Fort Condor is a minigame in "Episode INTERmission" of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It is a tower defense tabletop game that the Sector 7 slums residents have recently taken to, and introduce to Yuffie Kisaragi as she arrives on Midgar on a secret mission from Wutai. As Yuffie, the player can take on various opponents around the slums on their quest to find and best the grandmaster, while finding various boards and pieces for the game. In hard mode, the minigame is tougher.

The minigame is based on the Condor War minigame from the original Final Fantasy VII.

How to play[]

Fort Condor starter pack from FFVII Remake INTERmission

Players pick their units before the match. The player can see the opponents board and units before committing to theirs, allowing them to pick the best units to counteract what the opponent has.

Each player has two weaker outposts on sides of their end of the field, and a headquarters in the center of them. The goal is to destroy the opponent's headquarters, or be one who destroyed the most towers when the timer expires (Easy/Normal mode only). The victory conditions are different between normal mode and hard mode; in normal mode, if it is a tie when the time runs out, the sudden death phase kicks in, and the first to destroy a tower wins. In hard mode, outposts don't affect victory: only destroying the HQ does. The sudden death phase also only lasts one minute; if the player can't win within this time limit, they will lose.

Fort Condor unit selection from FFVIIR INTERmission

Choosing units for a match.

Players can deploy units anywhere within the area they currently control. The number of units in one's loadout is 5–8, depending on the board in use. When enough ATB bars are available for a unit (ATB speed and amount depend on the board in use), it can be deployed from the loadout by moving the cursor to the desired spot, pressing X to open the menu, and selecting it. While having more units in a loadout allows for more variety, a smaller set makes it easier to start with the desired units since it is only ever possible to choose from up to four random units—for specific strategies that depend on the player sending out units in a certain order, the player may need to re-try the match until they get the desired pattern. Pushing the units onwards captures more of the field, allowing the player to place units closer and closer to the enemy's tower(s), and even right at the towers when they already have units attacking it.

Fort Condor victory from FFVIIR INTERmission

Victory for the player.

There are three types of units: Defense, Vanguard or Ranged. Defense is strong against Vanguard, Vanguard is strong against Ranged, and Ranged is strong against Defense. When deploying an available unit, it will indicate over enemy unit's HP bars if the unit is advantaged against them, or if the enemy is advantaged against the unit. Following this, the player can place the strongest unit available (indicated by the higher number) to defeat the enemies. Each unit requires different amounts of ATB to deploy, stronger units requiring more than weaker units. ATB fills up over time. Maximum ATB, starting ATB, and ATB recharge rate, depend on the the type of board. Each board offers some magic spells to use: offensive, defensive, or curative. Each spell can be used once per match.

The player's materia loadout depends on the board in use. Spells are cast by holding L1 and moving the reticule to a target. Spells can be cast outside the player's controlled area, making boards with many attack spells especially potent as they can be used to fire off spells right at the enemy's HQ even when the player doesn't have any units near to it.

Condor Coin from FFVII Remake INTERmission

Condor Coin.

The discovery quest for completing the minigame is called "Mastering Fort Condor". Yuffie needs to best all Rank 1 players to become eligible to rave Rank 2 players, and after besting them she can face Rank 3, and finally the Grandmaster. New units can be found in treasures, bought from shops, and won from winning the Fort Condor matches. Winning in Fort Condor also awards Condor Coins, which can be traded with Old Snapper for more Fort Condor units and boards.

Opponents[]

Yuffie can find various opponents to challenge around the Sector 7 slums, but can only play those the same rank as she is. After besting all Rank 1 players, she can move on to Rank 2, then the sole Rank 3 player, and then the Grandmaster. Winning in Fort Condor earns Condor Coins, new units, and sometimes new boards.

The opponents are tougher in hard mode, using "altered" boards that have the best speed and their towers have buffed stats. They are all considered to be Rank 5 and are available from the beginning, besides the Grandmaster, who is available to challenge once all other opponents have been defeated. Winning against them earns manuscripts; each win earns two manuscripts, one Secrets of the Ninja for Yuffie and one Secrets of the Staff for Sonon.

Polk (Tutorial)[]

Polk hosts the tutorial match inside the Sector 7 Clinic, during "Esteemed Avalanche Colleagues". The battle is straightforward: Yuffie need only deploy units that counter his.

Johnny[]

Johnny in the streets of Sector 7 Slums
Johnny's loadout

Johnny is found in the center of the Sector 7 Slums Residential Area, right from the rest spot map icon. He is a Rank 1 player, and tends to deploy defense units, meaning a loadout of mostly ranged units is ideal. The Sorcerer Board II that Johnny also uses can be used for great effect against him, as unleashing all three attack spells onto his headquarters will defeat him. This works even in hard mode (where he is considered a Rank 5 player). He can thus be repeatedly challenged to farm Condor Coins for use in Old Snapper's shop.

Kyrie[]

Kyrie Canaan from FFVII Remake Episode INTERmission

Kyrie is in the northwest end of the Residential Area, between Stargazer Heights and Seventh Heaven. She is a Rank 1 player and favors vanguard units, making deploying defense units ideal. She only has a single unit from defense and ranged, so Yuffie can have one unit to counter each. Kyrie mentions charging gil in dialogue; a message briefly appears on screen saying 3 gil has been lost after accepting her first match, and 10 gil for every subsequent match. However, no gil is actually paid from the player's balance.

In hard mode, Kyrie is a Rank 5 player. Using Sorcerer Board II, the player can unleash all three attack spells onto Kyrie's headquarters, to deplete most of its health. From there, the player only needs to focus on attacking the HQ to win; there is no need to defend one's own towers. To get to the enemy HQ the fastest, the player can let Kyrie deploy units that then approach Yuffie's towers without deploying any units yet, as to avoid the player's units getting stuck with engaging the enemy units, rather than attacking the HQ. The Guard Dog is a cheap unit that heads straight to the nearest outpost, which moves the territory line right up to Kyrie's HQ. The player can then deploy units right in front of the enemy HQ to quickly win. If the units get defeated and the territory line is pulled back, the player can repeat with deploying a Guard Dog first, from whichever side Kyrie does not have a barracks set up.

Shinra Middle Manager[]

Middle Manager in Intermission from FFVII Intergrade

Shinra Middle Manager is in the northeast end of the Residential Area, on the way to the train station. He is a Rank 1 player and favors ranged units, meaning a loadout of primarily vanguard units is deal. He has a single defense and vanguard unit. His board has a better ATB-recharge rate than previous opponents.

In hard mode, the Manager is a Rank 5 player with a faster board and towers with better stats. Using Sorcerer Board II with a fast Guard Dog unit in the loadout works against him as well as it did against Johnny and Kyrie, though there are many viable strategies. Unleashing all spells on the HQ does not quite destroy it, but does deplete its HP ~5/6ths. The Manager deploys his troops and they head to the player's territory, but it is best to wait without deploying anything until "the coast to be clear", and then send a unit from the middle line that will push the territory line all the way up to the Manager's towers. When the Middle Manager deploys a unit to defend his towers, the player can send out a unit that counters his, but focus on attacking the HQ.

Jessie[]

Yuffie and Jessie in Intermission from FFVIIR Intergrade

Jessie Rasberry sits outside Seventh Heaven. Jessie is a Rank 2 player who uses a mix of ranged and defense units. A mix of vanguard and ranged units should be used to counter her. An edge can be given to vanguard units. She has Grenadier Barracks, but her weakness is her slow ATB-recharge rate and stationary units.

In hard mode, Jessie is a Rank 5 player who uses a board with maximum speed and buffed towers. The player can keep using Sorcerer Board II with the same general strategy (though other setups are also viable) of using all spells on the enemy HQ and sending out fast units to push out the territory line up to the opponent's towers. As the Sorcerer Board II has slow ATB growth, the player can wait for their ATB to fill up while Jessie starts with her deployment, to have a lot of ATB available to deploy units fast; when the player has a unit attacking the enemy HQ, all of Jessie's units will focus on them; it is optimal to be able to deploy a fast unit, like a Guard Dog, right in front of the enemy HQ to get an attack in before being killed off; the spells against the HQ deplete most of its HP and the player only needs to get couple attacks in from their units to win. The Guard Dog is fast, but only goes for the HQ in favor of one of the outposts when placed dead center in front of it, so the HQ is the closest tower it can reach.

Roche[]

Roche in FFVIIR Episode INTERmission

Roche hangs out in the Pillar Plaza. He is a Rank 2 player who has a mix of ranged and vanguard units, making a mix of defense and vanguard units best against him, leaning more towards defense. It is still ideal to have at least one ranged unit against his M.O.T.H. Unit, though Magic Attacks can also help deal with it. A good strategy is to use a defense barracks against him early, ensuring a stream of defense units to attack him.

In hard mode, Roche is a Rank 5 player and uses a buffed board with the best speed and more ATK and HP for his towers, but keeps the materia and unit loadouts from Easy/Normal mode. The strategy with the Sorcerer Board II is still viable (though alternate strategies also work) of using all three attack spells on Roche's headquarters to deplete 5/6ths of its health, and sending out fast units from the middle to push the territory line up to Roche's towers to shave off the last little bit of HP with the player's units. As Sorcerer Board II charges ATB slowly, it is best to wait for it to fill until deploying any units, also allowing the player to see where Roche is putting his units to start off his advance. When the player has a full ATB bar, they can send out a Guard Dog from the middle on the side Roche left clear to push the territory line to the towers, and then immediately place a unit right in front of Roche's HQ.

Wedge[]

Wedge from FFVII Remake INTERmission

Wedge is found in the southeast end of the Residential Area, outside his house and among his many cats. As a Rank 3 player, he has an even spread of units, including many more powerful, higher-ATB units. A good strategy is to use barracks and overwhelm him with smaller units that counter his.

In hard mode, Wedge is a Rank 5 player, and like the other opponents, uses an improved version of his board with the fastest speed and more ATK and HP for his towers. The strategy with the Sorcerer Board II still works (other strategies are also viable), of unleashing all spells onto the enemy HQ and shaving off the last bit of health with the player's units; when the territory line is at his towers, the player can deploy their units right in front of Wedge's HQ. Some of Wedge's units can block the fire spell by standing in front of the enemy headquarters, and so the player may need to angle the board. Again, it is best to wait without doing anything else than casting the spells for the ATB to fill to be able to use enough units to defeat the HQ without the territory line being pulled back.

Grandmaster[]

Chadley outside neighborhood watch building.
Chadley's loadout.
Winning against Chadley.

Chadley is the final opponent in "Mastering Fort Condor".

The grandmaster is Chadley who reveals his status after Yuffie has beaten all other opponents. Chadley is found outside the neighborhood watch building. It is ideal to buy more powerful units from the Old Snapper: Helicopter (Defense), Slug-Ray Facility (Ranged), and Sentry Gun (Defense) are particularly strong units. Chadley mostly deploys barracks and flying units. It is important to avoid using melee units. Instead, Helicopters, Slug-Ray Facilities, Grenadier Barracks, and Helitroopers suffice.

In the hard mode, a strategy of using the Grandmaster Board and weak units that do not require much ATB to deploy may work well. Sending out a Guard Dog to beeline for the enemy outpost, a Security Officer as back-up, and then deploying a unit that counters the grandmaster's offense. Using Aero and Thunder on the opponent's HQ reduces its HP by half. It is best to stay on the offense to finish quick and not expend effort in protecting the player's own outposts, aside from perhaps using the Stop spell to defend one's own HQ. Alternatively, the player can keep using Sorcerer Board II, which has more ATB and attack spells than the Grandmaster Board, but the Fire and Blizzard may need to be aimed by angling the board and targeting the side of the tower that does not have the barracks in front of it to avoid hitting Chadley's barracks rather than his headquarters. If the player manages to unleash all attack spells onto the HQ, they can wipe out most of its HP.

Collected boards can be viewed in the key items menu. Different boards allow for different number of units and have differing ATB speeds and totals, outpost stats and materia. The Sorcerer- and Assassin-type boards prioritize offensive materia, while the Battalion-type boards focus on defense and support. The rarity level correlates with how good stats the board has.

Johnny uses the Sorcerer Board II when challenged, and gives Sorcerer Board II if he is the last Rank 1 opponent whom Yuffie beats. The board is also purchased from Old Snapper for two Condor Coins after winning against all Rank 1 opponents. The board comes with three attack spells. Sorcerer Board II can be one of the best boards in the game, as the player may be able to win, or severely weaken, the enemy headquarters by just using the attack spells. With most of the enemy HQ's health gone, the player only needs to push the territory line up to the enemy's towers (Guard Dog is good for this) and then deploy units right in front of the headquarters; the aim is to win so fast there is no need to defend one's own towers.

In hard mode, Johnny uses "Altered Sorcerer Board II". It is a rarity ★★★★ board with the same materia loadout and ATB, but the speed is 3/3 and the outposts are buffed with ATKs of 140, and 720 HP for his HQ and 600 HP for his outposts.

Battalion Board I[]

In hard mode, Chadley uses "Altered Grandmaster Board", but its stats and loadouts are identical to the board he uses in Easy/Normal mode.

Materia[]

The player's materia loadout depends on which board they are using; it is not possible to swap spells between them. Each materia has one use of one kind of spell, which the player can use at any time for no ATB cost. The spells are based on the magic the player can use during battle. There are no elements in Fort Condor; the different attack spells just have slight variations in effectiveness between them. Spells are used with L1 and can be targeted anywhere on the board, including areas outside of the player's current control.

List of units[]

The units are modeled after the enemies faced in the main game. They are reminiscent of the original field character models from Final Fantasy VII, especially the human units' blocky hands. There are 28 pieces in total, and obtainment counts toward Play Log completion for the DLC.

The Junk Shop along the street north from Seventh Heaven bar changes stock depending on progress in quests and Fort Condor. A quick way to get all available units from him (Security Officer Barracks, Missile Launcher, M.O.T.H. Unit) is to challenge a player to a match of Fort Condor, forfeit, and head to the shop, repeating this thrice.

Vanguard[]

Vanguard units are strong against ranged units, but weak against defense units.
