The Moonflow is a large river that bisects Spira's main continent into southern and northern sides in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The primary method of crossing is on shoopuf, an elephantine creature that can swim across the expansive river; the crossing service is funded by the Temple of Yevon, and is free of charge. Moonlilies (幻光花, Genkōka?, lit. Pyreflower) grow on the Moonflow's banks and pyreflies gather on its surface at night, making the water sparkle. Although a beautiful area, the weather is always overcast. The Red Lotus Lake in Kumphawapi, Thailand is possibly an inspiration for Moonflow.

In Final Fantasy X there are many merchants operating from each of the banks, including O'aka XXIII. In Final Fantasy X-2, the eccentric entrepreneur Tobli wants to put on a show here.

Final Fantasy X[]

Yuna in the Moonflow

Yuna and her guardians in the Moonflow.

Yuna and her guardians travel through the Moonflow on their way to Macalania Temple and cross the river via shoopuf. In the deepest part of the waters, the remains of an ancient machina city can be seen; legend says its people tried to defy the laws of nature by building on bridges crossing the river, but the city grew so large the bridges could no longer support it and it sank. According to Wakka, this story is a perfect example of the teachings of Yevon: having too much power and seeking to use it is dangerous.

The party's shoopuf is ambushed by the Al Bhed. Yuna is kidnapped and placed into their underwater machina, forcing Tidus and Wakka to fight it off. After docking at the opposite bank, Tidus finds Rikku washed ashore, and it is revealed she had piloted the machina. Rikku is actually Yuna's cousin, and joins the party as her final guardian. She discreetly alerts the others to conceal her heritage from Wakka who opposes the Al Bhed. Afterward, the party continues on their way to Guadosalam.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Moonflow

The bandits trying to steal from the carriage.

An eccentric stage producer Tobli is putting up a show on the banks of Moonflow, but his supply route is plagued by bandits until the Gullwings show up to help him. The Gullwings can help Tobli sell all the tickets for his show. Tobli's show goes underway, but turns out to be a flop. Tobli, now indebted to the Al Bhed, escapes through the Moonflow, and the Gullwings must catch him as they want him to promote a show the Gullwings want to organize on the Thunder Plains. Later, Tobli is having a new show on the Moonflow, and, depending on the player's actions, will perform poorly, mediocrely, or successfully.

Final Fantasy X -Will-[]

When Chuami and Kurgum are sent to Besaid by Baralai to meet with Yuna, Kurgum shows Yuna a movie sphere of two shoopufs at the Moonflow. The shoopuf was the last of its kind after the female was killed by Sin thirty years ago, but it mysteriously reappeared one morning, causing Yuna to believe the shoopuf had been "beckoned."

Kurgum tells Yuna she must accompany him and Chuami back to Bevelle and address the Spiran Council. As they pass over the Moonflow on an airship, they see the shoopufs and a crowd of onlookers, where half of the people are illusions created by the pyreflies. They see a father and daughter with the illusion of the girl's mother who answers her request for them to go home together, which stuns the group, since the illusions normally can't hear or speak. Kurgum insists the illusions should be sent to the Farplane, but Yuna says they don't have the right to interfere with the reunion.

Spoilers end here.

Locations[]

South Bank Road[]

The South Bank road is a long, straightforward stretch running between the Djose Highroad and the banks of the Moonflow proper.

In Final Fantasy X, there is a chest near Shelinda, containing three Lv. 1 Key Spheres. Near the turn in the road is a chest with an X-Potion. On the right side of the road, in the grass, is another chest with three more Lv. 1 Key Spheres.

Belgemine may be found near the end of the road, and challenging her to the battle will reward the party with the capability of adding abilities to aeons, along with Dragon Scale x2 for winning or Smoke Bomb x6 for losing. Just past her on the left is a hidden thicket containing a Magic Def Sphere.

South Bank[]

The South Bank is a small section of road with a good view of the Moonflow.

South Wharf[]

The South Wharf is where people gather to board the shoopuf to cross to the north bank of the Moonflow.

In Final Fantasy X, O'aka may be found here, and he will sell goods and weapons to the player. In the adjoining area, many more merchants peddling goods may be found. The area next to that contains a chest with 5000 gil, as well as a save sphere. More traders may be found in this area.

North Wharf[]

The North Wharf is located on the opposite side of the Moonflow, and will ferry passengers back to the south side.

In Final Fantasy X, a save sphere may be found in the section the party ends up at after riding the shoopuf. In the adjoining area, O'aka may be found, but he sells only items during this encounter. In the nearby waiting area, a treasure chest with an Ether may be found.

North Bank[]

The North Bank is a small area overlooking the waters of the Moonflow. In Final Fantasy X, Rikku may be found here. A chest with four Antidotes may be found to the right after Rikku's tutorial.

North Bank Road[]

The North Bank Road leads from the North Bank up towards Guadosalam. It is much shorter than the corresponding South Bank Road.

In Final Fantasy X, a Mega-Potion may be found on the left, midway through the road.

Musical themes[]

"Movement in Green" is the track that plays on the path to the Moonflow in Final Fantasy X. It shares the melody with the game's main theme, "Zanarkand", with an andante tempo. "Rides Ze Shoopuf?" plays at the Moonflow after Tidus sees the shoopuf.

In Final Fantasy X-2, the theme that plays at the Moonflow is "Mi'ihen Highroad". "Joost leave it tae us!" plays during Tobli's concert in Chapter 5.
