Removes various abnormal status effects.
Description
Esuna is a Wht Mag spell in Final Fantasy IX for Eiko, used to cure various status ailments from one target. It does not affect Slow or Stop, where the player counterintuitively needs to use Dispel instead.
Esuna is vulnerable to Reflect and would work with Return Magic were an enemy to use it on the player party, but no enemy does; the enemies that use it on themselves are Kraken, Kraken (Crystal), Maliris, Maliris (Crystal), and Ozma.
Obtained[]
Eiko learns Esuna from Fairy Flute, Siren's Flute, Angel Flute, and Rubber Suit for 80 AP. Beatrix knows it natively.
The earliest the player can get Esuna is from the Fairy Flute stolen from the Hilgigars boss at the end of Conde Petie Mountain Path. It is an exceedingly rare steal, and most players skip it if only to avoid frustration of endless unsuccessful steal attempts. The next chance to learn Esuna is from buying the Fairy Flute from the Oeilvert or Desert Palace Mogshop; however, after Desert Palace, Eiko will be absent from the party until after the events in Mount Gulug.
Mechanics[]
Esuna removes Sleep, Silence, Mini, Poison, Heat, Gradual Petrify, Freeze, Darkness, and Confuse from one target in battle at the cost of 20 MP.
The support ability that affects Esuna is Reflect-Null, which allows Esuna to pierce target's Reflect.
In Eiko's Trance, her Wht Mag becomes Dbl Wht, which lets her use two White Magic spells on her turn; both spells expend MP and Trance gauge separately.
Use[]
Esuna is useful when fighting enemies who use myriad status effects, like Quale, Malboro, or the final boss, as protecting against so many ailments at once would reserve an excess of Magic Stones. Eiko should still be protected against statuses that would disable her magic-use, or she cannot use Esuna.
In Eiko's Trance, she can use Esuna on two party members on her turn, or alongside another spell, e.g. to both cure statuses and restore HP.
Etymology[]
Esuna (エスナ?) comes from the first kana of Eikyū (
