Use[]

Esuna removes the statuses Sleep, Poison, Sadness, Fury, Confusion, Silence, Frog, Small, Slow-numb, Petrify, Berserk, Paralyzed, and Darkness. Many of these effects are extremely detrimental and can affect the outcome of a fight entirely, making Esuna a very good spell to have as a backup. It is a good idea to have the spell ready at the Battle Square.

Against enemies that deal multiple negative status effects, it is good to equip the character that uses the Heal Materia with an accessory that resists Sleep, Silence, Berserk, Frog, or Paralyzed. This is because inflicting these statuses on a character with Esuna prevents them from curing other characters of the same statuses. The safest way to do this is to simply equip them with a Ribbon.

Later in the game, as more characters have access to accessories that resist statuses, or simply have Ribbons, Esuna becomes less of a necessity. The E.Skills White Wind and Angel Whisper also cure all status afflictions as well as heal the target(s). Remedy also cleanses status abnormalities and its use does not take up a Materia slot.

Esuna can be paired with the All Materia to cure multiple allies of negative statuses at once. However, as these statuses are normally only applied to one character at a time, there are better uses of All.

Etymology[]

Esuna (エスナ?) comes from the first kana of Eikyū ((エイ)(キュウ)?, lit. Eternal), Sutētasu (ステータス?, lit. Status) and Naoshi ((ナオ)()?, lit. Cure). This suffix succeeds from single ailment healing spells such as Poisona from the original Final Fantasy.
