Fang in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Oerba Yun Fang is an uncontrollable guest party member in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. She aids Lightning in battle wielding her default weapon from Final Fantasy XIII, the Bladed Lance. Fang joins Lightning's party twice, initially after Lightning joins Monoculus in the Dead Dunes and Fang asks her to open the path to the Temple Ruins. Fang will stay in Lightning's party whenever she is in the Dead Dunes until the main quest of that region is complete. She returns to aid Lightning on the final day in Luxerion Cathedral's Temple of Light, where Lightning finds her battling a Chimera and joins the fray.

Fang is not very strong compared to Lightning, but as she cannot be defeated, she works as a distraction by giving the enemies another target besides Lightning to focus on. However, her Bladed Lance is not comparable to the one Lightning can wield: Lightning acquires Fang's Bladed Lance by completing the "Last One Standing" sidequest, and when wielded by Lightning, it is the best spear in the game.

Stats[]

Fang has 6,000 HP in the Dead Dunes and 15,000 HP in Luxerion, though it is impossible to directly observe her stats and she cannot be KO'd in battle. Despite lacking an HP bar, she will occasionally use Mediguard. When Lightning uses Potions, Hi-Potions, X-Potions, or Nektar potions, they will apply to Fang as well. She can become afflicted with debuffs.

Abilities[]

Fang using Ruin from LRFFXIII

Fang's Ruin becomes Deshell Hunter.

Fang's role is akin to that of a Commando from the rest of the Lightning Saga games, using Attack, Ruin (non-elemental magic), and Armor Breaker (extra physical damage). Usually, she will attack the same enemy as Lightning, but when fighting multiple enemies who are close together, she will attack all of them with Blitz, and sometimes use Magnet to set them up beforehand.

Fang will also have aspects from the other paradigm roles she majored in as a playable character in Final Fantasy XIII. If the enemy is debilitated, either by player use or stagger conditions, Fang will use various "Hunter" attacks (such as Deprotect Hunter, Poison Hunter), changing her attack animation and dramatically improving her damage output against targets that have debuffs, in homage to her majoring as a Saboteur before. When a target is weak to an elemental attribute, Fang will use elemental strikes that target her foe's weakness, akin to how as a Ravager she was better versed with the physical strike abilities than spells. When "low on health" (though her HP is hidden and she can't fall in battle), Fang uses Mediguard in homage to her majoring as a Sentinel in Final Fantasy XIII. Her victory pose is to twirl her spear, then put it back on her back.

Quests[]

Fang-lightning

Fang aids Lightning in battle.

Fang joins the player at the Dead Dunes until the main quest there is finished, and in the final dungeon. To prolong her involvement during the main game and gain her help for the sidequests in the dunes and the underground temple, the player can put off finishing the Dead Dune main quest until they've had a fair use of Fang, such as for the Aeronite superboss encounter. However, her contribution in that battle would be negligible as she is mostly stuck using Mediguard. Fang's presence could even be a hindrance if she messes up the player's timing for staggering enemies.

Behind the scenes[]

If the player has both the Angel of Valhalla and Fang in the party (not possible in a normal playthrough), only the chocobo appears in battle.
