Fastitocalon is a Triple Triad card in Final Fantasy VIII used to play the minigame and for turning into items with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Fastitocalon is the twenty-sixth card in the inventory and the fourth Level 3 card.
Being a Level 3 card, the card values on the Fastitocalon are not strong, but it has a 7 at the top, the highest value for Level 3, and its value placements may be useful for games that use Same and/or Plus. It is an earth-elemental card that is used for when the Elemental rule is in play. Elemental is encountered halfway through the game at Fishermans Horizon, though it is also a rule in Dollet and the Queen of Cards can be paid money to introduce new rules to a region. Placing Fastitocalon on a tile with the matching stone symbol boosts all its values by +1. This does not count toward Same/Plus triggering, but does count for Combo mechanics.
Obtain[]
The Fastitocalon monster has a 3.5% chance to drop the card. Using the Card command on a Fastitocalon has a 93.7% chance to procure a Fastitocalon card when it succeeds.
Any AI Triple Triad player who uses Level 3 cards has a chance of using Fastitocalon in a play, from where the player can win it in a card match.
Card Mod[]
A Fastitocalon card refines into a Water Crystal with Quezacotl's Card Mod ability. Water Crystal teaches Quistis a new Blue Magic spell, Aqua Breath, and thus it is a good idea to procure a Water Crystal early. The crystals also turn into Water spells with Shiva's I Mag-RF, which is a stronger spell than the tier 1 elemental spells available for drawing at the start the of the game; it is worthwhile to collect Fastitocalon cards in the early game if partaking in Triple Triad for modding purposes.
Physical version[]
In 1999, following the release of Final Fantasy VIII in Japan, Bandai produced a full set of collectible Triple Triad cards in Final Fantasy VIII Carddass Masters Perfect Visuals. The set was made up of the 110 cards as seen in the game along with 72 artwork cards and a collector's edition playing mat. The cards have a blue side and a red side. The cards have become a rare collector's item.
