Esuna in Final Fantasy VII.

Light shine strong, our woe begone!

Yuna, Final Fantasy X

Esuna (エスナ, Esuna?, lit. Esna), also known as Heal, and Remedy, is a recurring spell in the Final Fantasy series that removes most abnormal status effects. It can generally erase common ailments like Poison or Blind, which can also be removed by other spells like Poisona and Blindna, as well as less common status ailments that do not necessarily have their own removal spell. In some titles, Esuna has an upgrade called Esunaga. Its item equalavent is often the Remedy.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Final Fantasy II[edit | edit source]

Cures status ailments.

Description

Esuna in Final Fantasy II (NES).

Esuna is a White Magic spell that cures status effects that can otherwise last after battle. As the spell levels up, the more status effects it can cure and the higher the chance of success. At level 1, it can only remove Poison and Darkness. At level 2 the spell can also remove Curse. Esuna will then be able to cure Amnesia (level 3), Toad (level 4), and Stone (level 5). At level 7+, Esuna has the odd ability to remove KO from a target, reviving him/her with 1 HP.

Esuna can be used on multiple targets, but doing so drastically lowers the chance of success unless the spell is on high level. Add one level to the above figures if the spell targets all allies except Darkness, which can still be cured at level 1. Any character can learn Esuna by using the Esuna Tome (Esuna Scroll in Final Fantasy Origins).

Esuna Tome
Effect Allows the target to learn Esuna when used outside of battle. Casts Esuna VIII on all allies when used in battle.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Esuna (エスナ?) comes from the first kana of Eikyū ((エイ)(キュウ)?, lit. Eternal), Sutētasu (ステータス?, lit. Status) and Naoshi ((ナオ)()?, lit. Cure). This suffix succeeds from single ailment healing spells such as Poisona from the original Final Fantasy.

In the Spanish and Italian versions Esuna is called Esna.
