Esuna is a magic spell in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It is the provided by a level 2 Cleansing Materia Cleansing Materia. The spell removes all negative statuses from a target.

Use[]

Esuna costs only 12 MP to cast and can be cast by party members with level 2 cleansing materia. The spell is not entirely inexpensive, but can be vital for removing negative statuses, such as Toad Toad, Petrify Petrify, Sleep Sleep, Silence Silence, and Stop Stop. It can also remove Poison Poison, but this is redundant as Poisona Poisona can do this for much cheaper.

Alternatives to Esuna include items, wearing accessories to resist against statuses being applied in the first place, equipping Warding Materia Warding Materia to prevent them, and casting Resist Resist. It is ideal at the very least that the party member with cleansing materia who will cast Esuna is themselves protected from negative statuses by way of an accessory or a warding materia pairing, but otherwise, these options are often not available, making Esuna very worthwhile.

Pairing Magnify Materia Magnify Materia with cleansing materia allows a user to cast Esuna on all party members at once to heal them. Because magnify is so rare, this is not an ideal use of magnify materia, but in some battles can be necessary. However, when Resist is available, it should instead be used to cast Resist on all first.

Esuna can be handy in battles against Alexander who applies a special negative status effect to the party if they fail to defeat all his light pillars before they detonate.

Etymology[]

Esuna (エスナ?) comes from the first kana of Eikyū ((エイ)(キュウ)?, lit. Eternal), Sutētasu (ステータス?, lit. Status) and Naoshi ((ナオ)()?, lit. Cure). This suffix succeeds from single ailment healing spells such as Poisona from the original Final Fantasy.
