Hair ornament enchanted with various powers, worn by women.
Description
The Extension is an add-on in Final Fantasy IX that female party members can equip. It teaches Auto-Potion, which lets the character automatically use a potion on themselves when hit by an enemy; Level Up, which increases EXP gain; and MP+10%. When equipped, the Extension give a bonus to the wearer's Strength, Magic, and Spirit when they level up with the accessory equipped. It strengthens the user's Thunder-elemental damage.
Obtain[]
The Extension is earliest obtained from the Chocobo Hot and Cold minigame, but is so rare that the player may have completed the minigame numerous times over several playthroughs and never come across one. The Extension can be synthesized in Black Mage Village (before entering the Shimmering Island portal), and after returning from the Outer Continent in Alexandria, Treno, Lindblum, and finally Daguerreo. To make it, the player will need 3,500 gil, a Lamia's Tiara, and a Multina Racket; both are sold in Madain Sari.
It is also obtained from the moogles in Gizamaluke's Grotto by giving them a Kupo Nut after the party returns from the Outer Continent.
Mechanics[]
The Extension gives +1 to Defense and Magic Defense, and a +1 bonus to the wearer's Strength and Spirit and +2 bonus to the wearer's Magic stat when they level up with it equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Strength is used for damage calculations and for determining HP growth. Magic is used for calculating spells' outcomes and for MP growth. Spirit is a generally good stat that affects aspects such as the HP a character is revived at, the duration of expirable statuses, how often Regen and Poison tick, how frequently the character enters Trance and how many turns they get while in Trance, among other things.
Using the Extension boosts the character's Thunder damage by +50%, compatible with Dagger's Ramuh and Beatrix's Thunder Slash.
Use[]
The Extension has three good abilities, though no "must have" skills. MP+10% is a nice bonus, Level Up is good for exploration sections, and Auto-Potion is good before Auto-Regen becomes commonplace.
The Thunder-boosting effect is good for Dagger when she summons Ramuh; as summons are so costly, it is a good idea to wear an item that boosts their power to make the MP cost more worthwhile.
The level up bonuses are excellent, but level grinding and min-maxing are unnecessary for a normal playthrough even when preparing for superboss encounters; the player can view any extra stats as simply a nice bonus.
Though Beatrix can also wear the Extension and would even benefit from it for her Thunder Slash, the player should not equip it to her as she is a guest character.
