Description
Fear (FEAR on the NES) is a level 4 White Magic spell that attempts to drive all enemies away by affecting their morale. It has a low success rate. Affected enemies lose 40 morale points, increasing the chance they will flee on subsequent turns. Fear can be applied multiple times, to the point where even Chaos has a chance to flee. In the Pixel Remaster, there is no morale system, and Fear effectively does nothing.
The spell can be bought at Elfheim and can be learned by the White Mage and White Wizard job classes. In the GBA/PSP/iOS releases, it costs 10 MP to cast.
Final Fantasy II[]
Fear is a White Magic spell that increases the chances that one or all enemies will flee in the next round. The success rate increases with the level of the spell. Any character can learn Fear by having them use the Fear Tome (Fear Scroll in Final Fantasy Origins).
In all versions prior to Pixel Remaster, enemies start with a base fear value that differ between their species. From Dawn of Souls to Anniversary Edition, the Fear spell raises their current fear value in battle by 5 for every successful hit (e.g., Fear 16 can raise the value by up to 80). In earlier releases, fear value is instead raised by the caster's potency per hit, with Fear's base spell power at 20. Repeated casts of Fear will stack, up to a maximum fear value of 255. Monsters follow the following process to determine if they escape from the battle:
- A = Current Enemy HP × Number of non-KO'd / Stoned Party Members.
- B = Current Enemy HP × Number of Monsters
- C = A - B
- If C is negative, C = 0
- D = FLOOR (C ÷ 32)
- E = D + Current Fear Value
- F = E - 170
- If F is negative, 0 OR greater than 100, monster fights
- F = Flee chance out of 100
Due to the way the fear calculation is done, there is a possibility of overshooting the fear value and causing the monster to stay and fight. In general though, the fewer monsters present, the lower the current HP and the higher the fear value, the more likely it is for the monster to flee.
In Pixel Remaster, enemies have set chances to flee as marked in their AI scripts. As a result, the fear value of each monster is rendered obsolete, and the Fear spell effectively does nothing.
