Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode -Final Fantasy VII- is a fully-voiced mobile phone game and is a midquel to the original Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII- third-person shooter game for the PlayStation 2. It is part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. As the infrastructure required to switch episodes was shut down, the ability to fully play the game ended on on March 31, 2018.[3]

Lost Episode reveals a missing chapter from the sequel to the 1997 Sony PlayStation video game Final Fantasy VII, Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-. Taking place during the events of Dirge of Cerberus, it involves the adventures of Vincent Valentine struggling to save the world from Deepground, a mysterious army of superhuman soldiers.

Vincent learns that the Deepground soldiers are searching for him in the hopes of harvesting the Protomateria from his body. He decides to investigate the Shinra Mansion in an effort to uncover the truth about his own past — and the mystery behind the Protomateria as well. Reeve Tuesti's goal is to find information on Deepground written by Dr. Lucrecia Crescent. On his way to the mansion, Vincent's chopper is attacked by the Deepground. He survives and makes his way to the Shinra Mansion. The game's story consists of what happened en route to the mansion, events that were previously unknown to players of Dirge of Cerberus.

Behind the scenes[]

Development started in 2005 as a collaboration between the team behind Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- and London-based studio, Ideaworks3D. Producer Kosei Ito had the idea to create a first-person shooter for mobile, but Square Enix's Japanese teams were inexperienced with 3D games on the platform and had to seek outside help. The game was made to primarily target the North American mobile market and was originally not planned to be distributed in Japan at all.[4][5] A demo for the game was pre-installed on FOMA P903i phones.

A multiplayer mode was announced to release after the initial single-player launch, but it never surfaced. Similar to the Dirge of Cerberus multiplayer mode, "Deepground Elite Mode" would have allowed players to take control of a Deepground soldier and battle with others on the same mobile network.[6]
