The Onion Bolts are ammunition for crossbows in Final Fantasy XII. They are the weakest ammunition for crossbows without any special properties, but crossbows cannot be equipped without owning some kind of bolts. Owning the Onion Bolts means the player can use an unlimited amount, and bolts do not need a license to be equipped alongside a crossbow. The bolts are metallic for the purposes of the magnetize debuff present in the Vinuskar and Ultima boss battles.

Obtain[]

Original[]

The Onion Bolts are bought for 100 gil from Nalbina Fortress, Dyce in Nam-Yensa Sandsea, Jahara, and Mt Bur-Omisace. They are found in a treasure in Dalmasca Estersand's Yardang Labyrinth Map 05 Dalmasca Estersand, Dalmasca Westersand's Shimmering Horizons Map 06 Dalmasca Westersand, and Dreadnought Leviathan's Large Freight Stores Map 08 Dreadnought Leviathan.

The player can also get another set from Supinelu in Jahara if the player gives him the Jaya Stick.

Zodiac[]

The Onion Bolts set is sold for 100 gil in most shops.

The bolts are found as a treasure in Dalmasca Westersand's Windtrace Dunes (65% chance to appear, 55% chance for an item, 50% chance the item is the Onion Bolts without the Diamond Armlet equipped) and in Trial Mode Stage 6 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.

The Onion Bolts are still given by Supinelu in Jahara if the player gives him the Jaya Stick.

Use[]

The Onion Bolts is the weakest set of bolts, adding but 1 point to the crossbow's power without any added statuses or elements. The player is meant to equip them if they have no better bolts to use; the Onion Bolts can be swapped out as soon as the player gets any other bolt set. The other Bolts are commonly available in the bazaar, sold in packs alongside crossbows.

Etymology and origin[]

Onion equipment is a recurring type of equipment in the Final Fantasy series, associated from the Onion Knight job that debuted in Final Fantasy III. The onion, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is used as a vegetable and is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium.

In a 2020 Famitsu interview with Koichi Ishii and Hiromichi Tanaka about Final Fantasy III, Tanaka stated that he created the term "Onion Knight" after seeing Ishii's character design for the job, likening the shape of its helmet's large, white plume to that of an onion.[1]

Fans had previously speculated that "Onion Knight" refers to the Japanese metaphoric idiom "peeling away one layer at a time and crying all the way" (referring to poverty) or from the slang phrase "to know one's onions" (meaning to be very versatile).
