Refine Fire Magic from an item

Description

F Mag-RF (fire magic refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to make fire-elemental magic spells and Flare from certain items. Making spells from items is generally much more convenient than drawing from enemies, and can net high tier spells earlier than enemies would offer them, such as Flare for F Mag-RF.

Obtained[]

The Guardian Force Ifrit learns F Mag-RF for 30 AP. Ifrit is recruited from the tutorial dungeon, Fire Cavern, by defeating him as a boss. If the player removes F Mag-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get it back.

Mechanics[]

Using F Mag-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make spells from items currently in their possession and allocate the resultant spells to a party member who has space in their Magic inventory. Each party member has 32 slots for Magic, and can hold 100 spells of each type.

Item Refine Into
Bomb Fragment 1 = 20 Fira
Bomb Spirit 1 = 100 Firaga
Flare Stone 1 = 1 Flare
Inferno Fang 1 = 20 Flare
Magic Stone 1 = 5 Fira
M-Stone Piece 1 = 5 Fire
Phoenix Spirit 1 = 100 Firaga
Red Fang 1 = 20 Firaga
Wizard Stone 1 = 5 Firaga

Use[]

F Mag-RF is a great refiner ability to have, as on top of making fire spells it makes Flare, a top tier spell for junctioning that the player cannot draw from enemies or draw points until fairly late into the game.

Good early game uses are to make the Bomb Fragments the player likely collected from Bombs in the Fire Cavern into Firas. The player can also collect Bomb cards and turn them with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Another good card to collect in the early game is Hexadragon, three of which modify into a Red Fang, which can be made into Firagas.

To get items for making Flare early, the player would need to grind Triple Triad to collect Ruby Dragon cards, but the player needs 10 cards to make one Inferno Fang to turn into 10 Flare spells. The player can get Inferno Fangs from Ruby Dragons themselves in the forests near Edea's House on Centra world map; though lower level Ruby Dragons do not yield Flares for drawing, they will still give Inferno Fangs that can be refined.

Tiamat card turns into 10 Flare Stones, much faster way than with Ruby Dragon cards, but as a boss card few players use it in their hand.
