The Ronka Ruins, also known as Lonka Ruins, is a location in Final Fantasy V. The ancient ruins were built by the Ronka civilization around the earth crystal, the power-source of this flying city. As the location of the earth crystal, it is also where four new jobs are obtained.

According to the "Chocobo's FF Laboratory" feature published in V Jump in 1993, the Ronka was built as a floating city because people believed the sun had the power to cure disease and wanted to live closer to it. The anti-gravity technology used to lift Ronka was the same as used in creating airships.

History[]

King Tycoon in Ronka Ruins

The party meets King Tycoon and Archeoaevis in the ruins.

The Ronka Ruins were built by the ancient Ronka civlization. The ruins were presumably built sometime between 1,000 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V—when Planet R and the crystals split[1]—and 500 years prior—when the Ronkan civilization collapsed. After their civilization fell, the Ronka Ruins were buried underground. The descendents of their civilization lived on in Jachol, a village geographically close by, and refer to the Ronkans as the "Ancients" while knowing some stories about the flying city.[2][note 1][note 2] Unlike other crystals, Cid Previa did not build an amplification device for the earth crystal, as the Ronka Ruins were hidden underground.

King Alexander Highwind Tycoon traveled to Gohn and reactivated the Ronka Ruins. Bartz Klauser's party, with Cid's help, modified their airships to fly higher and bypass the ruins' defense systems. Near the crystal room, they found King Tycoon impaired by the Archeoaevis, and followed his orders to defeat it.[4]

After the battle they followed the king to the crystal room, but the earth crystal shattered, and Exdeath broke free from his seal. A fourth meteorite fell near where Gohn once stood, this time carrying Krile, Galuf Halm Baldesion's granddaughter. She released King Tycoon from Exdeath's possession with a thunder attack, and the party escaped with her. Tycoon died protecting the party from the crystal shards.[4]

From the shattered earth crystal, the party gained four new jobs: Samurai, Dragoon, Dancer, and Chemist. With the earth crystal no longer sustaining the airborne structure, the Ronka Ruins crashed on the desert where Gohn used to be.

Geography[]

Ronka Ruins WM

The Ronka Ruins on the world map.

Prior to rising from the ground, the Ronka Ruins were buried beneath Gohn, a ruined town. After rising, the ruins fly in the clouds, higher than the airship can typically reach.

Ronka Ruins is the ruins of a flying city built by the ancient civilization. Much like the Catapult, another Ronkan construct, it primarily comprises moving gears around stone walls with pipes across them, and uses stone switches built in the walls to activate its doors. Due to its age, several growths protrude from the walls. The ruins have stone pillars resembling the rins of Gohn, as seen in the battle background.

Quests[]

The Ronka Ruins is an unrevisitable dungeon, visited for the quest to save the earth crystal. Before it can be reached, adamantite must be obtained from the Tycoon Meteorite for Cid to upgrade the airship. Throughout the dungeon, Blue Mage is useful to equip, as many enemies have Blue Magic spells to learn.

Musical themes[]

Similar to the Catapult, "Musica Machina" (ムジカ・マキーナ, Mujika Makīna?) plays as the background theme to Ronka Ruins. An arrangement of the theme mixing synthesizers and real instruments is included on the Final Fantasy V: Dear Friends album.

Other appearances[]

Final Fantasy XIV[]

As revealed in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, the First was once home to an ancient civilization known as the Ronka, who left a number of ruins behind. One of the empire's most sacred sites, the Qitana Ravel, serves as a dungeon and the lair of the Lightwarden ruling the sin eaters of the Rak'tika Greatwood. Unlike other fallen civilizations on the First, Ronka appears to have fallen long before the Flood of Light.

  1. It is unclear if the Ancients who built the Library of the Ancients are connected to those who built the Ronka Ruins. The residents in Jachol are descendants of the Ronkans, and many describe their own civilization which collapsed 500 years before the events of Final Fantasy V.[2] The Sealed Temple, built by the Ancients,[3] has an area named the "Heart of Ronka" that greatly resembles the Ronka Ruins. Though the Library of the Ancients share the name "Ancient", the library predates this, as it predates the separation of the worlds which occurred 1,000 years before the events of Final Fantasy V.
