Final Fantasy Wiki

Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.

Description

The Emerald is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item, though the player should not do this as Emerald is a limited item. It teaches Haste and MP+10% and White Draw, and is needed for the friendly monsters quest and for synthesis. Eiko can use a Emerald as an add-on to change Carbuncle's summon attack to Emerald Light.

Obtain[]

An Emerald is first obtained in Cleyra by talking to the High Priest when in control of Freya. Another is obtained in the Iifa Tree area on the world map from the Friendly Nymph by giving her three Ores as part of the friendly enemies sidequest. One last Emerald can be bought from Stiltzkin in Oeilvert.

Carbuncle's Emerald Light from Final Fantasy IX Remastered

The Emerald can be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Emeralds x44. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field. However, as the Emerald is a limited item, it is best not used as a consumable other than for the friendly monster who requests it.

When Eiko equips a Emerald as an add-on, Carbuncle's summon ability becomes Emerald Light, which bestows Protect and Haste to the party during the long animation.

Use[]

The Emerald is mainly useful for Eiko's Carbuncle and for completing the friendly monsters quest. Haste as a spell is not too useful, as it expires fast, but White Draw and MP+10% are both worth mastering.

A Emerald can also be used in synthesis to make the Running Shoes, but there are other ways to get a pair, and the Emerald is the second rarest jewel.

As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold, or when Eiko no longer needs Haste from Carbuncle.

Etymology and origin[]

Emerald is a gemstone, and a variety of the mineral beryl colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. It is birthstone for May. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month.
