An Event Music Sequence in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

Event Music Sequence, commonly abbreviated EMS, is a gameplay term in the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy series. It is one of the three types of gameplay alongside Battle Music Sequence and Field Music Sequence.

Gameplay[]

A golden cursor appears and moves along a path that appears before the cursor. Notes appear on this path and the player must tap the screen in time with the cursor lining up with the notes. Missing a note results in damage being taken. The speed of the cursor varies during EMS, and the path is always predetermined, but has no impact on gameplay. With only a few exceptions, equipped abilities and items have no effect on the player's performance in EMS. During EMS, scenes from the game the song is from play in the background. These have no effect on gameplay at all.

The Feature Zone for an EMS always occurs at the end of the stage. The player must hit all silver notes in order to reach the "true" end of the stage, where the song continues and the background scenes shift, usually to scenes from the end of the game. Failure to activate feature zone will result in the song ending prematurely and the player receiving a lesser score. In the case of We Have Arrived from Final Fantasy Type-0, its ending is different in the international versions, due to Type-0 not releasing in the west at the time.

In Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, the Feature Drive mechanic is removed, enabling the player to view the full movie during gameplay regardless of their performance. Gameplay is simplified and now takes place on a single screen, with the Triggers scrolling downwards. In addition, the movie clips (with the exception of Answers and THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY CURTAIN CALL Special Arrange Medley) have been re-edited for each returning song and feature different scenes. In the case of Aerith's Theme from Final Fantasy VII, in-game footage as opposed to FMV scenes are incorporated. The EMS for "Opening" from Final Fantasy Tactics has been entirely re-done, using in-game cutscenes from the original release of the game as opposed to the FMV cutscenes from the War of the Lions re-release. EMS based on games that were close to Curtain Call's release (I.E "The Savior" and We Have Arrived in the west) now have new clips that feature their games respective endings.
