A pleasingly plump summon recreate in virtual reality. It is the manifestation of the legendary chocobo, a symbol of fertility and good fortune. Fat chocobos appear in many a beloved fairy tale.

Enemy Intel

Fat Chocobo is an optional boss in Final Fantasy VII Remake fought in Chadley's VR mission after clearing 1–9 of Battle Intel reports. His untargetable moogle companions summon minions, and it is these minions that make getting the full Enemy Intel tricky as what spawns is random. Defeating him in battle yields the Fat Chocobo Materia Fat Chocobo Materia. Fat Chocobo is also summoned by Pride and Joy Prototype against the player party in the Shinra Combat Simulator in Chapter 17, "Deliverance from Chaos", in hard mode.

Though the Fat Chocobo is a recurring character in the Final Fantasy series, this is the first time he is fought as a boss.

Fingers crossed, kupo!

The untargetable moogle minions, meanwhile, use "Fingers crossed, kupo!" to spawn random mascot creatures, which may be a Plush Tonberry, Boom (bomb-type enemy), or Cactaur. If a moogle summons a Carbuncle, it will use Ruby Light to bestow Barrier Barrier onto the player's party for 60 seconds. If a moogle summons the Baby Chocobo, it will heal the player's party with Choco Cure. Both are available as DLC summons.

Battle

The earliest the player can take the Fat Chocobo on, they have the party of Cloud and Aerith. Fat Chocobo is on a higher level the later the player will challenge him.

Fat Chocobo resists physical damage, but the aim is to stagger him. Using magic pressures him the best. The boss's moogle minion summons mascot creatures familiar from the Final Fantasy series to its aid; the moogle cannot be targeted. The boss has numerous attacks, including throwing explosives and rolling around, and using its massive body to plop down to deal damage to everyone in the impact zone. Fat Chocobo using Kweh kweh! signals him moving to a faster and more damaging battle phase, and the number of explosives in its Bombs Away increases. However, the boss also becomes easier to stagger.

When Fat Chocobo is on low health, it will unleash its ultimate move, Kerplunk, that will deal great unavoidable damage to the whole of player's party.

Strategy

Using Regen Regen helps keep HP topped up. Linking Healing Materia Healing Materia with Magnify Materia Magnify Materia lets the player cast Regen on the whole party at once. Barrier Barrier is another useful spell to use, at least on the player's active character. As spellcasting helps in this battle, any magic-boosting accessories may be of use, as well as MP Up Materia MP Up Materia or Magic Up Materia Magic Up Materia if the party has the materia slots to spare. Spectral Cogwheel may also be good for Aerith, as it fills her Limit gauge for expending MP.

It is best to keep the number of enemies low by dispatching the minions the chocobo calls forth. When the minions appear, Cloud's Triple Slash helps take care of them. When the minions are dealt with, or there are only one or two around, the party can focus on the boss. Both Aerith and Cloud are good spellcasters, and magic pressures the bird the best. Aerith's Arcane Ward can be used to doublecast. As Fat Chocobo is neutral to elements, Lightning Materia Lightning Materia may be a good option for magic as thunder spells are cast instantly. However, the bird tends to sit down and not move much, making it a large and easy target to hit. Cloud can also pressure the bird with his Focused Thrust; he can keep attacking relentlessly in Punisher Mode, and as soon as he has the ATB, use Focused Thrust. When Fat Chocobo lifts itself up, ready to plop down, Cloud can dodge-roll away to avoid damage and then return to the routine.

Staying to the middle of the arena helps avoid damage from the chocobo rolling around. Aerith can place her Arcane Ward to the middle of the battlefield to make best use of it. When Fat Chocobo uses Kweh kweh!, it is a sign the player can now easily pressure him and should go all out with dualcasts and Focused Thrust. The bird stays staggered for a while, so if taking it on in later chapters, Aerith's Ray of Judgment or Tifa's Triangle abilities can be used to raise the stagger percentage. (This can also make the Fat Chocobo a good target for completing the The Stagger Effect Pt. 3 for Battle Intel.) It is best to build up two ATB bars for Cloud to use Infinity's End against a staggered Fat Chocobo.

Saving any summons till the latter portion of the fight might be useful, as the summon can help deal with the minions that the moogles summon so that the player does not get overwhelmed. Summoning Ifrit will likely draw the minions to him and he will fight them independently while Cloud and Aerith can focus on finishing off the boss.

When Fat Chocobo is on low health the player should be ready to heal, as its ultimate move is coming. It can't be guarded against, but Barrier Barrier may help as well as having full HP.
