Elder Drake is an enemy in Final Fantasy X-2. It is one of the few visible enemies found in Via Infinito. It can also be encountered in a random battle from floors 81 - 99. The player can detect there is an Elder Drake in the floor by the roaring and jumping noises they make, but the player can avoid them by running past them.

Battle

The player must not use any magic, including Arcana, because the Drake will attack with Pyroplexy, its breath attack, that will not be absorbed by Fire Eater but can be nullified by a Songstress using Magical Masque. It will use this attack randomly when in its Oversouled state as well as waste turns with Cura, which will only give it a thousand HP. Elder Drakes are in constant Protect status and have high HP and strong physical attacks.

Strategy

The player will probably want to avoid all Elder Drakes until after floor 40, because that is when the player acquires the Cat Nip accessory. With a Cat Nip, one can easily take down Elder Drakes with a Gunner in HP Critical health and using Trigger Happy. This strategy, however, is ineffective in the HD Remaster of the game, since Cat Nip adds Auto-Berserk in this version.

An alternate and safer method is to equip a character with the Berserker dressphere and train her up until she learns the Evade & Counter ability, which allows the respective character to dodge all of the Elder Drake's physical attacks. Learning the Instinct ability Unhinge is also ideal in training a Berserker; using it will lower the Elder Drake's Evade and Accuracy enough to have it almost completely miss each time it attacks, keeping your party mostly safe while equipped with any dressphere.

To keep the Songstress alive to nullify Pyroplexy, the Adamantite accessory is useful. As well as Tetra Master Garment Grid since he is weak against all four elements.

Creature Creator

Fiend Tale

In the Fiend Tale endings, a notable Elder Drake was created from the spirit of a Bevelle chef and kept his refined taste for the best ingredients. He offered to make food for the Gullwings, but his cooking style put them in the red for a month.
