Lower one foe's defense.
Description
Expose is a Technick in Final Fantasy XII that attempts to lower an enemy's physical defense, making them weak to physical damage, like normal attacks. The player can use it repeatedly on the same enemy. Expose is purchased from a late game shop in the original PlayStation 2 version, and is found in a mid game treasure in the Zodiac versions. In the original version, all player characters who have the License Board can activate it. In the Zodiac versions, it is used by certain jobs and Vossler.
Obtain[]
The license for Expose costs 50 License Points in the Zodiac versions and 35 LP in the original. In the original PlayStation 2 version, Expose is sold in Balfonheim Port Technicks shop for 3800 gil.
In the Zodiac versions, the Technick is found in Lhusu Mines' Site 9, reached after the hunt mark Antlion has been felled; finding the Fallen Bhujerban in the Phon Coast Hunters' Camp northern side finds the Site 11 Key next to him to progress deeper into the mines. The treasure always appears in the far left dead-end of the cave portion of the area.
In the Zodiac versions, Expose can be used by Monk, Foebreaker, and Uhlan, though the latter requires Ultima's license to reach it. Vossler also has it for the brief times he is with the party as a guest.
Mechanics[]
In the original PlayStation 2 version, Expose lowers any enemy's Defense stat by 10% with 33% base accuracy. In the Zodiac versions, Expose reduces any enemy's Defense by 10% plus 1 with 70% base accuracy.
If the user's level exceeds the target's, the chance becomes:
The Technick still rarely works in weak mode in the Zodiac versions where the player is permanently on level 1, suggesting the accuracy cannot drop all the way to 0%.
The effects stacks when used repeatedly, potentially reducing the enemy's defenses to almost nothing, however, as the result is rounded up, the player cannot reduce the enemy's Defense to 0 and the ability will reduce Defense less after every successful use. The effect does not expire and cannot be removed by any means as it is not a status effect but a stat decrease. Expose will miss if an enemy's Defense has been reduced as far as it can go.
The Technick's range is the equipped weapon's range, meaning it can be used on flying targets when the user is equipped with a ranged weapon. Using it on sleeping targets wakes them up.
Use[]
Expose could be useful against any enemy to increase damage against them. As the damage cap was removed for the Zodiac versions, Expose can be even more useful, though some enemies like Yiazmat have damage-reduction augments that are independent of their stats and thus Expose is largely wasted on them. Weapons like guns also bypass the enemy's Defense stat and so do not gain a damage boost from using Expose on the target. Poles, meanwhile, check against the target's Magick Resist stat rather than their Defense, and would do more damage after Shear rather than Expose.
As Vossler has Expose in the Zodiac versions, the player can take on some hunts with him to make use of it, such as Rocktoise. The player can also use it on Demon Wall and Belias. Later on, the Technick can be especially useful against tough hunt marks, like Carrot.
