Wing Raptor is the first boss in Final Fantasy V, fought at the end of the Wind Shrine. It blocks the path with its wings, attacking when the party approaches it. In the Finest Fantasy for Advance and the now discontinued 2013 Matrix Software versions, it is also fought in the Cloister of the Dead of the Sealed Temple bonus dungeon.

Breath Wing (2013).

Since the party has not acquired any jobs yet, the first boss is fairly straightforward. While its wings are open, the Wing Raptor will use the Breath Wing attack, dealing light damage to the party. When the wings are closed, the attacking stops, but the Wing Raptor will counterattack with Claw, dealing moderate damage to the character who attacked it.

Strategy[]

The party should attack while the Wing Raptor's wings are open and use Potions when required. It is advised not to attack when the wings are closed, but rather heal up if necessary.

If battle speed is set to 6 (the slowest), it is possible to defeat the Wing Raptor before it closes its wings once by having everyone on the front row and turning on Auto Battle.

Strategy

The Wing Raptor is yet another exercise in patience. Its wings are open at first, during which time it is vulnerable to any attack. After three turns the bird gets defensive and closes its wings. The party should follow suit, lest they be counterattacked by its lethal Iron Claw. Wing Gale is perhaps the more imminent threat, as it deals significant damage to all.

The player should have any White Mages in the party Cure and Protect allies as they are able. It is unlikely that players will hit the "wing close" target on the first pass, but there are enough levels above the boss area that the dungeon should be Mastered.

The challenge in Elite mode multiplies the difficulty more than threefold and should not be attempted until the player has reached at least Dungeon Update 10 or later and an average party level of 30 or better just to get the necessary Stamina. Such patience was rewarded when Gilgamesh was acquired in a Bonus Quest.

Etymology[]

Birds of prey, also known as raptors, hunt and feed on other animals. The term "raptor" is derived from the Latin word rapere (meaning to seize or take by force). These birds are characterized by keen vision that allows them to detect prey during flight and powerful talons and beaks.

The term "raptor" may also refer to a small dinosaur with the same characteristics as a bird of prey, such as the Velociraptor.
