The Esper Elder (長老, Chourou?) is a minor character in Final Fantasy VI. The leader of the Espers, he is one of the oldest and wisest Espers alive, and is implied to be friends with Maduin, the gatekeeper of the Esper World.
Story
The Elder allowed Madeline to remain with her baby daughter Terra when Terra was conceived as the child of Maduin and Madeline. Later, when the Gestahlian Empire invaded the Esper world, the Elder spoke to Maduin about raising a barrier to cast them out. Maduin said that in the Elder's old age, the effort could kill him. Nevertheless, as he was the only Esper able to do so, the Elder cast the spell to seal the gate, saving the Esper world from the Empire for a short while. He presumably died in the effort, as Maduin predicted.
