Emerald Carbuncle is an Arcanist and Summoner pet in Final Fantasy XIV. It is called by the Summon ability. Carbuncles are arcane constructs created by the Arcanists' Guild to assist them in their investigations.
Obtained[]
Emerald Carbuncle is obtained automatically upon learning Summon at level 4, and is the default pet called by the ability. Summoners can upgrade Emerald Carbuncle to Garuda-Egi during the level 45 quest Austerities of Wind. Upon completing the quest battle, Garuda-Egi permanently replaces the Emerald Carbuncle for Summoners only. Unlike most other abilities, this change will apply even if the Summoner is level synced below level 45, allowing them to retain the increased action potencies the Egi has over the Carbuncle. The only way for a player to truly summon Emerald Carbuncle again after unlocking Garuda-Egi is to unequip their Soul of the Summoner and revert to Arcanist. The Summoner may also choose to glamour their Egis with the appearance of an Emerald Carbuncle, but this is aesthetic only and it will continue using the Egi's abilities.
Use[]
Emerald Carbuncle specializess in ranged area of effect (AoE) attacks. All of its actions deal damage to the target and nearby enemies, including its auto-attack Gust. In most encounters with 3 or more enemies, Emerald Carbuncle will generally provide the best damage output of the available summons. This makes it well suited to dealing with regular enemies in dungeons. Arcanists also lack access to a single-target focused summon, so Emerald Carbuncle will remain their best option for such encounters. For Summoners, Ifrit-Egi will be their best option against 1 or 2 enemies, such as boss encounters, and once they get access to Egi Assault II will also outperform Emerald Carbuncle in AoE encounters until it is replaced by Garuda-Egi.
Emerald Carbuncle's Egi Assault, Downburst, deals AoE damage with no additional effect.
Its Egi Assault II, Glittering Emerald, deals less damage initially but applies a damage over time (DoT) effect in the target area for greater overall damage. The DoT area is maintained by the Gale Enforcer buff on the Carbuncle; should the buff be removed or the summon be dismissed for any reason, the DoT area will immediately vanish. The Gale Enforcer area is also stationary, and risks losing out on damage ticks should the enemies move out of the area. Only one Gale Enforcer can be active at any time, so it is recommended to use Downburst instead while Gale Enforcer is active.
Summoning abilities are all off the global cooldown (oGCD) with a shared 3s recast, granting Arcanists and Summoners significant freedom in switching their active summons in combat. This can allow them to quickly switch to Emerald Carbuncle during the add phase of a boss encounter to take advantage of its superior AoE damage. They may also wish to temporarily switch to any other summon during AoE encounters to use their Egi Assault II, as Glittering Emerald is significantly weaker than all other options, before quickly switching back to Emerald Carbuncle for its greater overall AoE DPS.
Actions[]
Without the Summoner's input, Emerald Carbuncle will only auto-attack with Gust. In order for Emerald Carbuncle to use its other actions, the player must command it to do so with Egi Assault or Egi Assault II.

Etymology[]
Emerald is a gemstone, and a variety of the mineral beryl colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. It is birthstone for May. Carbuncle was a mythical creature reportedly sighted in the Americas by Spanish conquistadors. It is described as a small creature, either a bird or a mammal, that has a gem in its forehead crystallized from the brain of a dead dragon. According to myth, it is good luck to catch a carbuncle. A carbuncle is also an archaic name given to any red cabochon cut gemstone. The name applied particularly to red garnet.
