Eiko is a playable character in Final Fantasy IX. She casts Wht Mag and summons eidolons and wields flutes and rackets in battle. She has the most Wht Mag spells and her summons' attacks change depending on what Add-on she has equipped.

Eiko is more of a supportive party member (and thus best-suited for the back row), although she does learn Holy, the ultimate offensive Wht Mag spell. Eiko is likely to be the party leader for Desert Palace, although the player has the option to take her to Oeilvert instead. Eiko has two victory poses, depending on whether she is wielding a flute or a racket. When she equips a flute she will dance happily while playing it. When she equips a racket, she will hug it close and jump into the air.

Support abilities[]

Eiko learns abilities that enhance her skills as a White Mage and Summoner; Boost powers up her eidolons, and Concentrate her magic, and Half MP halves the MP-cost of her spells and eidolons. Eiko is the only character to learn both MP+10% and MP+20%. Eiko is the first of the party to learn Auto-Regen. Her unique ability is Guardian Mog, which heals her from status ailments that usually carry over at the end of the battle.

Wht Mag[]

FFIX Reflect

Eiko casts Reflect, a White Magic spell.

Eiko's stock of White Magic exceeds Dagger's. She can use unique spells like Jewel, which extracts an Ore from an enemy, and Might, which increases a unit's attack power. She is the only main character who can use the powerful Holy spell (a temporary playable character, Beatrix can also use the spell). Curative spells can be used to hurt undead enemies and group-cast by pressing R1 when the cursor is on an ally when targeting the spell.

Eiko's spells:

Eidolons[]

Pearl Light

Eiko bestows the party with Shell with Carbuncle's "Pearl Light", achieved by summoning Carbuncle with Moonstone as Eiko's add-on.

Eiko can summon four eidolons: Fenrir, Phoenix, Carbuncle, and Madeen. Equipping various add-ons allows her to change the eidolons' summon abilities. Fenrir has two attacks, and can be either earth- or wind-elemental, and Carbuncle has various different buffs it can bestow the party with, depending on the jewel Eiko equips (Reflect is default with Ruby Light). With Phoenix, Eiko has a chance of saving the party from annihilation with an auto-summon when the party is defeated, making her a good candidate to take along to face the toughest challenges in the game, such as Yan, Ozma, and the final boss.

If Zidane and Dagger are alive when Eiko summons an eidolon for the first time before they reach Madain Sari, they will exchange a dialogue mid-battle. Zidane will say "Dagger, was that an eidolon?", and Dagger will reply "I think so. Eiko can use magic too?" This resets everyone's turn regardless whether an action has been chosen.

Trance[]

Eiko in Trance.

Eiko's Trance ability is Dbl Wht, allowing her to cast two consecutive White Magic spells in one turn, providing she has MP for both. The spells count as separate actions and will deplete the Trance gauge individually.

Stats[]

Eiko has the lowest physical stats, but her initial stats will be the same as Marcus's when he leaves the party, meaning that if the player bothers to level up Marcus early on, Eiko can potentially get the highest HP and MP of any character. This is known as the Marcus/Eiko stat bug.

Equipment[]

Eiko Carol status menu from FFIX Remastered

Eiko's equipment draw consists of female-exclusive equipment, hats, armlets, light armor, mage robes, flutes, and rackets. When Eiko is equipped with a flute, her spellcasting sound effect is slightly different than the other characters'. As she plays the flute as her spellcasting animation, it appears she uses music to control her magic. She is the only character who can equip all possible add-ons.

Enemy[]

The Epitaphs in Oeilvert summon mirror images of the party line-up as enemies, and so the player may end up fighting a mirror Eiko if they take her there. The mirror does maximum damage to Eiko, but normal damage to everyone else.

Quests[]

Eiko joins the party at the beginning of Conde Petie Mountain Path on the Outer Continent, taking Quina's place in the party lineup as they run on ahead. If she summons before the party reaches Madain Sari, Zidane and Dagger marvel at the feat. Eiko stays with the party from then on and comes to the Mist Continent with the others. When the party splits to go to Oeilvert, Eiko takes priority as party leader in Desert Palace unless she was sent away with Zidane. After the events at Desert Palace, Eiko is away from the party until the end of Mount Gulug, where she rejoins for the rest of the game.

During the time the party splits to tackle all elemental shrines simultaneously, Eiko teams up with Dagger to go to the Water Shrine; however, the segment is not playable. Eiko is also briefly controlled in Bran Bal, looking for Zidane, but there are no battles during this time. If Zidane is not in the party chosen to fight the final boss, Eiko will give the speech before the battle.

Eiko's cooking[]

Dinner-at-Madain-Sari-FFIX

Dinner at Madain Sari.

During the party's first visit to Madain Sari, Eiko prepares a meal of rock-fisted potato stew and barbecued fish. She assigns the tasks of fishing, digging for potatoes, and helping her in the kitchen to three of her moogle friends. While fishing, one of the moogles catches Quina, who had taken the bait instead. Quina offers to help Eiko with her cooking and, depending on the player's choices, the dinner will either be a success or a disaster.

The correct choices for the successful dinner are:

  • Fishing - Chimomo
  • Dig up potatoes - Mocha
  • Help in the kitchen - Momatose
  • Cook enough food for 11 people.
  • The oglop should not go into the food.
  • Eiko should ask for Quina's help.

The better the food is, the longer the dinnertime conversation will be. If the meal turns out excellently, Eiko will explain how summoners communicate with eidolons through their horns.

Jump rope[]

Eiko can play the jump rope minigame in a reconstructed Alexandria if she is in the party and the player visits the chapel. The minigame is identical whether the player uses Eiko or Vivi to play.
