Fastitocalon-F is an enemy from Final Fantasy VIII. It is a fiery red fish that often appears in groups of three. The "F" signifies it as a "fake" counterpart to the real, noticeably larger Fastitocalon.
When targeted in battle, the enemy is known simply as Fastitocalon; the name Fastitocalon-F is used for its Triple Triad card to distinguish it from the Fastitocalon card.
Fastitocalon-F is concealed by sand at the beginning of the battle, allowing only its fin to show. During this stage, it resists both physical and magical damage. After being attacked while its fin is below the ground, it may pop out into the air, preventing Quake from having effect, though Thunder remains useful.
Fastitocalon-F is the first significant source of AP in the beginning of the game. Its HP is also concealed when using Scan.
Fastitocalon-F is a card in the Triple Triad minigame. It is a basic Level 1 Monster Card that is also part of the starter deck obtainable at the beginning of the game. Five cards become one Water Crystal with Quezacotl'sCard Mod, making them worthwhile cards to collect if the player takes on Triple Triad early, as the Water Crystal can be used to teach Quistis a new Blue Magic spell and to refine into Water spells.
Fastitocalon-F are one of the three types of monsters that will never yield any boss card when successfully turned into a card in battle. The others are Ruby Dragon and Geezard.
[view·edit·purge]Fastitocalon is another name for Aspidochelone, a legendary sea monster whose back resembled an island that would lure sailors to their doom. Fastitocalon is also mentioned in an old-English poem called The Whale as a name for the Devil.
