the people of Arbor will know how to fix him.
Brandt: …
Ferret: Why, hello there! Is this your first time to Arbor? And that's your master? Oh dear, I AM sorry!
Elf woman: One treasure is at the base of a long-stemmed mushroom. Now don't tell any of your animal friends, hehe!
Faithful Fox: It must feel odd, being turned into a plant. I suggest you ask around among the locals about a cure.
Elf woman at the tree's entrance: If humans try to enter our land of Arbor, they are turned into living plants. Animals can pass unharmed, though.
(The Great Tree of Arbor)
Innkeeper: Welcome to our inn. A bed costs 100 gil. Will you be staying?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: May you rest well in this safe haven.
(No)
Innkeeper: Come again, whenever the winds blow you this way…
Fairy near the inn: Your friend has been turned into a plant? Well, perhaps you could transform them into an animal first? Then you'd be halfway to a fix…
Item shop clerk: Mightn't you be needing some items before you head out again?
Ferret near the item shop: I imagine you were surprised to find a whole town here inside the Great Tree of Arbor!
Weapon seller: A weapon from Arbor would make a fine souvenir of your visit.
Storekeeper: Hello, friend. I'm here to help!
Fairy at the entrance to the root system: Beyond this point you will find yourself among the roots of the Great Tree. It is a strange place, full of old magic.
(Next room)
Wood nymph: Fire is forbidden in these woods, yet there are many monsters that are vulnerable to flames.
Wood nymph near the multiplayer shop: Arbaroc is the guardian spirit of Arbor. If this Great Tree is not kept safe, all magic will disappear from the world.
Ferret near the multiplayer shop: A traveling sage once came digging around in the roots of the Great Tree, seeking the legendary White Magic.
Fairy behind the multiplayer shop: Arbor's guardian, Arbaroc, has been behaving most oddly. He is the white eagle you may have seen flying around the Great Tree.
(Throne room)
Right wood warder: You are almost in the presence of the queen. Please mind your manners before her!
Queen Arbor: You wish me to save a human who has been turned into a plant? This land is forbidden to humans. I cannot help you.
Left wood warder: You can climb to the top of the Great Tree if you go this way. But Arbaroc's nest lies there—do not enter lightly!
(Right arboretum)
Elf woman: There is a green barrier set around Arbor to keep humans from stealing in and taking our seedlings.
Ferret: You can indeed reach the highest point of the Great Tree if you continue to climb, but it is terribly dangerous.
Elf woman: This is where we cultivate future Great Trees. What you see before you is a new seedling.
(Trying to touch the seedling)
Elf woman: That seedling is very important and you're not allowed to touch it!
(Left arboretum)
Elf woman near the seedling: This is where we grow the next Great Tree. What you see before you is a seedling of the Great Tree—no, don't touch it!
Fairy: Oh no, you shouldn't be wandering around here!
(Trying to touch the seedling)
Elf woman near the seedling: Don't touch the seedling!
Elf woman: Many dangerous monsters lurk among the branches of the Great Tree. You should especially watch out for those that will seal your magic.
(Great Tree Roots)
(Aire comes across a mouse wearing a blue cape)
???: Mercy me, it's a CAT! Stay away, cat. Don't eat me!
Aire: Eek! It's a big horrible MOUSE! Go away mouse, go on, shoo!
???: …Hm? I must say, it's a rare cat that is afraid of a mouse.
Torte: My name is Torte, madam. Mouse maestro of magic, at your service. Have you also come to the roots of the Great Tree on a quest?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Aire: Er, well, yes, I suppose I have. My friend has been turned into a plant or something.
Torte: I see, I see. Hence, you find yourself in these dark and deadly burrows… Well, you are in the right place. The Animal Staff that lies beyond is a sure cure for the vegetative curse. With it, you can turn your friend into an animal and presto, your problem is solved! I shall help you seek it out…
- Torte joins the party!
(Aire and Torte explore the root system and find the Animal Staff)
- You obtained the Animal Staff!
(The Great Tree)
Torte: I beg of you, do not eat me!
(Aire takes the Animal Staff to the plant-Brandt outside the tree)
Faithful Fox: So, a plant can be turned into an animal? That would be an improvement, right? At least animals can move around.
- Will you use the Animal Staff?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: …!? Wh-wh-whoof…?
(Brandt turns into a dog)
Brandt: What did I just say? What's happened to me? Oooh, a giant mouse.
Torte: Ahem. The name, sir, is Torte. Magic user extraordinaire and resident of fair Arbor.
Aire: At least he can move again. But we can't stay like this forever. We're humans, not animals!
Torte: Then in that case, I suggest you pay visit to our queen. Perhaps I can speak on your behalf…
Faithful Fox: The queen of Arbor will surely know a way to turn transformed animals back to human form.
(The Great Tree)
Torte: You're quite the rambunctious pair, aren't you?
Brandt: Wahaha! Being a dog isn't all bad!
(Throne room)
Queen Arbor: Ah, Torte, welcome back. Tell me, what news do you bring?
Torte: I inspected the roots of the Great Tree, and the tree is indeed growing weak.
Queen Arbor: That is grave news. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, Torte. And who might these be? They are human, unless I am very much mistaken.
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: Wow, you saw right through us!
Torte: Ahem. Apparently, they wish to return to human form. Although I can't imagine why anyone would WANT to be human, they are most insistent. Will Your Majesty be able to help them?
Queen Arbor: Well… Perhaps if they do something for our country first, we can do them a favor in return.
- →Okay!
- →No!
(Okay!)
Aire: Really? We'll do anything. Just tell us!
Queen Arbor: Arbaroc is the guardian spirit of the Great Tree, but he has grown quite mad. An evil demon has somehow taken possession of Arbaroc and is making him run amok. If this continues much longer, the Great Tree will be damaged. Please find Arbaroc and bring him back to his senses!
Queen Arbor: Arbaroc, our guardian spirit, has forgotten his role. If you can bring him back to his senses, I would consider lifting your curse.
(Brandt, Aire, and Torte climb to the top of the tree)
Faithful Fox: Arbaroc is just ahead.
Torte: This is the nest of Arbaroc. Will you enter?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: Come on , let's do it!
(A giant white eagle descends upon the party at the nest)
Arbaroc: CAW, CAW! ST-STAY AWAY FROM MEEE!
Torte: Arbaroc, it's me, Torte! Do you not remember your old friend?
(Brandt, Aire, and Torte defeat Arbaroc in battle and the white eagle disappears)
Torte: Forgive us, mighty Arbaroc. But we had no choice…
(The crystal appears before Brandt and Aire)
- O, children of hope!
- Now hate and fear grip the world.
- Hate breeds fear, and fear, hate. Thus the darkness steals within…
- But those who believe in the Light will never know terror's blight.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crowns of Elementalist and Ranger!
- Go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(The crystal disappears and there is a magic circle on the floor of the empty nest)
Torte: Oh, what have we done? What have we done!?
Brandt: Did we do the right thing?
Aire: Now we can go back to being human, right?
(Throne room)
Queen Arbor: So it was true. Arbaroc was possessed.
Torte: He didn't even recognize me! He took one look at us and attacked. So we…
Queen Arbor: You did what you had to do. Now, travelers, we are in your debt. The animal curse will be lifted.
Torte: Go on, then. And be careful not to step on me when you return to human form!
Aire: Oh, Torte…
(The queen transforms Brandt and Aire back to human form)
Queen Arbor: There. The curse has been lifted. I have also enhanced your Animal Staff so that you change back and forth at will.
- You obtained the Transform Staff!
Queen Arbor: Today, you are our guests. Please, stay in the inn.
- Torte leaves the party.
(Brandt and Aire settle at their lodging)
Aire: Where is Yunita, by the way? Let me guess—she was slowing you down so you dumped her.
Brandt: I didn't dump her! …But it's true she gets in the way sometimes. I figured I'd just check out Arbor on my own and go back for her later.
Aire: Ah-ha! So you DID dump her. That's very selfish of you. She's completely hopeless without anyone to look after her. You know that! Do you think Yunita is still waiting in Guera?
Brandt: Beats me. Maybe she tried to come to Arbor on her own. We met this guy called Krinjh who said Arbor might hold the key to saving Horne. Speaking of lost traveling companions, weren't you with Jusqua?
Aire: Oh, him. …He said he was sick of me and that I should go and do what I like.
Brandt: Haha! That sounds like Jusqua, all right! Still, I wouldn't worry about it. He's like that to everyone. Anyway, let's follow Krinjh's advice and try to figure out a way to lift the curse on Horne.
Aire: Okay! Maybe Queen Arbor can help us one more time?
(Throne room)
Queen Arbor: I would like to help you, but the curse on Horne was created by a witch's contract… I do not have the power to intervene. However, I know someone who does… Rolan, the great hero of Spelvia, might be able to help. If you climb to the very top of the Great Tree, you just might be able to leap across to the floating city.
Queen Arbor: Spelvia draws near. You might be able to reach it if you leap from somewhere high on the Great Tree.
Torte: Arbaroc, possessed? I find that difficult to believe!
(The Great Tree)
Brandt: Thanks for saving me, Aire. And all while you were still a cat!
Brandt: It must be so cool to be a cat. You can jump and climb just about wherever you like! (when talked to in animal form)
(Right arboretum)
Elf woman: If you were to climb the Great Tree from here, you might be able to see Spelvia. But I wouldn't dare try to leap across to it.
(Brandt and Aire climb to the top of the Great Tree)
Brandt: Wow, check it out! That must be the floating city of Spelvia.
Aire: It's coming closer…but we can't jump that far!
Brandt: WE can't—but I bet an animal can!
(Brandt and Aire use the Transformation Staff to transform into dog and cat, respectively)
Brandt: Okay, here we go!
Aire: One…two…
(The two make the leap; Aire makes it but Brandt is left dangling on the edge)
Brandt: Argh!
Aire: Brandt!?
Brandt: D-darn it…I'm s-slipping…
(Brandt in dog form falls off the floating island, and makes his way back to Arbor)
Faithful Fox: Ah, so you couldn't make the leap to Spelvia? Then you must find another way to reach the floating city.
Elf woman: You will need to be well prepared if you are thinking of traveling alone. Do not forget your potions!
Wood warder: When fighting against monsters of the dark, light-element magic and weapons are most effective.
Queen Arbor: So you failed to reach Spelvia? I suppose… Yes, there is always Invidia, the homeland of the hero Rolan. It lies far to the north, but perhaps in that cold place you will find your own path to Spelvia.
(Brandt leaves Arbor)
(House west of Arbor)
Namingway: I am the magic onomatologist, Namingway. I research the names of spells. Shall I help you change the name of your spells?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Namingway: Very well. Which spell name do you wish to change?
Namingway: Would you like to change this spell's name?
(No)
Namingway: Fare thee well.
Ice Caverns & Invidia[]
(Brandt travels to the Ice Caverns to the north, which is lit by candles throughout)
- Take the candle?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- You take the candle, but the candleholder breaks.
- You can only carry one at a time!
- Place the candle?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- The ice melts away, and the path is clear.
- There is a small hole here. An animal could probably wriggle through.
(Brandt uses the Transformation Staff to become a dog)
- Wriggle through the hole?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- Brandt heads to Invidia, hoping to catch up with Aire. Will the two of them be able to reunite in Spelvia?
(Sea route to Invidia)
- Meanwhile, Jusqua is trying to save the cat he believes is Aire. He follows the Sorcerer toward Invidia.
(Jusqua embarks on a northern beach and passes through the Ice Caverns also using candles to melt walls of ice until he comes across the Sorcerer)
Sorcerer: Wh-!? I remember you!
Jusqua: Ah-ha, caught you at last! Give me back the cat, or I'll make you pay for what you did to Urbeth!
(Jusqua defeats the Sorcerer)
Sorcerer: C-curse you… You leave me no choice—let's see how you like this!
(Sorcerer summons a Behugemoth whom Jusqua briefly fights)
Jusqua: I-is that it? Did I win already? Or…? Wow, what's a dog doing all the way down here? You better scram, pooch, unless you want to get caught in the crossfire.
(The dog that just appeared transforms into Brandt)
Brandt: Hehe. It's so much fun running on four legs, I want to do it all the time. Long time, [sic] no see, Jusqua!
Jusqua: Since when could you turn into a dog?
Brandt: I'll explain later. Right now, it looks like you need some help!
(Jusqua and Brandt defeat the Behugemoth)
Sorcerer: P-please don't hurt me! I'll give you your money back!
- You got the 10,000 gil back!
Jusqua: Forget that! Where's my cat, you no-good kitten-napper!
(The Sorcerer reveals the cat from under his cloak, and it runs away)
Jusqua: No, wait!
Brandt: Er, Jusqua… I didn't realize you liked cats so much.
Jusqua: I guess we both have some explaining to do. But first, we have to catch that cat!
Brandt: *shrug* Okay, if you want your pet back that badly. We're heading the same way anyway…
- Brandt joins the party!
Jusqua: Never in a thousand years did I imagine I would be rescued by Brandt of all people!
Brandt: Dogs are awesome. They have warm fluffy coats and can run really fast!
(Jusqua and Brandt make their way to the other side of the caverns to the snow town of Invidia, which has a massive egg in the middle of town)
(Inspecting the egg)
It's an egg… A really, really big egg.
Faithful Fox: That cat must be somewhere in Invidia.
Woman: I guess there's nothing we can do to hatch that egg now that the Mother Dragon is gone.
Polar bear: Invidia is a land locked in the icy grip of winter. If you don't have fur like me, you'll die of the cold.
Man in orange: We Dragoniers live a whole lot longer than humans.
Man in blue: Invidia is home to the Dragoniers. We Dragoniers have always raised dragons and watched over the world from high above in the sky, but now…
(Weapon and storage hut)
Man: If you had some Mythril, you could get a super strong hammer made!
Weapon seller: Thanks for stopping by! Take your time and have a look around.
Storekeeper: Welcome to the Storage Shop.
Brandt: Some people turn into chickens, hehe… It's a good thing I'm a dog so I can bail everyone out when things get rough! (Context: Jusqua turns into a rooster with the Transformation Staff)
(Lodging on the west)
Man: A cat just came bolting into the building like its tail was on fire!
Innkeeper: You'd better warm your bits after being out in that cold! It's 300 gil a night. Will you be staying?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: Sleep tight.
(No)
Innkeeper: Come back anytime!
Man: You should be able to steal Mythril from a Mythritoise, but they never come out 'cept at nighttime.
(Lodging on the east)
Man: Have you ever seen a real live Mythritoise? They sometimes drop Mythril if you can defeat them. Or maybe if you became a Bandit…
Sleepers: Zzz… Zzz… (only at night)
Sleeper in the lower right: Zzz… 'mma use that num'er there an'… (only at night)
Polar bear: Indoor games are bearry popular here in Invidia. Bear with me because I know it sounds tough, but you have to add and multiply numbers to get ten. If your attempts bear fruit and you get a high score, you'll even get items!
Game master woman: Oh, hello there! It's very cold here, isn't it? I suppose that's why we enjoy indoor games so much! Would you like to play our game?
- →Yes
- →No
(No)
Game master woman: Come talk to me any time you want to play!
(Yes)
Game master woman: Use multiplication to give your score a big boost!
Game master woman: There are some combinations that simply can't make ten, so don't hesitate to use the option to pass!
- Scholar Bear's Math Game
- MAKE THE ANSWER A 10!
- Use all the numbers to make the equation equal 10.
- Do it three times to win.
- You need to use the stylus and Touch Screen to play this game.
- Try making big numbers first and then subtracting from them.
- It doesn't equal 10 yet!
- There's no rush, so take your time and think about it.
- When you pass on a problem, you lose points.
Game master woman: You're really getting into it, huh? I'll give you this as a reward!
- You received an item: #!
(The player scores 250 points or more)
Game master woman: Wow, you're the first person to ever get such a high score.
(The crystal appears)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- How mighty you have grown.
- Long, so long have we waited for this blessed day to come.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Beastmaster!
Polar bear: Your score has a real bearing on the items you receive, you know.
(Armor and item hut)
Armor seller: How travelers survive the long, cold journey here, I'll never know.
Item seller: Travelers do well to brave the cold and come here in Invidia…
Man: I wonder if you can find ALL the treasure I've hidden in this village. (Note: Most treasure-hiders have the same dialogue)
(Chief's house)
Man on the left: It has always been that the chosen hero travels to Spelvia together with the Mother Dragon.
Man on the right: Maybe a high level fire spell? I bet that egg would hatch with a blast of Firaga.
Man upstairs: My word, did you people come from the outside?
Chief: Perhaps I erred in sending Rolan to Spelvia when he was so young.
(Rekoteh's room)
(The party finds Jusqua's cat, and talk to it in animal form)
Cat: Aire? Who the heck is that?
Rekoteh: What a wonderful rooster. And such a fine comb, too! (if spoken to by Jusqua in animal form)
Rekoteh: Who are you?
Jusqua: Can you just give me that cat?
Rekoteh: What? After we've become such good friends?
Jusqua: PLEASE! You HAVE to return her! She's special, more special than you can imagine!
Brandt: Sheesh, Jusqua, relax. It's just a cat. …Speaking of which, I wonder if Aire made it to Spelvia okay.
Jusqua: Huh!? Did you say Aire?
Brandt: Yeah. I was wondering how she got on after Arbor. You know she was a cat for a while? Cool, huh?
Jusqua: Y-you MET her? WHEN?
Brandt: Just before I came here. I helped her get rid of the curse that made her a cat. After that, we were heading to Spelvia to find a way to lift the curse of Horne, but we got split up.
Jusqua: …
Brandt: Are you okay Jusqua? You look kinda pale.
Jusqua: Why didn't you tell me that Aire was in Spelvia earlier! We've got to go there, right now!
Rekoteh: …Er, you know about Spelvia?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: It's the floating city, right? I heard that someone there might help us lift the curse from Horne.
(No)
Jusqua: No! But I have to go there to find my cat… I mean, my companion, Aire!
Rekoteh: Well, the best way I know to get to Spelvia is to fly—by dragon. Have you tried hatching the dragon egg outside?
Jusqua: Hatch the egg? How?
Rekoteh: *shrug* I really don't know. But I sure would love to go to Spelvia!
Brandt: Come on, let's check out that egg!
- Rekoteh joins the party!
Rekoteh: If you can hatch the dragon's egg, you'll be able to fly to Spelvia.
The grey cat: So warrrrrrm…
(Chief's house)
Chief: You want to go to Spelvia? Impossible! Not without hatching that egg.
(Town square)
Man in blue: A fearsome giant tortoise called a Mythritoise roams these parts at night.
(Brandt, Jusqua, and Rekoteh gather around the large egg in the middle of town)
Rekoteh: Here we go. One dragon egg.
Jusqua: So if we can make it hatch, we'll be able to fly to Spelvia.
Brandt: Cool! Jusqua, let's have a contest to see who can do it first!
Jusqua: Does EVERYTHING have to be a game? …Now, I've heard that dragons are born in fire. Maybe if we cast some powerful fire magic on it, like Firaga, that'll warm it up enough?
Brandt: Naw, you don't need fire. You just need to hit it with something hard to wake it up. Like, say, a Mythril Hammer!
Rekoteh: (I'm starting to think hooking up with these people was a bad idea…)
(Weapon and storage shops)
Weapon seller: A Mythril Hammer? Sure, if you bring me some Mythril, I could bang one up for you.
Weapon seller: Woah, that's Mythril, isn't it? With that I can make you a Mythril Hammer. But it'll take some time, so come back tomorrow.
Weapon seller: If you've come for your Mythril Hammer, it's all ready!
- You obtained a Mythril Hammer!
Weapon seller: I've lots of other weapons, too! Be sure to buy up what you need.
(Town square by the egg)
(If the party has Firaga)
Jusqua: Okay, let's give it a shot.
Brandt: You really think this will work?
Jusqua: Firaga!
Rekoteh: Wow, that's hot!
Brandt: See? Nothing's happening. I told you it wouldn't work. All you're going to get is a giant boiled egg!
(If the party does not have Firaga, but they have the Mythril Hammer)
Brandt: Okay, are you ready, dragon? Time to wake up!
Rekoteh: Do it gently…
(Brandt hits the egg with the hammer)
Brandt: YEOWCH!
Jusqua: I think you felt that more than whatever's inside that egg.
(Whichever way the player tried, it did not hatch the egg)
Rekoteh: Yeah! Dragons sure make their egg shells thick, don't they?
Rekoteh: Oh, wait, I just remembered something…
Jusqua: What?
Rekoteh: A long time ago, we used to have a town festival here, and everyone sang songs together.
Brandt: Oh-kay…
Rekoteh: Well, there was this one song that supposedly could wake up dragons. My brother used to sing it.
Jusqua: A song to awaken dragons…?
Rekoteh: We just need the Dragon Harp to play it properly.
Brandt: So let's go get it!
Rekoteh: The thing is, I don't know where it is. Father might know, though…
(Chief's house)
Chief: Have you hatched the egg?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Chief: Don't lie! There is no way you could, not without the Dragon Harp.
(No)
Chief: Hmmm. Of course, you wouldn't be able to. Not without the Dragon Harp…
Chief: The Dragon Harp lies somewhere deep in the caverns below the town. They are blocked with ice and crawling with monsters. No one has returned from them alive in years. But if you insist on going, you will need this…
- The Chief gave you the Magic Key!
Chief: That key will open doors that would otherwise be locked tight.
Chief: The Dragon Harp lies sealed beneath us.
(The party tests the key to the locked door in the room)
- Use the Magic Key?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- The Magic Key opened the lock!
(Invidia Underground)
Left dragon sculpture: Left and right, the dragons must face each other, and only then will the dragon path be clear. Four dragons there be. Turn two of the dragons thrice, and turn two of the dragons once.
Right dragon sculpture: The dragons come in sets of three. Turn one dragon, and his two friends will turn as well.
Reset the statues and start over?
- →Yes
- →No
(Brandt, Jusqua, and Rekoteh find the Ice Dragon in the deepest reaches of Invidia Underground)
Brandt: …!?
Rekoteh: The guardian of the harp!
Jusqua: …And it's coming at us!
(They defeat the Ice Dragon, and it disappears and leaves behind a harp)
Jusqua: Is this…?
Rekoteh: Yes…the Dragon Harp!
- You obtained the Dragon Harp!
(The crystal appears to Brandt and Jusqua)
- O, children of hope!
- The hearts of humankind grow cold.
- The icy souls are sealed the hopes of the morrow.
- O warm their souls, warm them with the Light!
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- Go forth with your courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(Invidia)
Chief: Th-that's the Dragon Harp! I never thought you'd actually…! Those dulcet tones should entice the young dragon out of its shell.
Rekoteh: Soon I shall see my brother once more!
(The party plays the Dragon Harp at the egg until it cracks)
Rekoteh: It's working! The egg is beginning to crack!
(A small flying dragon emerges)
Rekoteh: Look, look, the dragon has hatched! …Gosh, isn't it beautiful?
Jusqua: It thinks you're its mother, Brandt.
Brandt: Hehe. What a cute little feller!
Rekoteh: Look at those magnificent wings! He's still young, but he'll be able to fly us to Spelvia.
Brandt: Okay, then. Let's do it!
Rekoteh: Please take me with you. I have to see if my brother is still safe and sound!
Chief: Please go and see if Rolan is still safe and alive.
- Ride the dragon?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: Take us to Spelvia!
Rekoteh: Fly like the wind!
- So did Brandt and Jusqua hatch the dragon's egg.
- From within, a young dragon emerged, its magnificent wings spread wide.
- Together, the adventurers flew on the back of the dragon to the floating city of Spelvia.
Yunita in Urbeth & Tower to the Sky[]
- In the meantime, Yunita was still in Urbeth, having been left behind by Jusqua.
(Yunita wakes up alone in the Urbeth inn)
Yunita: Hm? Jusqua…? …What's going on? Why did Brandt and Jusqua both just take off on me like that? *sigh* Oh, well. I suppose I'll have to do everything myself. Now, let's see. First job is to try and find a way to lift the curse from Horne.
(Urbeth town)
Yunita: My goodness, look at that!
(The floating island of Spelvia approaches the Urbeth tower)
Man near the inn: Do you see it, too? It appears that Spelvia is passing over our town!
Man near town entrance: I thought I'd start a business, but I haven't been able to make a single penny.
Man on the docks: Climb the tower? Well, I guess it would be possible—if you had a Thunder Sword.
Woman outside the accessory boutique: The legendary city of Spelvia… I wonder what the world is like up there in the sky.
Beggar woman near the alley that leads to the Sorcerer's house: They say there's a rare tortoise with a mythril shell that comes out at night in the forest near the Hunting Caves.
(Magic shop)
Woman: Do you have a Raise spell? I definitely think you should have at least one.
(Yunita uses the Magic Key to open a locked item shop)
- You used the Magic Key!
(Locked item shop)
Saleswoman: Yes, do you need something?
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: If you need help, why don't you talk to Thauzand first?
(Pub)
Pubkeeper: Och, what nonsense these fools do spout. Reaching a floating city by climbing to the top of the Tower to the Sky? Indeed! (Town square)
Man: The city in the sky? I'm pretty sure my grandpa called it, um…Spelvia?
Beggar woman: Someday I want to climb the Tower to the Sky, too.
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Thauzand: Hello, hello. Are you looking for Jusqua?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Thauzand: He went off on his own in pursuit of the Sorcerer. I'm afraid I don't have any spare ships. Which makes it a wee bit hard for you to follow him.
(No)
Thauzand: Oh, so you want to lift the curse of Horne? I see, I see. You should go to Spelvia then. You've seen it, right? The giant island, floating in the air? The people there could help, I bet. Why don't you talk to some of the other merchants and find out more? Here, let me give you this. It's one of my finest.
- You obtained a Steel Sword (+5)!
Beggar woman: Buy something, would ye? If ye'll be going up the tower, I'd recommend a water-element weapon meself.
Man by the counter: If you're going to climb the Tower to the Sky, you'd better do a proper job preparing for it.
Weapon seller: You'd like to climb the Tower to the Sky? Well then, I guess you really do need a good weapon, after all!
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Trylion: Oh, hello. Aren't you Jusqua's special lady friend?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Trylion: Hohoho, liar!
(No)
Yunita: N-n-no! Certainly not!
Trylion: You're blushing like a rose! Here, I wanted Jusqua to have this. Will you take it for me?
- You obtained Trylion's Ring!
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: Are you one of Jusqua's friends? Are you looking for help?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Bylion: Spelvia, eh? Well, you could climb up there through the Tower to the Sky. But it's a long, hard climb to the top, and the place is full of beasties. You better be prepared! I tell you what. Why don't you take this? It might help, it might not…but either way, it's a gift!
- You obtained a flask of Potion!
(Mylion's armor shop)
Mylion: You were traveling with Jusqua, were you not? Is there something I can do for you?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Mylion: I see. You want to go to Spelvia to save Horne. The Tower to the Sky was meant to reach Spelvia, but I wonder if they really built it high enough. I bet these Rainbow Boots of mine will help a million. I'll let you have them…in exchange for some Mythril.
Mylion: Oh, goody, that's Mythril, isn't it? Here we go, a deal's a deal…
- You obtained the Rainbow Boots!
Mylion: I just KNOW you're going to find them very useful indeed. Good luck!
Man: I heard that you can walk on top of RAINBOWS if you have somethin' called Rainbow Boots. How cool would that be?
Saleswoman: Step right up! Won't you buy something from us?
(Tower to the Sky)
(On the tenth floor of the tower, Yunita finds a rainbow)
Apothecary: Did you know you can walk on rainbows? …If you have a pair of Rainbow Boots, that is!
(Yunita crosses the Rainbow Bridge to Spelvia)
Spelvia & Rolan's Soul[]
(Spelvia Dungeons)
(Using a healing pot)
- Your HP is fully recovered!
(Yunita comes across a white cat)
Yunita: Hello? What's a cat doing here?
(The cat transforms into Aire)
Yunita: Lady Aire! *sob* *sniffle*
Aire: Wh-what's wrong!? Why are you crying, Yunita?
Yunita: Forgive me, Your Highness. It's just that…I'm so happy to see you. You see, I always thought I was better off alone, that I didn't need anybody else. B-but now…
Aire: Oh, I'm so glad you're still willing to confide in me like this! I know I've been very selfish and bossy to you, and I regret it very much! I hope you can accept my apologies, I really do. And…I was wondering…well… Would you be so good as to travel with me from now on? As my companion…and friend?
Yunita: B-but of course! It would be an honor, my lady…that is to say, my friend.
- Aire joins the party!
(Spelvia)
Yunita: M-my princess…I mean, Aire. You seem different. This adventure has changed you.
Aire: I'm not the spoiled little princess you once knew. I'm a real adventurer now!
Aire: Ha! Yunita turns into a rabbit!? Well, we mustn't leave you on your own, then, in case a hawk tries to carry you away! (if spoken to in animal form)
(There is a grave marker in the middle of the floating island)
- It looks like a grave of some kind…
- You can just make out the words "Mother Dragon," but not much else.
Witch of the Sky: Oh my, a visitor? But I'm afraid that Master Rolan has locked himself away and will not talk to anyone.
Goat: The Fountain of Hope is a mysterious spring which brings all worlds together.
(Temple)
Faithful Fox: I wonder if anyone lives in the palace beyond.
(All denizens are golems)
Golem: INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDER ALERT!
(Battle against a Golem)
(When speaking to the golems in animal form)

(Left room)
Multiplayer golem: DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A MULTIPLAYER GAME?
Left golem: WE OPERATE SPELVIA ON THE BEHALF OF MASTER ROLAN.
Right golem: CAN YOU FIND MY HIDDEN TREASURE? (Note: This golem is the only treasure-hider with unique dialogue)
Right golem: YOU HAVE FOUND ⅛ OF MY TREASURES. DISAPPOINTING.
(Hallway)
Left goat: The golems that maintain this temple have been poisoned by the hate in Rolan's heart. They will attack any human they see.
Left golem guarding door: MASTER ROLAN HATES ALL HUMANS.
Right golem guarding door: MASTER ROLAN IS WEARY OF HUMAN GREED.
Goat outside the door: Rolan is still just a fledgling hero. Breaking a curse such as the one placed on Horne might be too much for him.
Golem: MASTER ROLAN MEETS NO ONE. MASTER ROLAN SPEAKS TO NO ONE.
(Hallway to Rolan's abode)
Goat: Rolan has been alone here in Spelvia for how many hundreds of years now?
Left golem: SPELVIA IS A FLOATING FORTRESS MADE TO RULE THE WHOLE WORLD.
Right golem: SPELVIA IS A FLOATING FORTRESS MADE TO SUBDUE THE WHOLE WORLD.
(Throne room)
Rolan: We haven't had humans visit us in a very long time.
Aire: Are you Rolan?
Rolan: That's right. My name is Rolan… Rolan the Play Hero… I suppose you've come to ask me some big favor.
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Yunita: Yes. Our home town of Horne is in terrible danger. Can you help us save it?
Rolan: I know about Horne. I never see you humans until you need help, then you come crying to me with your sob stories. Boo-hoo for you, I don't care!
Rolan: I hate you all, you selfish humans. Go away and leave me alone!
(Rolan's room)
- Rolan's diary lies here. Will you read it?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- Mother and Father were so happy when I was born. They believed I would be a hero, and they called me Rolan, after the great hero of history. I have to live up to my name, for their sake. But I don't know if I have the strength…
(Spelvia town)
Aire: I hate that Rolan! He's just like Yunita used to be! He thinks he can do everything on his own and refuses everybody's help.
Yunita: Is it possible to open the heart of someone who hates humankind so much?
Witch of the Sky: Rolan will not help anyone as he is now. His soul has been swallowed by darkness and sealed tight away. If you wish to make his heart free again, then you must enter this, the Fountain of Hope.
(Rolan's Soul)
Faithful Fox: The Fountain of Hope? It's an amazing thing, to be able to journey inside a man's heart.
Rolan: Do you really need my help that much? Are you so desperate to lift the curse from Horne?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Rolan: My soul has been swallowed by darkness. I am all that is left of Rolan's goodness, a mere shadow of what once was a kind young man. Alone, I am powerless. Yes, powerless… But with your courage and dedication, who knows? Perhaps united we can drive back the darkness.
- Rolan joins the party!
(Aire, Yunita, and "Rolan's goodness" enter a dark void where they find indistinct "ghosts")
- Catch me if you can! I'm here and there and everywhere—you'll have to move fast if you want to chase me down!
- You have to be quicker than that!
(The party catches up to the "ghost")
- I've been alone here in Spelvia for more years than I can count. The only voices I hear are pleas for help. Demands and entreats and prayers…over and over again!
- A long long time ago, Rolan, hero of the Dragoniers, vanquished the Dark Lord and saved the world. I received the benediction of the crystal, which meant I would inherit his powers and be the new hero… Supposedly, anyway.
- I could not even save my one and only true friend. Yes, the day I lost Mother Dragon was the day my heart was swallowed by the dark.
(Spelvia)
Yunita: Is it really right to go wandering inside someone's soul without their permission?
Aire: How can we make Rolan open up his heart again?
Rolan: … I am the last bit of goodness left in Rolan's soul, but alone, I am powerless to change him.
(In the depths of Rolan's soul, the party finds another Rolan)
Rolan: I couldn't even save my one and only true friend. I was weak, I was powerless, but still they made me a hero. Save the world, they said. The world? ME?
Aire: … But, but we need your help. Horne needs your help! You're the only one we can turn to.
Rolan: I've been alone for so long now. Why should I care what happens to you humans?
(Darkness begins to spew from the Rolan the party just met)
Yunita: There's nothing more wonderful than having people to rely on, having people turn to you in their time of need…but by turning away from them, you are making yourself as lonely as anyone can be.
Rolan: …
(A monster manifests behind Rolan)
Yunita: …!
Rolan: Wah!
(The Rolan inside the depths of soul runs to "Rolan's goodness" and merges with him)
Aire: If you want to be a hero, you have to defeat these monsters!
Rolan: No! No way! I can't do it…
Yunita: It's okay, Rolan. You're not alone anymore!
(Aire, Yunita, and the recombined Rolan defeat Geri and Freki)
Aire: We did it! We did it!
Yunita: Were those beasts of darkness the same monsters that controlled Rolan's heart?
Rolan: D-did we win…? Did I…?
Aire: Yes, you did, Rolan! You're free now. You don't have to hide away any more!
Rolan: Thank…you…
(Rolan fades away; as Aire and Yunita leave Rolan's soul, they find the floating island shaking with the skies turning dark)
Witch of the Sky: We are doomed! Look at the color of the sky! It began the moment that Rolan's soul was released… Somehow, his soul had kept the darkness trapped, but now it is free to pour into the world. If this continues… No! You MUST find Rolan!
(Aire and Yunita run into Brandt, Jusqua, and Rekoteh)
Brandt: Hey, you're both safe!
Aire: Er, hi, Jusqua…
Jusqua: Looks like you're back to your old self. That's good.
Aire: …Y-yeah.
Brandt: Yunita, I'm really sorry I left you in Guera without saying anything.
Jusqua: I owe you an apology, too, Yunita.
Yunita: It's okay, really. I know I wasn't strong enough to adventure with either of you. But you don't have to worry about me any more. No more holding you back, I promise. But we've got more important things to worry about. The darkness is overflowing, pouring out of Rolan's soul…
Brandt: Then we've got to find him!
- Brandt and Jusqua join the party!
Brandt: You know, I've learned something on this adventure. It's not about how you measure up to other people… What's important is that you do your very best all the time, and never give up, no matter what!
Brandt: So you turn into a rabbit? I bet you're having fun hop-hoppity hopping all over the place! (when talked to by Yunita in animal form)
Jusqua: I always used to just quit when the going got tough. But not any more—I'm going to see this through to the very end!
Yunita: I hope that none of you are going to sneak off while I'm asleep and leave me on my own again!
Aire: I know I've been a teensy, weensy bit selfish, but I'm going to be much better from now on, I promise!
(Temple)
Faithful Fox: Something's is[sic] definitely wrong. Go to the throne room, quickly!
(Throne room)
(Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita, and Aire find Rolan oozing darkness)
Rolan: HUMAN FILTH!
Aire: Rolan, snap out of it!
Yunita: It's no good. He can't hear a thing we say!
Rolan: DIE, HUMANS, DIE!
Rolan: …! R-run…while you still…can.
(Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita, and Aire defeat Rolan who is consumed by darkness)
Rekoteh: Rolan!
Rolan: Rekoteh…
Rekoteh: I don't care about saving the world, but I care about you, Rolan! You're my one and only brother. Hang in there!
Rolan: Rekoteh…
(The crystal appears to Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita, and Aire)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- Rolan's heart is free at last. A noble thing you have done.
- Long ago, Rolan was the hero who received our gift of Light.
- He drank up the darkness in others' souls 'til his own heart grew black and dark.
- In his mind he forgot the Light, and his soul was closed to all.
- The dark has been released, but now it threatens to engulf each and every land in this world…
- O, Heroes of Light, save all the nations!
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crowns of the Party Host and Hero!
- Go forth now, Heroes of Light…
(Back in the Spelvia throne room, Rolan lies on the floor with Rekoteh watching over him)
Rolan: The world of darkness…is drawing near.
Rekoteh: Hold on, Rolan, hold on! Please! My brother can't do it all on his own. Help him to drive back the world of darkness!
(Spelvia town)
(if trying to fly the dragon without talking to the Witch of the Sky)
Brandt: Look at those red clouds…scary! Maybe the Witch of the Sky can do something?
Yunita: Something very, very strange is happening… Perhaps the Witch of the Sky can tell us more?
Witch of the Sky: The darkness that poured out of Rolan's soul has warped the entire nature of time and space. Who knows what world, what era this might be? Brave people—brave HEROES—must travel to each nation of the world and quiet this raging storm of darkness… And as they do so, they will need to gather the legendary weapons that the hero Rolan once bore.
- Do you wish to ride the dragon?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
(The party rides the dragon out of Spelvia, leaving Rolan and Rekoteh behind)
Horne in the World of Darkness[]
(All villagers are stone statues)
Brandt: The fields are dry and barren. We have to make them fertile again.
Jusqua: Darn it. We still don't know how to save Horne!
Yunita: I'm not going to rest until Horne is safe and sound again!
Aire: I knew it. Father isn't here. But where could he have gone?
(The party uses the Magic Key to unlock the windmill)
Cid: Greetings. The name's Cid, and I'm your stats and info man. How about it? Want to know the score?
- →Yes

Guera area in the World of Darkness[]
(Guera)
Shopkeeper: Salutations!
Woman under a canopy: Ever since the king changed, our country has been thrown into confusion.
Man next to large urn: The Moon Folk were destroyed fighting to seal away Asmodeus, demon of the desert.
Man next to large urn: Are you looking for someone to feed you? (if spoken to in animal form)
Weapon seller: Salutations! We are here to serve.
Man in the north side of town: They say that a castle of sand appeared overnight in the desert to the east.
Cat in east side of town: A little secret from meow to you… The more powerful an ability, the longer it takes to conjure.
Cat above the multiplayer shop: The demon Asmodeus drains people of the will to act.
Pig in west side of town: A little secret from me to you… A Party Host is stronger the more people there are in your party.
Pig outside the magic shop: A little secret from me to you… An Elementalist who equips element armor is virtually invulnerable. True, or not?
Man in northwest corner: You know the castle of sand that appeared in the east? Well, no one comes back from it alive.
Man north of town: They say that a castle of sand appeared overnight in the desert to the east.
Brandt: I know the desert is mostly lifeless sand, but I still think it's totally cool.
Jusqua: So this is the magical kingdom of Guera?
Yunita: It's time to head into the desert… To the Moonlight Tower.[note 1]
Aire: Ooh, I'm GASPING for a drink!
Faithful Fox: It might be a good idea to meet with King Guera.
(Residence in east side of town)
Woman: I heard that Moonlight Tower has been rediscovered. It was built by the Moon Folk a long time ago.
Girl: A long time ago, the Moon Folk sealed the demon Asmodeus within the castle of sand.
(The party uses the Magic Key to unlock the residence in northwest side of town)
Woman: With a seedling from the Great Tree, we could transform this desert into something lush and green!
Left cat: A little secret from meow to you… Good things happen when a Scholar puts on a pair of Hermes Sandals.
Pig: Four forbidden towers stand in the world. Once you enter them, you have no place to go but up.
Right cat: A little secret from meow to you… There are crowns hidden in the four great forbidden towers.
Seagull: If you are finding it difficult to slay the foe, try upgrading your weapons at the shop in Urbeth.
(Residence in northeast)
Man: I bought an unusual urn the other day, but it broke as soon as I got it home. Now I have to find another…
Man: Okay, who let the animals in? (if spoken to when in animal form)
(Second magic shop only accessible in animal form)
Woman: Is it true that the king was once a gentle man? Really?
Spell seller: Hehehe, I have the best stock in Guera!
(Outside Guera Palace)
Left guard: This is the palace of King Guera.
Left guard: You're not allowed in here. (if talked to in animal form)
Right guard: Maybe if we had joined forces with the Moon Folk, they would still be around today…
(Guera Palace)
Woman: The magic circle will take you to the floors above.
Woman: Animals aren't allowed in the upper floors, you know. (if talked to in animal form)
Woman next to the magic circle: Salutations, and welcome to Guera Palace.
(Second floor)
Left guard: They say this nation was originally founded by the Moon Folk.
Right guard: The Moon Folk were wiped out fighting to protect us from Asmodeus.
(Left hallway)
Woman: In recent days, King Guera has begun acting most strangely.
Guard: Orders are orders when they come from the king. We must obey, no matter how wrong we think they are.
(Guards' lodgings)
Right guard: In our legends, the demon Asmodeus is said to be vulnerable to water.
Left guard: I have heard tell that seedlings from the Great Tree in Arbor contain boundless quantities of life energy.
Guard blocking the stairs: I could have sworn the king's shadow looked like a coiled serpent. *shudder* Maybe I've been working too hard…
(Right hallway)
Woman: If our talks with Arbor go well, we have a chance to transform this desert into a lush, fertile land.
Scholar: According to my research, the white magic of legend is sealed somewhere in the land of Arbor.
(Library)
Left scholar: I study the black magic of legend, but know not where it is hidden. One thing I do know—it is destructive beyond reckoning.
Right scholar: Tsk, tsk. If this impasse continues, war may well erupt between Guera and Arbor.
Scholar blocking the stairs: The demon Asmodeus is most at home in the desert sands. Perhaps he is vulnerable to water, like other desert dwellers…?
(Throne room)
Guard: We and the Moon Folk are descended from the same ancestors.
Scholar: Anyone can use a magic book. But the greater your Intellect and Spirit, the more power you can weave into the spell.
Scholar next to the king: Even with the seedling from the Great Tree, can we really make this barren land turn green?
King Guera: Who are you people?
Guard: Your Highness! Lord Krinjh has returned!
Yunita: …!
(Krinjh steps in and hands the king something)
King Guera: Ah, you bring the seedling of the Great Tree. Well done, Krinjh, well done!
Krinjh: No, sire. Ariadne is the one you should thank.
King Guera: Ariadne?
Krinjh: A woman of Arbor, sire. The only one who believed in me, and trusted me with this great gift. It was she who gave me the seedling.
King Guera: Now we can build a bridge…a green bridge that will bring Guera and Arbor together! You did well, Krinjh. You have the kingdom's gratitude.
Krinjh: By your leave, I shall return to the Moonlight Tower. There, I shall await news of your success!
(Krinjh departs without acknowledging the party)
King Guera: A seedling from the Great Tree! Together with our magic… Are you still here, travelers? If it is Krinjh you want, he is in the Moonlight Tower.
(Moonlight Tower)
(Krinjh is at the top, surrounded by monsters)
I have no more need of you! The power of Arbor is now mine!
Krinjh: B-but this is treachery!
Yunita: Krinjh!
Brandt: Hang on! We'll help you!
(The Heroes of Light defeat the Trollud Zombies and the Ghoul)
Krinjh: You are the travelers who were in the palace, aren't you? I am in your debt.
Brandt: Don't worry about it. We do this kinda stuff all the time!
Yunita: What about Ariadne? Isn't she with you?
Krinjh: Because she gave a seedling of the Great Tree to me, a foreigner, she was exiled from Arbor. She waits for me in Quicksand Castle. I have to go there…quickly…
Yunita: But you've been hurt! You'd never make it across the sands…
Brandt: Listen, we'll go and find Ariadne for you. Right, guys?
Krinjh: No, you can't. Without the Merkmal you will never find the castle…
Brandt: No worries—we've already got one!
Krinjh: I pray…you can do this thing…for me… Please…I beg you… Protect Ariadne!
Krinjh: My Ariadne! Please, I beg you…
Brandt: Krinjh rescued us when we were lost wandering the desert. Now it's time for us to return the favor!
Jusqua: A seedling from the Great Tree? Is that what the magical kingdom seeks…?
Yunita: Poor Krinjh and Ariadne…*sigh* But it's okay. It's not too late to help them!
Aire: Krinjh helped Yunita once before, didn't he? But why does Yunita look so sad?
(Quicksand Castle)
(The party finds Ariadne and King Guera in the sixth floor)
Ariadne: Wh-what do you mean?
King Guera: That Krinjh was just using you. He wanted the seedling of the Great Tree for himself.
Yunita: Don't listen to him, Ariadne, he's lying!
King Guera: What are YOU doing here?
Brandt: Krinjh sent us. We've come to rescue Ariadne from your clutches!
King Guera: You meddling fools. I'll teach you to interfere in royal affairs!
(The Heroes of Light fight King Guera, but fail to harm him)
King Guera: HAHAHA! You cannot hurt me! The power of the seedling is truly great!
(Krinjh rushes in)
Ariadne: Krinjh!
King Guera: So you still live…
Krinjh: Use the Merkmal! Shine it on him!
- →Okay!
- →No
(Okay!)
Yunita: Here we go!
(No)
Aire: Eh? You want us to do WHAT? (Note: The prompt is repeated until the player says Okay!)
- King Guera is bathed in moonlight!
King Guera: WAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! You fool, Krinjh, you pitiful fool! You were mighty once…but your time is past. You should have stayed in the desert where you belonged. Your Moon Folk are finished, do you hear me? With Guera, Kingdom of Magic, under my control, I shall build an empire that rules the world!
(The "king" transforms into the demon Asmodeus, whom the Heroes of Light defeat)
Asmodeus: Damn you…!!!
(Asmodeus disappears and the crystal appears before the Heroes of Light)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You have fought boldly and defeated the mighty demon.
- Now the Moon Folk will guide Guera to the correct path.
- There will be no war with the fairy folk of Arbor.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Spell Fencer!
(The heroes appear back to the top of the Quicksand Castle with Krinjh and Ariadne)
Ariadne: You have done Krinjh and I a great kindness. We will forever be in your debt. We shall take the seedling of the Great Tree to Queen Arbor and beg her forgiveness.
Krinjh: The king…was possessed by an evil spirit, in body and soul. In the legends of the Moon Folk, this shield was wielded by the great hero, Rolan.
- You obtained the Shield of Light!
Krinjh: Ariadne and I would have been lost, had it not been for you.
Jusqua: Wow, the Shield of Light! Probably best give that to a healer, or someone who doesn't have a lot of HP, huh?
Yunita: This country is safe now. Ah, how lucky I am to share this journey with you all!
Aire: In this world, there are all kinds of people who need saving—and all kinds of treasure to be found!
(Guera)
(The darkness has been lifted)
(Guera Palace throne room)
Palace guard: I can't help thinking that things would be better here if a man like Krinjh was our ruler…
Scholar: People don't like to talk about it, but the current royal dynasty are actually usurpers who turfed out the old regime.
Krinjh: I cannot shake the feeling that we have met before, you and I. …Or perhaps, that we WILL meet—in the future.
Scholar by the throne: The king had been possessed by a demon. The entire realm is in your debt—you will always be heroes in Guera!
Liberte area in the World of Darkness[]
(Liberte Port)
Official near port exit: This is the free town of Liberte, center of art and culture.
Seagull near port exit: Look at those clouds. This is going to be one heck of a storm!
Man near the inn: The artist who wins the Glassworks Fair is able to view Liberte's secret treasure.
Official on west side of port: The Liberte Glassworks Fair is about to get under way. It only takes place once every ten years!
Pirate under a tree: Our cap'n be actin' mighty strange these days. I wonder what be wrong with him.
Pirate by the sea: The cap'n never was much interested in art, but these days he be positively bewitched by the stuff!
Boy: It's not just animals that travel through the woods in the west—I've seen fairies there, too.
Seagull near boat: The power of Light, here in Liberte? Surely you don't expect me to know where it is!
Woman in the boat: Liberte glasswork is renowned all over the world for its exquisite beauty.
Brandt: Look at the ocean!
Jusqua: This town harbors some sad memories for us…
Yunita: What a beautiful town. It's quite the contrast to dusty old Guera.
Aire: *sigh* Lilibelle…
Faithful Fox: A famed artist lives on the island. Perhaps he knows something of the legendary weapons.
(Liberte Town)
Seagull: I saw fairies flitting around here before, but they've all disappeared.
Artist outside the inn: Pione is our greatest artist! He lives in a house on the west side of town.
Boy: Look, look. Isn't the sand beautiful?
Cat: I'm here on vacation. I came here from Arbor through the underground passages in the west.
Woman: The house to the left belongs to Pione, glass artisan extraordinaire.
Artist outside the item shop: Ooh, just you see. I'm going to win the Liberte Glassworks Fair this year! …At least, I hope I do.
Seagull near the lighthouse: Are you hungry? Want a fish? …No, of course it's not grilled. Does it matter?
Man outside the lighthouse: Some people think the pirates are targeting the Glassworks Fair, but they can't be THAT wicked, can they?
Official outside the museum: I once saw a beautiful fairy in the woods to the west.
(Inn)
Man: I heard the pirates wanted to steal a Liberte Vase. I sure hope Pione is doing all right.
(Residence)
Woman: Pione is the most skilled glassworks artist in town. You should definitely meet him, at least once.
Artist: A Liberte Vase is judged not just on its design, but also on the quality of the materials used.
Cat: When you fight the Leviathan, attack with full force when it is trying to Boost. Then victory will be yours, meow.
(Shop)
Equipment seller: We don't sell Liberte Vases or anything like that…but we have some fabulous weapons.
(Pablo's house)
Pablo: We're expecting our baby boy any day soon. We shall call him Apollo.
Muse: When our son is born, we want him to become a great artisan like Pione.
(Pione's house)
Pione: *sigh* It's just not quite right… Hello, travelers. Are you here for the Liberte Glassworks Fair? I'm embarrassed to admit that my own entry isn't ready yet. It still lacks a certain "je ne sais quoi"… I'm looking for something unique and beautiful to set it apart. If you see anything, do let me know!
Pione: Aw, what a cute little animal! Perhaps I could use an animal motif in my next work? (if spoken to while in animal form)
(Liberte Town)
Faithful Fox: I saw a beautiful light in the Animal Burrow.
(Jusqua & Aire's old abode) Jusqua: Pione, Pione… I'm SURE I've heard that name before.
Yunita: The whole town is celebrating the upcoming fair.
Aire: Of course! In THIS world, Lilibelle might still be alive!
(Liberte Art Museum)
(The ground floor of the tower is full of elaborate glass sculptures on display)
Woman: If you're looking for Pione, he lives next door to the house all decorated with coral.
Official: Liberte is a nation of peace and freedom, yet even here the pirates cause trouble and strife.
Pirate: Even us pirates be afraid of some things. Them beasties in the inland sea to the east, for example.
Artist: I wonder if Pione has finished making his piece. Ooh, I'd LOVE to know what he's working on.
(Throne room)
Official next to the king: The pirates have been up to all sorts of mischief recently. It is a most worrying trend.
King Liberte: The Liberte Glassworks Fair will soon begin. Ooh, I do love the fair!
(The party heads out to the Animal Burrow, entered when everyone is in animal form; they find a cobweb)
???: Hello!? Yes, you there! Can you help me please? I'm caught in this spider web…
- →Okay
- →Bye
(Okay)
Jusqua: It's a fairy!
Aire: Lilibelle!? Is that you? How come Jusqua can see you now?
Lilibelle: I'm sorry, do I know you? How do you come to know my name? …Ah, but never mind that. I owe you my thanks! If you happen to visit Liberte, look me up and I will repay your kindness.
(Lilibelle flutters away)
(Liberte Port)
Brandt: Seeing that fairy here reminds me of my time in Arbor.
Jusqua: Ah-ha, now I know who Aire was mumbling to all the time!
Yunita: Maybe we should tell Pione about the fairy?
Aire: I'm so glad I'm able to see Lilibelle again. This time, I'm not going to let her die, and that's a promise!
Faithful Fox: Pione seems even more troubled than before. Perhaps you should talk to him?
(Pione's house in Liberte Town)
Pione: I just need something beautiful, something special…
Lilibelle: Oh, hello again.
Pione: What the-!?
Lilibelle: Will you let me rest here a bit? My wings are all dirty and it's very hard to fly.
Pione: Look how she sparkles! Gorgeous!
Lilibelle: Aaah, that's better. Thank you.
Pione: Let me have that fairy! It's just what I was looking for to make my work complete.
Aire: No way! I'm no going to let you stick poor Lilibelle into some glass vase.
Pione: But why not? It's like the Liberte Vase was MADE for her. Together they will be so beautiful.
Lilibelle: Oh, well. If you put it that way. But I don't have to stay inside it forever, do I?
Pione: Of course not! Just until the fair ends tomorrow. Then you will be free to fly wherever you like.
Lilibelle: Do you think everyone will find me beautiful? Oooh, how thrilling!
Pione: Tonight I must put the finishing touches on my work. Come back tomorrow to see the result!
(The heroes sleep in Liberte for a night)
Woman: The Glassworks Fair just doesn't seem very important any more.
Boy: Did you hear? Did you hear? Pione has gone to the pirates' hideout!
Artist outside the item shop: Pione was abducted? But the fair's meaningless if my number one rival isn't participating!
Artist near the inn: Those dastardly pirates stole Pione's artworks.
Museum guard: Pione studied under one of the town's great artists from a very young age.
Faithful Fox: The Liberte Vase has been stolen, with Lilibelle inside. You must go to the pirates' hideout and rescue her.
(Pablo's house)
Pablo: So now the Liberte pirates are kidnapping people…?
Muse: The pirates are kidnapping people!? That's terrible. It makes you afraid to leave the house.
(Liberte Art Museum)
Woman: I do hope Pione is all right…
Official: Those dastardly pirates! If only we knew where their hideout was…
Artist: What? Pione has been kidnapped? But without my rival, how will I stay artistically motivated?
(Throne room)
Official next to the king: Oh, those blasted pirates! Now they're stealing the artisans' glassworks!
King Liberte: P-Pione has been kidnapped!? By pirates? But what will happen to the fair?
(Liberte Port)
Official on west side of port: Hmph, another of Drake's pirates. They want the secret treasure, but surely they won't actually hurt anyone… will they?
Boy outside the inn: Some people set off for the pirates' caves, but the monsters there are a real handful.
Jusqua: Oh, brother. Looks like we have to teach those pirates another lesson!
Aire: Oh, Lilibelle, we'll save you, I promise! You saved my life once, and this time I'm going to save yours.
(Pirate Hideout)
Pirate: Avast, me hearties! Are you noobs to our gang? Then what be the password?
- →Love
- →Freedom
- →Courage
(Freedom)
Pirate: Go on, then. You be free to come and go as you please.
(B1)
Pirate: Step lively now! One false move and the cap'n'll…the cap'n…
(B2 Left Room)
Pirate: Ahoy! What have you lot come here for? If you value your lives, you'd best hie off home.
(B2 Right Room)
Pirate: Ach, we failed the cap'n. We're naught but a worthless bunch of curs!
(B1 Right Room)
Pirate: Yo-ho-ho! Our hideout's fair teemin' with monsters. Keeping quiet's the only thing for a clever pirate to do.
(B3)
Drake: Bah. More meddlin' fools, riskin' their lives over things that don't concern them!
Lilibelle: Stay away, my friends! He's too dangerous!
Pione: Listen, you can keep my vase, I don't care about that. But please free Lilibelle first!
Drake: …N-no…please don't make me do that!
(A seadevil appears)
I gave you an order, Drake! Will you obey me? Remember, the lives of your crew hang on your decision! Do as I say, now. Squish the fairy!
Drake: …But…but… NO! I can't! I can't do it!
Bah, you pathetic fool!
(The Heroes of Light defeat the Seadevil)
Pione: Ah, what a relief! I could always make another vase, but if anyone had been killed…
Lilibelle: Thank you. Looks like I owe you—again!
Drake: Listen, 'tis not enough to repay the trouble I caused, but ye're welcome to me treasure. In one of the boxes ye'll find a Rusty Compass. It fits the pedestal in Liberte's Art Museum.
Brandt: The pirates are actually kind of cool, huh? You think they're looking for new crewmates?
Jusqua: The secret treasure that people keep talking about… Do you think that rusty thing could be it?
Yunita: Pione is going to be Liberte's greatest glasswork artisan, without a doubt.
Aire: Yippee! Lilibelle is safe and sound! We saved Lilibelle!
(The Heroes of Light loot the pirates' treasure room, and among other goods gain the Rusty Compass)
(Liberte Port)
(The heroes find Captain Drake being interrogated by an official)
Official: You know, it's not very motivational if you're always doing my job for me. Pirate control is MY responsibility!
Drake: Arrr, this be the end of Cap'n Drake's crew. We be disbandin'.
Boy outside the inn: Are you the ones who rescued Pione? You must be really strong!
(Liberte Town)
Boy: Pione is back in town. Does this mean we'll be able to see his masterpiece, the Liberte Vase?
Woman: I was so looking forward to seeing all the Liberte Glassworks, but they went and cancelled the fair.
(Pione's house)
Pione: Thank you, thank you! Now I can go back to preparing for the Glassworks Fair.
Lilibelle: You saved me again. Now I'm even more in debt to you than before!
(Art museum)
Woman: Pione is back, safe and sound. How can we ever thank you enough?
Official: You fought the pirates, and won!? Gosh, you children are terribly brave!
Artist: Good, good. Now I can focus on creating beautiful works of art again.
(Throne room)
Official: I see, I see. So the beast had kidnapped his crew and was threatening them with death?
King Liberte: Is that so? Pione is back safe and sound? Well that IS good news.
- You inserted the Rusty Compass into the slot!
(The island begins to shake)
Onlookers in Liberte Port: Whoa, what's happening!?
(The island begins to move and reveals itself as a giant whale that the Heroes of Light can steer with the compass)
(Liberte Town)
Official outside museum: To think we've actually been living on top of the sacred beast all this time!
(Jusqua & Aire's old abode)
Brandt: This…is…totally…AWESOME! I never believed I'd get to ride on the back of a WHALE!
Jusqua: I don't believe it! The entire island…is a whale!?
Yunita: This doesn't seem very safe. I mean, can we trust this creature?
Aire: It's simply amazing… The most incredible treasure I've ever seen!
(Pablo's house)
Pablo: An island that is actually a whale… I knew this town was special!
Muse: My son Apollo is due any day now. Pray for us!
(Art museum)
Woman: Gosh. Cetus, the sacred beast of legend, here under our very feet!?
Official next to the king: I thought it was just a silly legend, but the island really can move!
King Liberte: Cetus is awake at last. I fear this means that the world is in grave danger. Grave danger indeed…
(Liberte Port)
Boy outside the inn: There's a girl I fancy who lives over on that island…
Brandt: I don't believe it! The entire island…is a whale!?
Official interrogating Drake: Mighty Cetus is awake. Something very, very serious must be happening.
Pirate under the tree: Me old man always used to say, "That island is no island, son, it be a whale!"
Pirate by the dock: I remember me dear beloved Gran tellin' me that the island could move. T'think I never believed her!
Boy near pirates: The island with the lighthouse on it, just…swam away.
(When sailing the inland sea to the east on Cetus's back, the party runs into the demon Leviathan and defeats it, prompting the crystal to appear before them)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You resurrected mighty Cetus and defeated the demon Leviathan.
- Yet throughout the world darkness still grips men's souls.
- But you have the power to drive it back and bring forth the Light.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Dancer!
- Go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(Darkness is lifted from Liberte Port and Town)
Urbeth area in the World of Darkness[]
(Town of Urbeth)
(In town, everyone now wears white and is religious, whereas in the Urbeth Jusqua and Yunita visited in the future everyone had been wearing black and were obsessed with money; the "four merchant lords" from Jusqua and Yunita's Urbeth are now the four priests)
Woman near the entrance: This is Urbeth, city of faith. It is a bad time to visit, however, for we are gripped by a terrible plague.
Man lying on the street: …
Dog outside the multiplayer shop: It seems we animals are immune to human plagues. What a relief!
Man outside the storage shop: *sob* I had medicine, but I lost it.
Man lying down on the town square: I'm not afraid. The hero Rolan will save us. …At least, I hope he will.
Beggar woman outside the weapon shop: People say that medicine to cure the plague can be found in the Hunting Cave, but only the apothecary has ever made it back alive.
Girl outside the accessory boutique: The apothecary appeared just as soon as the sickness started spreading.
Woman lying on the floor: …
Beggar woman near the alleyway to the apothecary: If you're looking for medicine, the store down this lane should be selling some. You have lots of money, right?
Dog outside the apothecary: A traveling sheep recently told me that you could find medicine for this plague in the Hunting Caves.
Man near the inn: We have to hurry up and finish the Tower to the Sky so that we can beg the gods to save us from this plague.
Man lying down outside residences: …
Dog outside residences: There must be a way to save that little girl, Elith.
Man on the docks: It's like Beelzebub walked straight out of the legends to curse us.
Brandt: That is one REALLY big tower. I sure hope we get to climb it at some point.
Jusqua: I wonder how Thauzand is doing.
Yunita: This town was originally a place of faith and religion. But at some point along the way, people forgot about the spiritual side of things and became obsessed with commerce.
Aire: That poor little girl. Surely there must be some way we can help?[note 2]
(Bylion's item shop)
Bylion: You're seeking medicine, are you? Then look no further than one of my potions!
Man: Are you visitors here? There's a mysterious illness going around the city right now. It's probably best to leave as quick as you can.
(Pub)
Pubkeeper: There is a terrible, deadly pestilence ravaging the city now, and the only medicine is being sold at a dear price…
(Trylion's accessory boutique)
Saleswoman: Thank you for coming to our shop. We don't have any accessories to ward off the plague, but please take a look anyway!
Trylion: If you're desperate enough to pray to the gods, then you'd better equip some of my accessories as well.
Man: They say that the demon Beelzebub once brought down a plague just like the one we are suffering under.
(Residence 2)
Man: There's supposed to be medicine in the Hunting Caves to the south, but it's WAY too dangerous, so what's the point?
Dog: That apothecary doesn't smell human… He smells like trouble!
Woman: My mother has fallen to this evil sickness, but I can't afford the cure…*sob*
(Upgrade shop)
Man: I saw a huge face on top of the tower the other day. Scared the bejeezus out of me!
(Magic shop)
Woman: I've seen some strange people going into the Tower to the Sky lately. I wonder if they're going to pray…
(Mylion's armor shop)
Mylion: To think the pestilence would spread so quickly. Were our prayers in vain? Did the Tower to the Sky not please the gods?
Sales woman: Is there nothing you might need?
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Thauzand: Shush. Please, be quiet. My daughter is very sick. There's a merchant in town selling medicine that would help, but he wants a fortune for it. If only I had the money! If only I had the money!
Elith: Did you come to pray for me, too?
Thauzand: Blast! If only I had more money!
(Urbeth town square)
Jusqua: I really want to help Thauzand out. If we can just find some medicine for his daughter…
(Apothecary's house)
(The house that was the Sorcerer's when Jusqua and Yunita visited Urbeth before is now an apothecary's house; the Apothecary is the only person wearing black in Urbeth)
Apothecary: Hohoho. I suppose you want a flask of my fine Hi-Elixir, too?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Apothecary: Well, too bad. I'm sold out. I doubt you could afford it, anyway. Hehe. Maybe I should make another trip to the caverns in the south and replenish my stock.
(Hunting Caves)
(The Heroes of Light find the apothecary in the depths of the cavern amid a patch of herbs)
Apothecary: Hohoho. Are you here to meddle with my business?
- →Yep
- →No
(Yep)
Apothecary: Hoho! Didn't you hear? Curiosity killed the cat…and it will kill you, too!
(The apothecary transforms into an Orc Lord whom the heroes defeat)
- You obtained a flask of Hi-Elixir!
(Town of Urbeth)
Jusqua: I pray that we're not too late!
Yunita: Elith will be all right now. We just have to hurry to her father's place and give him the medicine!
Aire: To Elith, and be quick!
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Thauzand: Is that Hi-Elixir!? Did you bring it for US?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- You handed over the Hi-Elixir!
Thauzand: I'm overwhelmed… I don't know what to say.
Elith: Th-thank you…
- Thauzand used the Hi-Elixir!
Elith: Ah…
Thauzand: Good, good. I think she's asleep now. Thank you, my generous friends. Please, won't you stay at the town inn tonight? I would love to talk to you again.
Elith: ……
(Town of Urbeth)
Jusqua: I hope the medicine works…
Aire: Now Thauzand can stop worrying and be his old, carefree self again!
(The heroes spend the night at the inn)
Brandt: Boy, am I ever glad we found that medicine!
Yunita: Elith is surely recovering now. Perhaps we should go and check on her?
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Thauzand: There's something wrong with Elith!
Elith: Ungh…
Thauzand: Elith!
Elith: The goddess…is weeping…
Thauzand: The goddess? Can it be?
Elith: ……
Thauzand: The statue of the goddess…is weeping? Yes, yes, of course… Even we priests have forgotten to say our prayers. Please, will you look after Elith? I must go to the Tower to the Sky and pray with the other priests.
(Thauzand steps out)
(Town of Urbeth)
Jusqua: Curses! This isn't any normal sickness…
(Tower to the Sky)
(The heroes find the four priests and the apothecary on the tenth floor of the tower)
Trylion: Thanks to Thauzand we didn't stray too far from the path, but…
Bylion: I'm just a humble businessman. Yes, I neglected my faith, but is it a sin to want to make some extra gil now and then?
Thauzand: That filthy apothecary spread the pestilence and then made a killing with that overpriced medicine!
Mylion: It has been quite some time since we four priests last came together.
Apothecary: Hohoho. So, we meet again, eh? I wish we had time to celebrate our reunion, but now you and your priest friends must pay for your interfering ways!
(The apothecary transforms into the demon Beelzebub, whom the Heroes of Light defeat)
Beelzebub: Boo-hoo-hoo. How…did…you…defeat…? ARRRGH!
(Beelzebub disappears and the crystal appears to the four Heroes of Light)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You have defeated the demon of greed and saved the souls of those who would have faith.
- Kindness and generosity again fill people's hearts.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Alchemist!
- Go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(The party appears back to the summit of the tower with the four priests still there)
Bylion: Is this the fate that lies in store for all penny-pinchers and misers?
Trylion: You people might just be our saviors, sent from the gods.
Mylion: My wife is expecting our first child. Thank you. You came to save us in the nick of time!
Thauzand: I can't believe we were led astray by that monster… But what about my Elith? Is she safe now?
Brandt: This town has different gods than the ones we worship at Horne, but the power of faith is the same everywhere.
Jusqua: I've paid back a little of what I owed to the people here.
Yunita: Perhaps this'll be a wake-up call for people here. It's time they stopped thinking about money, money, money all the time!
Aire: Money is not as powerful as faith, unless you have oodles and oodles of it. …Oh, I'm just kidding. Sort of.
(Darkness is lifted from Urbeth and the plague disappears along with it)
(Town of Urbeth)
Woman near the entrance: This is Urbeth, the city of faith. Telling visitors about our fine city is my purpose in life!
Man near the town square: Can it be true? Are you the legendary Heroes of Light?
(Thauzand's weapon shop)
Elith: Oh, you all came! I feel so much better now, thanks to you. I hope we can play together someday!
Thauzand: Elith is as right as a new penny, all thanks to you! I don't have much money, but I can give you this by way of thanks.
- You obtained the Cape of Light!
Thauzand: I was using it as a blanket for Elith when she was sick, but it's no ordinary blanket, let me tell you!
Arbor area in the World of Darkness[]
(The past Arbor is not barred for human visitors)
(Outside the tree)
???: Do you, too, seek the secret of the Great Tree? I travel the whole world, searching for answers to its many mysteries. Arbor is FULL of mysteries! The Great Tree, fairies, magic…it's the most wondrous place I've seen! I cannot wait to explore it all. Farewell, till we meet again!
Ferret: I did hear once that some legendary white magic is sealed away in the roots of the Great Tree.
Elf woman: I wonder if you can find ALL the treasures I've hidden here in Arbor. (Note: Most treasure-hiders give the same dialogue)
Elf woman by the entrance: Be sure not to cause any trouble! There is a great debate now about whether we should put up a barrier to keep humans out.
Faithful Fox: Find the legendary white magic!
(The Great Tree)
Brandt: None of us have turned into plants. I guess the Transform Staff is protecting us. (before talking to the young wizard)
Brandt: Hey, I wonder how Torte the mouse is doing. (after speaking to the young wizard)
Jusqua: So this realm is the source of all magic in the world…?
Yunita: This isn't like any other forest I've ever seen.
Aire: Do you smell the air? So clean, so fresh… It's like my bedroom back in the castle! (before talking to the young wizard)
Aire: You haven't seen any mice running around, have you? (after speaking to the young wizard)
Fairy near the inn: Here in Arbor, our Great Tree is protected by the great and noble Arbaroc.
Wood nymph: There is a huge volcano to the north of Arbor.
Ferret near the multiplayer shop: It seems a traveling wizard is searching for that legendary white magic.
Fairy near the multiplayer shop: An unusual number of outsiders have come to Arbor in recent days. I suppose it is all right, as long as nothing bad comes of it…
Wood nymph near the multiplayer shop: All magic is born from this Great Tree. Magical power has gathered in its roots and branches for hundreds of years.
(Throne room)
Right wood nymph: The queen of Arbor is the most beautiful creature in the world.
Left wood nymph: Sssh. You are in the presence of the queen.
Queen Arbor: What is this? Travelers? I will not refuse you entry, but do not disrupt our peace. (before speaking to the wizard at the entrance)
Queen Arbor: A young wizard boy was seen entering the roots of the Great Tree. I can't imagine he is up to any good… (after speaking to the wizard at the entrance)
(Right arboretum)
Elf woman next to seedling: My word, are you outsiders? You should not be here.
Ferret next to seedling: Some young upstart of a wizard dared enter the Great Tree's roots!
Elf woman: There have been loud voices from Guera demanding a seedling of the Great Tree, but we will never hand one over.
(Left arboretum)
Elf woman near the seedling: This is where we grow the next Great Tree. What you see before you is a seedling—no, don't touch it!
Fairy: Yes, you can climb further up the Great Tree. But why would you? There is nothing up there.
Elf woman: There is a great demon here in Arbor, sealed away by the legendary white magic.
(Great Tree Roots)
???: Ah, if it isn't my adventuring friends! Hm. Are you also seeking what I seek?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
???: Ah-ha, just as I thought! They say there is a wondrous magic sealed up somewhere in these warrens. Perhaps we should work together to find it?
- →Sure
- →No
(Sure)
???: Marvelous! If you find something, don't do anything until I get there… Promise?
(The young wizard runs off deeper into the roots system)
(The Heroes of Light find a treasure chest deep in the root system)
???: W-wait! You must allow me to do the honors.
- →Okay
- →No
(Okay)
???: Thank you. Now, stand back. This MIGHT be dangerous…
(The young wizard opens the chest)
- You found Lux, the white magic of legend!
???: Hurrah! Now I'll become the great mage I always wanted to be! What the-!?
- You have done well, child.
- My name is Belphegor…and thanks to you, I am freed from my prison of sorcery!
???: Prison?
- There is much to do, but first, I shall make Arbor my own!
(The evil presence fades)
???: What have we done!? Oh, dear, oh dear! You kids had better flee while you can!
Aire: What are you going to do?
???: I must take this new spell to the queen. Fear not, I shall save Arbor, if it is the last thing I do!
(The Great Tree)
Fairy near entrance to the root system: Why, that little…! I told him not to enter!
Fairy near the inn: Arbaroc went after that demon and headed for the volcano in the north. Will he really be all right?
Wood warder: If the volcano north of here were to erupt, the entire Great Tree would be consumed in the fires!
Brandt: There's something…familiar about that mage. Very, very familiar.
Jusqua: You don't suppose that magic he found is the white magic of legend, do you?
Yunita: We can't leave things as they are. We have to do something!
Aire: This is terrible. If Queen Arbor needs our help, well, then we must help!
(Throne room)
Right wood warder: It is said that Belphegor was sealed away in ages past by the great hero Rolan and his Weapons of Light.
Torte: Have we met before?
Queen Arbor: If you're looking for that idiot who broke the legendary white magic seal, he's over there… The demon has gone to the volcano in the north. He intends to make it erupt and bury Arbor under the ash and lava. Arbaroc flew after the beast to try and thwart its plans, but I fear the demon is too powerful. You are strong and brave adventurers. Will you go to the volcano and help Arbaroc? The volcano in the north is easy to reach—if you have a dragon to take you there.
Torte: I never imagined that it would come to this! Yet I must accept responsibility. The demon has to be returned to its prison without delay!
(Torte [the young wizard turned into a mouse] rushes off)
(Mount Gulg)
- It's a device to redirect the flow of magma.
- Do you want to activate the device?
- →Yes
- →No
(The Heroes of Light find Torte, Arbaroc, and the demon Belphegor in the deepest part of the volcano)
Torte: Arbaroc! You can do no more![note 3]
Belphegor: Damn you, cursed eagle! Do you dare try to stop me!? I shall possess your body and use it as my own. Then no one will be able to protect the Great Tree!
Torte: Look out, Arbaroc!
(Torte tries to defend Arbaroc, but Belphegor swats him aside)
Belphegor: The rat dares intervene? Then the rat must die!
Aire: Torte!
Brandt: Okay, now I'm mad!
(The Heroes of Light defeat Belphegor and its three Cubes)
Belphegor: H-how could YOU…defeat ME…?
(Belphegor the demon dissipates and the crystal appears before the four heroes)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You have defeated the demon of fire and saved good Arbaroc.
- The future of Arbor, once in peril, is assured for all.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Monk!
- Go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(The heroes appear back to the depths of the volcano, where a magic circle has appeared)
Torte: Gracious me, you truly are an extraordinary group!
Arbaroc: How did you come to be in this era? Perhaps you, too, have been caught up in the distortions of time and space… I must thank you all. I doubt that I would have been able to defeat him on my own.
Brandt: I KNEW there was something familiar about that mage! Why didn't he tell me he was originally human?
Jusqua: So that is Arbaroc, great guardian of Arbor?
Yunita: Well, that's the volcano taken care of. The Arbor folk can breathe easy again.
Yunita: Even as an animal, you're still full of vim and vigor. I wish I shared your enthusiasm… (if spoken to in animal form)
Aire: Poor Torte. We'll put in a good word with the queen and maybe she will agree to make him human again.
(Darkness has been lifted from Arbor)
(Outside the Great Tree)
Elf woman: The legendary white magic is said to release your full potential and powers.
(Throne room)
Right wood warder: You did not seal the beast but defeated it? Could it be that you are stronger than even the hero Rolan?
Torte: Will the queen ever forgive me?
Queen Arbor: You protected the Great Tree and rescued its guardian, Arbaroc. In doing so, you saved the realm of Arbor and the entire natural world. In gratitude for everything you have done, I shall return this one to his original form.
(Torte the mouse turns into the young wizard)
Torte: Thank you, adventurers! Your Highness, what about the white magic I found…?
Queen Arbor: Do you need to ask? I think there is only one group of people who could be entrusted with magic so powerful.
Torte: Yes, of course. My friends, take this. Such a spell is too great for one such as I. But in your hands…
- You obtained Lux, the white magic of legend!
Aire: That's not true, Torte! You're one of the bravest mages I've ever met.
Torte: Why, thank you. Aire, you are too kind. But…
Queen Arbor: If she speaks the truth, perhaps you would be willing to serve me awhile, Torte.
Torte: R-really?
Queen Arbor: Yes, we have need of men of your caliber in the court of Arbor.
Torte: I cannot tell you what an honor that would be!
Queen Arbor: Behave yourself this time, or I'll turn you back into a mouse before you can say "cheddar cheese"!
Torte: O-of course, Your Highness! Although, I didn't really mind being a mouse…
Queen Arbor: You shall take the legendary white magic with you. I fear even greater darkness threatens our world.
Torte: Arbor truly is an amazing place. I shall stay here and endeavor to become a great mage in the service of the queen!
Invidia area in the World of Darkness[]
(The past Invidia has no dragon's egg in the town center)
Woman on town square: The southern Sun Temple once kept this land warm and safe, but now…
Man in red: It's too cold now. The dragon'll will never come to lay a new egg…
Man in blue: There is a legend that the great crater in which Invidia is built is the site where Spelvia was once rooted to the earth.
(The past version of Rekoteh is differentiated by not wearing her stripy ribbon)
Rekoteh: Leave me ALONE! Oh, sorry… Are you travelers from abroad?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Rekoteh: Lucky you. I bet it's a lot warmer where you come from. My name is Rekoteh. I can't go home until I've found the Dragon's Mark.
Rekoteh: My name is Rekoteh. I can't go home until I've found the Dragon's Mark…
(Weapon & storage shop hut)
Weapon seller: I don't know if you're looking for anything special, but I do my best to provide good stuff.
Brandt: Rekoteh has been shut out by her father.
(Lodging on the west)
Aire: Oooh, I can't STAND this chill. Bring me a warm cup of soup, and make it snappy! (before talking to Rekoteh)
Aire: Okay. This place is WAY too cold. Do you have a fur coat or something I can borrow? (after talking to Rekoteh)
Man: Do you really think Rolan will save us? I find it difficult to believe.
Innkeeper: Doesn't matter how long you try hibernating in the inn, spring won't come. But you're welcome to try, I suppose. It's 300 gil a night. Will you be staying?
(Armor & item shop hut)
Armor seller: I hope my armor might help you keep out some of this blessed cold.
Item seller: What would you like to buy today?
Yunita: I d-don't like the c-c-cold. (before talking to Rekoteh)
Yunita: My gosh, it is FREEZING. I can't feel my fingers or toes. (after talking to Rekoteh)
Yunita: Rekoteh has to do it all on her own? That's very harsh. (after talking to the chief)
(Lodging on the east)
Jusqua: Back in Invidia again. I wonder how Rekoteh is doing. (before talking to Rekoteh)
Jusqua: Do you sense it, too? Gloom hangs over this place like a black cloud… (after talking to Rekoteh)
Jusqua: What kind of father is that guy? Making Rekoteh go fetch the Dragon's Mark all on her own! (after talking to the chief)
Man: When you're fired up about math, you totally forget about the cold!
(Chief's house)
Man in blue: Rolan left for Spelvia…and the Ice Queen appeared in the Sun Temple in the south…
Man in white: They say physical and magic attacks don't really work on the Ice Queen…unless you're one of those legendary Alchemists.
Man in red: Welcome, strangers. You've from from the outside world, haven't you? The Dragon's Mark is sealed deep below our home.
Chief: You are travelers from the outside world, are you not?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Chief: So, what brings you to this chilly land? What's that? You want to know about Rekoteh? *sigh* She is weak, not like her brother Rolan. I told her not to come home until she found the Dragon's Mark. When Rolan saves the world he shall create an empire, and Invidia will be his capital. Until that blessed time comes, we must use magic to protect the town from winter's icy grip.
Chief: It is Invidia which will become master of all, once Rolan saves the world! Until that day, it is our duty to use our magic to shield Invidia from the icy cold.
(Town square)
Faithful Fox: The Dragon's Mark is somewhere below the main village building, or so I have heard.
(The party uses the Magic Key to open the way to the ice labyrinth under the town)
(Invidia Underground)
Left dragon sculpture: Turn the statues and form a dragon ring. As time flows and the clock ticks round, so too should the dragons face. Four statues there be. Turn one once, turn another twice, turn another thrice. Then the true path shall open.
Right dragon sculpture: The dragons come in sets of three. Turn one dragon, and his two friends will turn as well.
(At the bottom of the icy caverns, the heroes find a chest guarded by the Ice Dragon)
You are not one of the Dragoniers!
(The heroes defeat the Ice Dragon)
- You obtained the Dragon's Mark!
(Invidia town center)
- You showed Rekoteh the Dragon's Mark!
Rekoteh: W-wow, the Dragon's Mark! How did you get it? Don't tell me you have a Magic Key!
- →We do
- →We don't
(We do)
Rekoteh: B-but how? …I guess it doesn't matter. However you did it, you found the Dragon's Mark, no doubt about it. I have to tell Father!
(Chief's house)
Rekoteh: B-but it's true! These people really do have the Magic Key!
Chief: Outsiders have recovered the Dragon's Mark!? Impossible. Only I possess the Magic Key. Unless, by some strange miracle, you also have one of your own…?
- →We do
- →We don't
(We do)
Chief: And I thought there was only one in the world! …Still, that matters little now. All I ask is that you stay out of our affairs. My duty is to ensure the safety of Invidia until Rolan is ready to become emperor of the world.
Rekoteh: That's all you ever think about, Rolan and his stupid empire!
(Rekoteh runs to her room)
Chief: Rekoteh!
Chief: We wait here for Rolan to become a hero. We wait, no matter what you or anyone else says.
(Rekoteh's room)
Rekoteh: It's because of this cold. Invidia used to be a friendly, easy-going place, but now everyone is so serious. We used to have springs, too…before the Ice Queen arrived in the Sun Temple, that is. If I had the Dragon's Mark, I could get into the temple…*sigh* But there's fat chance of ME being able to defeat the Ice Queen!
(Lodging on the east)
Aire: Nothing is more important than family, and that's why we have to help bring this family back together!
(Town square)
Faithful Fox: The Ice Queen is lurking in the Sun Temple, just south of Invidia.
(Sun Temple)
- The Dragon's Mark responds!
- Hold the Dragon's Mark over the carving?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
(Passage into the icy Sun Temple is granted)
(The heroes find the demon Mammon at the bottom of the temple)
Mammon: You are bold and strong to have come this far. But you cannot defeat me. The land is covered in ice and the hearts of the Invidians are cold. In vain do they wait for their hero to rise!
(The Heroes of Light defeat Mammon)
Mammon: It c-cannot be…
(Mammon disappears and the crystal appears before the heroes)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You have defeated the demon and brought back the Light.
- Warmth returns to thaw the hearts of a people once frozen.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Shaman!
- Go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(The heroes appear back at the bottom of the temple, with a magic circle on the floor)
Brandt: I guess everything is okay here now. Although it would be even better if Rolan came back!
Jusqua: I hope we can help Horne the same way we helped Invidia.
Yunita: I hope the people here rediscover their pride. After all, they are the tribe of the hero.
Aire: *sigh* I miss my family. I want to see Dad and Sis again…
(Invidia)
(Darkness has been lifted in Invidia)
Woman in red: The dark freezing cold seems to be lifting…
Man in blue: You mean—you mean spring will come again?
(Chief's house)
Rekoteh: This is so wonderful. I can't wait to see my brother again!
Dragonier: I'm sorry, Rekoteh. We were all mistaken.
Chief: So it's you we have to thank. Ah, I haven't felt this warm in years!
Rekoteh: Oh, Father!
Chief: I'm sorry, Rekoteh, I was too hard on you. The endless winter has made my heart cold.
Rekoteh: Rolan has been sad, too, I bet. Even heroes feel lonely.
Chief: Of course they do. You know, my dear, I think it's high time we paid him a visit!
Rekoteh: Really? Do you mean that?
Chief: Absolutely!
Rekoteh: Yippee!
Chief: We truly are in your debt. Here, take this armor. It has belonged to the Dragoniers for centuries.
- You obtained the Armor of Light!
Spelvia area in the World of Darkness[]
(Spelvia)
Jusqua: How can this huge city float in the air?
Yunita: If Rolan can stand up and be the hero he is meant to be…
Aire: I wonder where Rolan went.
Goat: I fear Rolan's heart is still being controlled by his loneliness.
(Temple)
Left goat in the hallway: Rolan can be found underground. He is still far from becoming a hero.
Right goat in the hallway: The darkness in his soul grows. I fear the demon Lucifer may take advantage of his weakness.
Goat outside the throne room: If you want Rolan, I saw him going into the caves under the island.
Golems outside the throne room: SPELVIA IS A FLOATING FORTRESS MADE TO PROTECT THE WHOLE WORLD.
(Spelvia Dungeons)
(The heroes find the past version of Rolan in the bottom of the dungeons, differentiated by not wearing his crown yet)
Rolan: …! Visitors, here? But why…? Ah, you came at Father's behest, didn't you? You have come a long way just to check on my welfare. But you're wasting your time. I won't open my heart to anyone. Not any more!
(Spelvia)
Brandt: Let's face it, it can't be much fun having your soul invaded. We've got no choice but to drive the beasts out!
Jusqua: If no one told him he had to be a hero, his life would have been a far happier one.
Yunita: If Rolan had only realized earlier that he did not have to be alone, it need never have come to this.
Aire: I really hate people who go into giant sulks. I just want to slap them on the head!
Faithful Fox: Save Rolan's soul!
(The party enters the Fountain of Hope once more)
(Rolan's Soul)
(A figure of Rolan engulfed in darkness appears inside his soul)
Rolan: I…I never wanted to be a hero. They scare me…war and fighting scare me to death! Rolan the Hero, Rolan the Hero… That's all I've ever heard. But no one asked ME if I wanted to be a hero.
(The heroes find a monster inside the void of Rolan's Soul)
How do you come to be here? How do you wander the labyrinth of Rolan's heart?
(The heroes defeat the Arch Demon, which affects the figure of Rolan)
Rolan: The only one who understands me was my dragon. She never left my side. I sheltered behind her, hiding from the battles I was supposed to fight. I lived a lie…and that lie let the demons into my heart. They came to steal the power of the hero buried within me!
What manner of creatures are you?
(The heroes defeat another Arch Demon)
Rolan: YOU have courage to help people! Oh, how I wish I could be as strong as you… All I ever did was run… Run from people's hopes, run from my own destiny. If only I had a little courage, perhaps I could have driven away the demons myself.
Do not interfere. Soon Rolan's heart shall be ours!
(After defeating the third Arch Demon, the Rolan figure is cleansed of darkness and heads deeper into the soul; the heroes follow and find him facing a massive demon)
Rolan: Thank you. Now all I have to do is defeat the last demon. Will you lend me your strength?
- →Yes!

(Yes!)
Yunita: Of course! When someone needs you, it can make you stronger than you ever knew.
Jusqua: Besides, we like to see things through to the end.
Aire: I want you to be reunited with your sister and your father, the chief of Invidia…
Rolan: Thank you, my brave comrades! With your help, I'll finally become the hero I was always meant to be!
Brandt: Hey, what are friends for? We'd never leave you in the lurch, ever. And don't you forget it!
Lucifer: Grrr! If it were not for you…!
(The Heroes of Light defeat Lucifer)
Lucifer: Curse you all! May you burn in damnation's fire for all eternity!
(Lucifer disappears and the crystal appears before the heroes)
- O, Heroes of Light, well you have safeguarded Rolan's soul!
- You find yourselves in an alternate world, a world that was destined to be saved by the original Rolan of legend.
- The demons you face are mere servants of the Dark Lord himself.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Paladin!
- O, Heroes of Light!
- Join now with Rolan the champion, and bring Light back to the world!
(The heroes appear back in Spelvia, where the darkness has been lifted)
Witch of the Sky: O, Heroes of Light, chosen by the crystal! Travel this world and gather to you the power of Light! If you can only repair the distortions that are even now appearing in each land, then perhaps this world can be saved.
Goat: Rolan's soul is finally free from that terrible loneliness. At least that is one small victory…
Brandt: Let's go talk to Rolan!
Jusqua: Invading someone's soul because you're too afraid to face them squarely is really low.
Yunita: No matter how much power you have, a heart that is alone can never be strong.
Aire: I wonder how Rolan is doing now.
(Temple)
(The golems are no longer hostile to the party when they are in human form)
(Left room)
Golem: PERHAPS THE DARK LORD CANNOT BE DEFEATED WITHOUT UPGRADING ONE'S EQUIPMENT WITH GEMS.
(Hallway)
Goat: Rolan's soul is filled with hope. Perhaps now he will become the hero that destiny decreed.
Left golem by the door: YOU HAVE SAVED MASTER ROLAN. ARE YOU WHAT THEY CALL "HEROES"?
Right golem by the door: WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT YOU ASSISTED MASTER ROLAN.
Right golem: THANK YOU FOR SAVING MASTER ROLAN.
(Room before throne room)
Left goat: The demon consuming Rolan's soul may be gone, but other demons throughout the world must still be defeated.
Goat: Thank you for saving Rolan. But now darkness infects every region of the world. Can you free them all?
(Throne room)
Rolan: You entered my dreams, and gave me courage. I will forever be in your debt. At last, I can stand on my own two feet. I shall travel the world with my dragon. I will learn more of its people and become a hero to everyone. Then, at the end of my journey, I shall return to Father and Rekoteh. I have a feeling we will meet again someday. Don't you?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Rolan: Then it's a promise. Here, take this. Consider it a gift, something to remind you of when we fought side by side. It was once wielded by a great hero, but I have no more need of it now.
- You obtained the Sword of Light!
Rolan: Farewell…for now!
(Rolan runs off and a dragon's cry sounds out from the distance)
Horne no longer petrified[]
(After defeating demons in the other nations, the Heroes of Light head to Horne and find its denizens restored, but no one knows who the heroes are and darkness still hangs above it)
Town guard: This is the windy town of Horne. You look like travelers, so don't overstay your welcome!
Woman in the southeast side of town: The Witch of the North lives quietly on her own beyond the North Caves.
Man near Brandt's house: Horne used to be a rich farming nation, but these days, with the lack of rain…
Woman in blue: I heard the witch was a vassal of a city in the sky.
Dog: I can smell it, you know. The world is in BIG trouble.
Boy: Did you know there's a magic lamp that can shine through lies and reveal the truth?
Man in blue: The king has been acting very strange recently. He must be worried about his wife.
Man near the inn: The queen recently gave birth to the second princess, Aire.
Woman in northwest side of town: This is super secret information, but there are dungeons below Horne Castle.
Woman in the crop field: Rumor says that a scary witch lives in the mountains to the north. *shiver* You won't catch me out there!
Man outside the multiplayer shop: I told the king that he was acting mighty strange, and he fired me as quick as could be…
Man in northeast side of town: Sheep are Horne's greatest treasure. Learn to treat them right, and one day they might return the favor.
Man in north side of town: The queen has been weak ever since giving birth to Aire. She rarely gets out of bed…
Brandt: It feels like years since I've been here. Things look different from how I remember them…
Jusqua: What happened here, in this time?
Yunita: Well, we've made it this far. Now it's finally time to save our own country!
Aire: I-I've just been born? I don't understand. Does this mean Mother is still alive…?
(Brandt's house)
Kuore: Somehow, you don't feel like strangers to me… …But I do wish this parrot would shut up sometimes.
Ankhel: Dungeon below castle! Dungeon below castle!
(Residence 1 in southeast)
Woman: I wonder if the queen is all right.
(Residence 2 in southeast)
Woman: More and more monsters have been appearing lately. I bet it's that witch's fault…
(Shop)
Man: Can we help you?
Woman: Welcome! This shop sells only the very best goods.
(Inn)
Innkeeper: Welcome to our humble inn! It'll cost you 10 gil a night. Sound good?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Innkeeper: Sleep tight!
(Storage shop)
Woman in red: Rumor has it that there's a magic research lab underneath Horne Castle.
(Residence in the northwest)
Woman: Some gems are very rare. It makes it hard to part with them, even though they fetch a pretty gil…
(Residence 1 in northeast)
Woman in red: I want to ask the Witch of the North a favor, so I'm collecting gems.
Woman in blue: Seeing as how we have a witch living nearby, we should ask her for help with the crops.
(Windmill)
- Sheep are the pride of our realm.
- First, pat the sheep's nose.
- Second, stroke the right flank.
- Third, stroke the left flank.
- Last, tug the tail…
- That's the way to handle sheep!
Shepherd: I made that sign so people would know how to take proper care of sheep.
Sheep on the left: Baa-baa. Have you learned the baaast way to treat sheep?
Sheep on the right: Baa-baa. The Witch of the North isn't so baaad.
(Horne Castle)
Left gate guard: Everyone is very upset over what happened to the queen. Please don't make too much noise.
Right gate guard: Are you a traveler? Well, this isn't a good time to visit Horne Castle…
(Lobby)
Guard left from the fountain: A traveler, eh? Well, if I were you, I'd leave this place and forget you ever came.
Guard right from the fountain: We're putting together a force to march against the Witch of the North.
(Guards' dorm room)
Guard: We can only pray that the queen will recover.
(Guards' storage room)
Guard: The king has a new daughter, Aire, but she doesn't seem to have brought him any joy.
(Throne room)
Left guard: Please leave. The king is out and we don't know when he'll be back.
Right guard: The minister went off to look for the king, and now he's missing, too. He was last seen headed underground…
(Carino's room)
Chambermaid: I saw it…in the dungeons below the castle. It's a… Oh, I mustn't say any more!
Carino: I have a new sister! She's called Aire. …But I hope Mummy gets better soon.
(The king's chamber)
Chambermaid: The king left his chambers with a dark look in his eyes. Where could he have gone?
(The queen's chamber)
Chambermaid: Ever since Aire was born, the queen has lain there in deep sleep.
Queen Horne: …
(Aire's room)
Chambermaid: This room has been set aside for the new-born Princess Aire.
(The party finds a door in the castle dungeon leading to a secret underground laboratory)
(Magic Laboratory)
(The party finds a mysterious dark altar and the king and the minister before it)
King Horne: I want to speak to the Witch of the North!
Minister: Y-Your Highness, you cannot be thinking of making a deal with the witch?
King Horne: If we can break the seal of this black magic, I will be able to rule the world.
Minister: B-but, sire. I cannot believe you will give up Lady Aire in exchange!
King Horne: Bah. It is only for now. Once the magic is mine, the witch will be powerless before me. She will have to return Aire then!
Minister: What are you adventurers up to? Are you trying to eavesdrop on me? Get out of here!
King Horne: Argh, what are you doing here? Get out of here, now!
(Town of Horne)
Brandt: What is the king blathering about?
Jusqua: Horne publically[sic] banned magic, but the government was secretly conducting magic research behind all our backs!
Yunita: To think, the king and the Witch of the North, in cahoots together!
Aire: O, Father, Father… You traded me in exchange for magical knowledge?
(Witch's Mansion)
Faithful Fox: Be careful. Danger lurks up ahead…
(The heroes find Louhi, the Witch of the North, on the roof)
The Witch: I am the Witch of the North. I do not speak with mere humans!
(Louhi transforms into Greaps, whom the heroes defeat; Louhi transforms back into human and Rolan arrives on his dragon)
The Witch: Are you…Rolan? The great hero of Spelvia?
Rolan: Sorry it took me so long, everyone. Hear me, Witch of the North! I command you to release King Horne from the contract that binds him!
The Witch: Grrr… V-very well.
Rolan: Good. Now Horne is free of the witch's curse. But we still have to snuff out the source of evil that grips Horne. In the cellars of this mansion lies the Lamp of Truth. With it, we can dispel the darkness around the king.
- You obtained the Master Key!
The Witch: Rolan has commanded me and so I shall obey. I must trust in you and your power of Light. No matter what happens from here on in, you must face it with courage. There is no turning back now.
Brandt: It all began in this mansion. But it's okay. If anyone can put things right, it's us!
Jusqua: Is this what the Liberte Investigation Unit were talking about? Is the king really up to no good…?
Yunita: King Horne isn't a wicked man! I believe that with all my heart. Be strong, Aire, be strong…
Aire: I believe in my father. He would never do such a terrible thing. Never!
(The heroes navigate to the locked door in the mansion)
- Use the Master Key?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
- You used the Master Key!
(The heroes find a room with three talking portraits)
- Hello, hello. We don't get many visitors down here.
- I suppose you're looking for the Lamp of Truth, aren't you? It's kept locked away in the chambers beyond.
- In one chamber you will find four candles and a door sealed shut. The lamp is beyond that door.
- To open that door, all four candles before it must burn with a red flame.
- The candles in the surrounding rooms burn the same color as those in the chamber before the door.
- By looking at the candles in the chamber, you can tell what color the surrounding candles burn.
- When one of the surrounding candles is lit red, another candle's blue flame will be extinguished.
- And when that happens, one door leading to that room is locked tight. The candles must be lit in order…
(The heroes find candles lit with blue flames and some not lit at all)
- The candle flickers with a blue flame.
- The candle is unlit.
- Light the candle?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
(The candle is lit with an orange flame and the corresponding blue candle goes out)
- A door closes shut!
(After doing the candles in a correct order)
- You hear the sound of a door swinging open!
(The heroes gain access to a room with a treasure, which they open to reveal monsters)
- If you seek the Lamp of Truth, you must battle us first!
(The heroes defeat the Doppelgangers)
- You obtained the Lamp of Truth!
(Town of Horne)
Faithful Fox: Where is King Horne? Perhaps he hides in the dungeons below the castle?
(Magic Laboratory)
- It is a stone door, carved with the image of a sheep. It is shut tight.
(The party finds a stone sheep)
- If you have love for Horne in your heart, and treat the royal sheep as they should be treated, doors shall open to you.
- It is a stone statue of a sheep. It faces forward/to the right/to the left/backwards.
- Touch the stone statue?
- →Yes
- →No
- The door is open. You can proceed within!
(The party enters the door opened by touching the sheep statues in the right order)
King Horne: Grrr. You again…
- Will you use the Lamp of Truth?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
King Horne: … CURSE YOU…!
(The king transforms into Satan, whom the heroes defeat)
Satan: NOOO! It cannot be!!!
(Satan disappears and the crystal appears before the four heroes)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- You have staunched the flood of darkness.
- The wrongs of the past are healed, the world is returned to its true form.
- But now something evil rises from the world within the world; the Dark Lord awakens from his sleep!
- Mighty Cetus, sacred beast of yore, can take you to the demons' dark world.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of…forbidden might.
- You obtained the crown of the Dark Fencer!
- Now, Heroes of Light, go forth into the world of darkness, and seal away the Dark Lord for ever more!
(The heroes appear back to the depths of the Magic Laboratory; Satan and the crystal are gone but a parrot drops down before them and transforms into the king)
King Horne: Thank you, my adventuring friends! That demon had taken hold of me and was trying to break the seal around the legendary dark magic of Horne.
Aire: Father!
King Horne: I'm sorry child, I don't think I know you. But…you do remind me of my darling wife, when she was young… Oh, dear, that reminds me! I must hurry back to the castle and make sure the queen and little Aire are safe! You will have to excuse me for now. But please do come to the queen's room when you can. I have a reward for you.
(The king hurries back to the castle)
Brandt: So Ankhel the parrot was actually King Horne!? Holy moly, you could knock me down with a feather!
Jusqua: I should've suspected something was amiss when the king gave me a spell book for the mission to the witch's mansion.
Yunita: At last, at last! Horne is safe again!
Aire: I am proud to be a princess of this realm and the daughter of its king!
(The kingdom of Horne is cleansed of darkness)
(Throne room)
Left guard: Thanks for saving Horne! The king is in the queen's chambers, far door on the right.
Minister: To think you fought the demon and won! Horne is saved, praise be to you!
(Queen's room)
Chambermaid: The queen has awoken from her long sleep!
Queen Horne: Have you come celebrate the birth of my daughter, Aire?
King Horne: Thank you, heroes. Long has this legendary black magic been sealed away. It is too dangerous for us…but I know in my heart that you will use it for good. Here, it is yours, as a token of my gratitude.
- You obtained the legendary black magic, Desolator!
(The ground begins to shake and a swirling portal of darkness opens off the coast)
King Horne: What was that? It was as if the ground itself…moved. I have a VERY bad feeling about this. Perhaps Rolan of Spelvia can help. Have you met him yet?
(Town of Horne)
Jusqua: We can't give up, not now. We will save our world by the strength of our arms…and our hearts.
Yunita: Can you feel that terrible, ominous power? But I'm not afraid in the slightest. Strange, isn't it? I'm going to help the people of this world. And they are going to help us…
Aire: I'm sure Father would tell me not to do this. But I have no choice. Where my friends go, I go, too!
(Brandt's house)
Kuore: Don't worry about me. You need to look after yourself!
Back to Spelvia[]
(Throne room)
(The Heroes of Light find the past versions of Rolan and Rekoteh, signified by not wearing their crown and ribbon, respectively)
Rekoteh: Please protect our world!
Rolan: The terror has begun! Have you seen it? Have you seen the world of darkness?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Rolan: The world of darkness has begun to swallow up our own world!
Brandt: What!?
Jusqua: How do we stop it!?
Rolan: You need the legendary weapons and armor that you collected as you fought the demons. The old Rolan the Hero used them to defeat and seal away the Dark Lord. Perhaps they will work again.
(A dragon's cry emanates)
Rekoteh: Rolan, monsters are attacking people all over the world. You have to help them!
Rolan: Unless someone enters the darkness and defeats its Lord, our own world has no future. It's a strange thing for a hero to ask, but I need you to save us. Y-you are my friends…my only true friends. I can ask no one else. I must go and fight the beasts that threaten the world's people. Will you enter the darkness and drive it back?
- →Yes
- →No
(Yes)
Brandt: Leave it to us! We aren't heroes, but we have a lot to fight for. No Dark Lord is going to get the best of us!
Rolan: I know you can save us. I believe in you!
Rekoteh: We'll meet again, for sure!
Rolan: I feel as if you people have saved me so many times now.
Faithful Fox: The sacred beast Cetus should be able to take you within the world of darkness that has appeared.
Star Chamber[]
(The heroes sail Cetus to the dark portal in the sea and enter the Star Chamber)
- Fools who play at heroes. You dare enter my realm?
- In this darkness, your powers have been taken away. Each of us have sealed your powers within us!
- You shall bear witness to the death of your world. Soon all will be embraced by the darkness!
(The heroes' crowns and abilities are taken away, and they traverse the darkness to defeat the demons that hold them hostage one by one)
Asmodeus: Good. I hoped we would meet again! If it had not been for you, Krinjh of the Moon Folk would be dead by now. Then the magic of Guera would be unleashed, and the world plunged into chaos and strife!
Belphegor: So, you dare trespass in this realm? If I could have made that eagle mine, then Arbor would have no choice but to bend to my Lord's will… You shall not survive this time!
Beelzebub: Hohoho… How delightful that we meet again. This, however, shall be the last time. You are to be dispatched to Hades, never to return!
Mammon: You again! Though you liberated the Sun Temple and awakened the hero… I will not allow you to be the heroes of THIS tale!
Leviathan: Bah! Do you and that vexatious whale dare try to stop the resurrection of our Dark Lord? I will deal with you first!
Lucifer: Rolan's heart was already MINE! Our plan was to stop the hero's resurrection… Little did we suspect YOU would become the heroes!
Satan: So you come so deep into the darkness, and yet you LIVE!? NO MORE! It ends here! You shall not reach the Lord of Chaos!
- You recovered crown powers that had been taken by the darkness!
(The heroes descend to the bottom of the ocean on a spiral staircase)
Brandt: We'll keep trying and trying, no matter how many times we get knocked down, and victory will be ours in the end!
Jusqua: It's true we humans have been weak. We have done bad things. But it's not too late to right our mistakes. As long as we have someone to believe in other than ourselves, we will never give up!
Yunita: The only way we lose is if we try to do it alone. As long as we have allies to stand shoulder to shoulder with, we cannot be beaten!
Aire: How is everyone doing? I must confess I'm very tired. But as long as we all stand side by side, we'll get through this!
(At the bottom of the ocean the party finds a portal to a void-like area, in whose depths they come across Chaos)
Chaos: Pathetic humans. All you're good for is hating and killing each other! I am the darkness that lives in your hearts. Three hundred years ago, the dragons dared to face and defeat me. But in this age, there are no heroes. Humans are weak. Humans are pitiful wretches. Come, my would-be heroes, and experience the terror of true power!
(The heroes defeat Chaos)
Brandt: *pant pant*
Aire: We…we did it!
Jusqua: You think…?
- GWWWAAARRR! Know the truth! There are no heroes in this age!
Yunita: …!
- For three hundred years, humans have nurtured darkness in their hearts.
- Witness and despair! The darkness engulfs humankind's world, and a new power is unleashed!
(Chaos reappears as a monster, whom the heroes again defeat)
- Hahaha! Why do you still strive? Surrender!
Brandt: Uh-oh…
Aire: I think…we're done for…
Jusqua: Come on, we're so close…!
Yunita: Maybe. But we can't take much more of this…
- WAHAHAHA! Your despair is my strength. Cast away hope, and I shall grow strong!
(The heroes are restored to full fighting capacity and visions of the heroes' allies appear before them)
Ariadne: Yes, it's true that humans aren't perfect. They fight against other races, they hurt the world… But I believe that humanity has the power to do great good, as well. I believe that love rules in human hearts.
Krinjh: You once gave me a gift of hope. Now, I can return that gift to you… Have hope, my friends, have hope!
Pione: There is weakness in humans, and ugliness, too. So much so that sometimes we forget that there is also great beauty. We can fill this world with beauty again, if only you believe!
Lilibelle: Don't give up, Aire! You cannot lose this battle!
Thauzand: You're not going to let this beast scare you, are you? Be strong, Jusqua. You're not the kind of person who lets his friends down!
Torte: Never fear, the maestro of magic Torte is here! The people of Invidia are battling to protect the world, and so am I. Ah, I wish you could see how bravely everyone is fighting. Stand tall, friends, because victory will be ours in the end!
Heroes: Those voices… Everyone is watching us!
- Wh-what is the meaning of this? What is this light? Can they be…true heroes?
Rolan: Dark Lord Chaos, even you must succumb to the light of true heroism… You thought that it was the sheer power of a single hero that defeated you last time. You were wrong.
Rekoteh: When people come together, no matter how weak or small they might be, there is nothing they cannot do!
Rolan: You will not be defeated by heroes. No. You will be defeated by the hopes and dreams these four friends hold in their hearts.
(The visions fade and the crystal appears before the heroes)
- …A crystal!?
- I see…
- The hope that gave past heroes their strength has been passed on to you…
- Very well.
- My darkness shall swallow all of time and space! Then no hope shall remain, and you will be powerless!
(The crystal shatters and Chaos reappears as a colossal space-time bending being whom the heroes defeat)
- The laws of the universe are twisted!
- Bigger Bang!
(Chaos explodes)
- It cannot be. I am defeated…again.
- Defeated by pitiful humans…again.
- But I shall not die!
- I will live on, in the darkness of your hearts. And one day, I shall return!
(The realm begins to shake)
Brandt: Whoa, now what?
Jusqua: We've gotta get out of here!
(The heroes rush to the exit and make it back to the ocean floor where Rolan is waiting for them on his dragon)
Rolan: This way, everyone! The world of darkness is collapsing, and soon it will be no more. Quickly!
Brandt: Does this mean I'm a hero now, too? …But then, everybody in the world is a hero, aren't they?
Jusqua: I wish I could tell my younger self what I know now. If you give up halfway, you'll never achieve anything. But if you stick to your dreams, and hold them close to your heart, you can change the world!
Yunita: Sometimes you help your friends, and sometimes they help you. That's what made us so strong, and that's why the darkness couldn't stand up to us!
Aire: Becoming friends with you three is pretty much the best thing that I ever did! You're better than a hundred servants, better than even hundred chests of treasure!
(The heroes hop onto Rolan's dragon and fly out as the portal of darkness collapses)
Ending[]
(Liberte Town)
Rolan: Thank you, Brandt. Thanks to all of you, the world is back the way it was.
Brandt: You shouldn't thank us. After all, we weren't alone!
Yunita: But I'm worried about what Chaos said. He said he would return…
Jusqua: And if he does, so what?
Aire: Yes. We weren't special, were we? Anyone could have done what we did. The world will be saved again.
Brandt: Okay, adventure over. Let's go back to Horne!
Jusqua: Hey, wait up! What about the legendary weapons and armor?
Rolan: They helped seal the world of darkness, and they belong to all of us… They belong to the whole world. Perhaps now would be the time to return each of them to the countries from whence they came?
Brandt: Okay!
(Guera throne room)
Krinjh: We always knew you could do it.
Ariadne: We believed in your courage.
(Yunita returns the shield of light to Krinjh but Brandt looks unhappy)
Jusqua: Hey, what are you sulking about?
Aire: Yeah, are you okay?
Brandt: Dammit! Krinjh, you have her heart now, but I'm not going to give up!
(He runs off)
Yunita: Brandt…?
Jusqua: Wow. That was totally out of left field.
Aire: I know you're both going to be so happy together!
(Liberte Port)
Pione: It's wonderful to see you all again.
Lilibelle: The queen gave me special permission to live in Liberte for a while. I love making things with glass.
Jusqua: So, Aire. Are you going to do any more treasure hunting?
Aire: Sheesh, Jusqua, can you drop it already? You can be so mean sometimes…
Yunita: Hehe. But from what I heard, Jusqua was awfully nice to a little cat called Aire.
Brandt: Is that right?
Jusqua: Oh, shut up.
(The party returns the Rusty Compass and thus Cetus becomes the other half of Liberte again)
(Arbor's throne room)
Torte: Greetings, my friends, and welcome back to Arbor! The queen and I are working together to rebuild the land!
Queen Arbor: We are establishing diplomatic relations with the human nations. Arbor will play a greater role in the world.
Torte: That's right. We've already held talks with Guera and my hometown of Invidia.
Brandt: But don't you have to go back to Invidia now?
Torte: Not at all. It's a new world out there. It doesn't matter where we come from, we can live and travel where we wish.
Queen Arbor: That's right. The world is changing for the better!
(The party returns the legendary spell Lux)
(Urbeth town square)
Thauzand: You kids have done yourselves proud. Although I guess I shouldn't be calling you kids any more.
Elith: Thank you for all you've done for us.
Jusqua: Sir…
Thauzand: Now, now, enough chit-chat. I'm a busy merchant, and time is money!
Jusqua: O-okay…
Thauzand: But listen, Jusqua. I figure you still have a lot to learn. So if you ever want to practice running a shop some more, you just let me know, you hear? You can visit any time you like.
The four merchant lords: We'll be waiting for you, all of us!
Jusqua: Okay!
(The heroes return the cape of light)
(Invidia chief's house)
Rekoteh: Thank you…all of you. You saved the world.
Chief: Indeed. You truly are heroes.
Brandt: Naw, it wasn't us. The world was saved by all its people, working together.
Chief: All its people… Yes. Thanks to you, we know that we can do great things, if we stand side by side. We'd forgotten that. All we did was dream of past glory, never thinking that we could change things ourselves.
Rekoteh: You've taught us to solve our own problems, instead of relying on some distant hero to rescue us.
Jusqua: No one is special. Everyone in this country is a hero, in their own way.
Rekoteh: My brother will be waiting for you in Spelvia. You should visit him…
Chief: We shall begin work on building our new nation—with Rolan at our side!
(The party returns the armor of light to Invidia)
(Spelvia)
Rolan: Hi, everyone!
Brandt: Are you still living here?
Rolan: Yeah, well. The dragon lives here, too. And someone has to protect the temple. But I'm not alone any more, am I?
Brandt: That's right! You can call us any time, and we'll come flying on the dragon's back.
Rolan: More than powerful weapons, more than powerful spells, true strength comes from a heart that is strong.
Jusqua: Amen!
Yunita: We never have to stand alone…
Brandt: Don't forget to come visit us in Horne.
Aire: Yes. You'll always find a warm welcome there!
Rolan: I'll be sure to drop by then!
(The heroes return the sword of light to Spelvia)
(Horne Castle throne room)
(The party returns the spell Desolator to Horne)
King Horne: Ah, if it isn't the heroes who saved the world! Pride of our nation, protectors of my princess, welcome…
Aire: Oh, Daddy, I didn't need special protection. I looked after myself!
Brandt: Now that you mention it, we did kind of let you fend for yourself a lot…
Jusqua: That's because she was a total pain.
Aire: I beg your pardon!
Yunita: Your Highness! Your daughter fought with courage and honor, shoulder to shoulder with us.
King Horne: Is that so? Some time when I wasn't looking, my little princess became a mighty warrior. But don't forget you're still a princess of the realm. You must resume your classes in decorum and etiquette…
(Dragon's cry emanates from the outside)
Brandt: Did you hear that? I think the dragon's calling us!
Jusqua: Something must be going on out there!
Brandt: Let's go!
Aire: I'm going, too.
King Horne: What!?
Yunita: Lady Aire, you cannot. You are a princess, your duty lies here…
Aire: Oh, phooey. Being a princess is boring.
King Horne: No! I will not allow it, do you hear?
Aire: Well, Yunita?
Jusqua: Aire has made her own choice. You can, too, Yunita.
Brandt: C'mon! What are you hesitating for? You know who your friends are, don't you?
(Yunita hesitates for a moment before stepping up to join Brandt, Jusqua, and Aire)
Yunita: I-I'm sorry, Your Highness…but I'm going, too!
King Horne: W-wait!
Yunita: Don't worry. We'll come back to visit every now and then, I promise.
Heroes: We're adventurers, and this world is our playground!
(The heroes rush out of the castle and the credits roll)

Bonus dungeons[]
(Moonsand Ruins/Holy Tree Tower/Mysterious Lighthouse/Trial Tower)
Man: This is a rather strange tower. It is built so that its floors change every time you enter it. Luckily, your progress will be saved each time you manage to clear ten floors. You can also leave the tower then. But if your whole party dies or you use a Dragon Wing, your progress won't be saved. Best be careful! Come talk to me and I'll tell you just how many floors you've made it through. And if you feel like starting over again from the beginning, I'll even reset your save point for you. Oh, and this tower's difficulty is Level 1/2/3/4.
- You used the Master Key!
(Boss floor)
- You have a chance to leave this tower now. Do you wish to do so?
- →Yes
- →No
(40 F)
Shopkeeper: Well done making it this far. Do you want to buy a little something for the road?
(100 F)
(The heroes defeat Krinjh/Torte/Rolan & Rekoteh/Adventurer & Faithful Fox and the crystal appears before them)
- O, Heroes of Light!
- How mighty you have grown.
- Long, so long have we waited for this blessed day to come.
- To thee I grant this gift of Light, upon thy head a crown of might.
- You obtained the crown of the Ninja/Sage/Scribe/Storyteller!
- All the crowns are yours.
- Hope.
- The mightiest power of all.
- Use your power well, use it for good…
- …and go forth with courage, Heroes of Light, go forth!
(Urbeth upgrade shop)
(The boss on the 80th floor of every challenge dungeon drops Orihalcon)
Upgrader: Whoa! That's Orihalcon, isn't it!? With that I could make your equipment even stronger yet! How about it? Will you hand it over?
- →Okay
- →No way!
(Okay)
Upgrader: All right! Now just one second…
- The item bonus limit was raised to 19/29/39/49/59/69/79/89/99![note 4]
Upgrader: If you find any more of it, I can make your stuff even stronger!
Notes[]
- ↑ Yunita tells the party to head to the Moonlight Tower in the Darkness Guera even before the party meets Krinjh and the King.
- ↑ In Urbeth veiled in darkness, Aire speaks about helping "the poor little girl" even before the player speaks with Thauzand and finds out his daughter is ill.
- ↑ At the end of Mount Gulg, the party only understands what Torte is saying to Belphegor and Arbaroc if the party leader is in animal form. However, the player would then need to fight the boss in animal form, too.
- ↑ Though there are only four towers, the NPCs outside each of them offer to reset the progress at the player's behest, allowing the player to repeatedly earn the Orihalcon.
