Fenrir (フェンリル, Fenriru?) is a fal'Cie that appears in Yaschas Massif 10 AF in Final Fantasy XIII-2. It is a large, cloudy, skyborne entity that eclipses the sun and casts the mountains in darkness. Its appearance in 10 AF is a paradox and Serah Farron, Mog, and Noel Kreiss are tasked with fixing this anomaly, as Fenrir's appearance was calculated to only occur in c. 200 AF. The covered up sun looks reminiscent of the crystallized Cocoon. Fenrir is the largest known fal'Cie in the trilogy.

Fenrir has taken its place in front of the sun by the time Noel and Serah arrive in the Yaschas Massif at 10 AF. Fenrir's presence in the area has increased the amount of monsters inhabiting the pass, and searchlights have been constructed to protect the Academy staff examining the area.
Fenrir's presence in the Yaschas Massif is due to a paradox. According to ancient Gran Pulsian annals, it should appear 190 years later. The appearance of the fal'Cie casts shadow only at the Yaschas Massif and is attributed to a spacetime anomaly. Once Serah and Noel change history and visit Yaschas Massif in 01X AF, Fenrir has disappeared. It can be assumed that it won't appear again until 200 AF.
It is eventually revealed through the Datalogs that it is searching the skies for Etro's gate per the fal'Cie god Pulse's order.
Etymology[]
In Norse mythology, Fenrir is a monstrous wolf. Fenrir is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, Fenrir is the father of the wolves Sköll and Hati Hróðvitnisson, and is a son of Loki. Upon the coming of Ragnarök, along with his sons devouring the moon and the sun, Fenrir is said to destroy the planet, his lower jaw reaching the earth, his upper jaw reaching the skies. It is foretold to kill the god Odin during Ragnarök, but will in turn be killed by Odin's son Víðarr.
In Norse mythology, Fenrir's two children, Skoll and Hati, are supposed to devour the sun and the moon respectively. In some renditions, however, it is Fenrir himself that devours the sun and the moon.
