Enervation materia is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It provides spells that reduce defensive attributes. These spells are Deprotect, which lowers
Defense, and Deshell, which lowers
Magic Defense.
The Warding Materia can be paired with enervation materia to also grant resistance (or, at max level, immunity to) deprotect and deshell. This pairing is identical to
Fortification Materia, which is used to cast spells to apply the reverse defensive statuses.
Obtained[]
Enervation materia is found near the bench in Mt. Corel's Foothills area: it is placed on some rocks around the corner, above the river.
Enervation materia is sold for 2000 gil apiece in shops that sell materia from Cosmo Canyon onward.

Use[]
The enervation materia grants offensive effect spells that reduce enemies' defense and magic defense. When targeting single foes, this can be an effective way of boosting damage of the type that the party deals to them. Enemies do not typically have immunity to the statuses, meaning they are effective in many situations.
Enervation can also be paired with warding materia to grant resistances to deprotect or deshell. This means it competes with fortification materia, which is used to cast the reverse Protect and Shell, for this use case. If a player wishes to protect against these statuses and is choosing which to go in the slot, it will depend on their preferred use case; an offensive use case to weaken an enemy's defenses favors enervation, while cases where players need to play more defensive favor fortification.
Beyond this, enervation materia also competes somewhat with Empowerment Materia, which grants spells that increase physical or magic damage dealt by the target. Targeting party members rather than enemies can in some cases be a more ATB-efficient means of improving a party's damage output if there are multiple foes, or if most damage is being dealt by one party member. As such, the choice will come down to which kind of encounter the player expects, or if the player also needs to pair a materia with warding materia to provide resistance to certain effects.
Aside from warding materia, enervation has a few other Support Materia pairings.
Magnify Materia allows the spells to be cast on all enemies, making it a more ATB-efficient ability; this can be useful, but magnify's pairing for offensive use cases typically goes toward offensive damage dealing spells instead.
Magic Focus Materia can increase the effects' lengths, while
Magic Efficiency Materia can reduce their MP costs, though these are inefficient uses of these materia.
Enervation can be a good materia to bring to the battle against Odin, as deprotect and deshell are some of the statuses he is vulnerable to, and inflicting ailments on him lowers his desire to use Zantetsuken.
