Drive both hands into the ground, causing the land to surge upwards, sending nearby enemies flying.
Description
Earthen Fury is Titan's ultimate Eikonic Ability in Final Fantasy XVI where Clive quakes the very ground itself to damage enemies in his vicinity and send small enemies flying.
Obtained[]
Clive gains access to Titan's powers as part of the story, during "Bolts from the Blue", after fighting a semi-primed Hugo Kupka in the crypt below Rosalith Castle; Kupka himself uses Earthen Fury against Clive in this battle. Earthen Fury can then be learned in the Abilities menu for 1895 AP and equipped to Clive's earth loadout in Abilities & Gear menu. The player can refund the AP and reallocate it at will at any point.
Mechanics[]
When Clive uses Earthen Fury, he drives his hands into the ground to send a surge through the battlefield, damaging all enemies it hits. Small enemies tend to take the most damage as they get launched and receive significantly more hits than enemies that avoid being launched. Medium-sized enemies take two or three hits and do not get knocked back, whereas large enemies again take more hits due to the quake hitting them all around their body. At point blank range, the first hit often misses.
Upgrading the ability increases power and the number of hits. The upgraded ability can do around third more damage, but damage still varies depending on enemy size.
After being used, the ability initially had an especially long cooldown at 135 seconds before being able to be used again. The cooldown has been shortened in version 1.31. Upgrading/mastering the ability has no effect on its cooldown.
AP cost | Effect |
---|---|
1895 (Base) | Able to equip Earthen Fury to Clive's earth loadout. |
2525 (Upgrade) | Increases power and the number of hits. |
4500 (Master) | Able to equip Earthen Fury to any loadout. |
Use[]
If the player is going to use Earthen Fury, it is worth upgrading it to have it deliver significantly more hits, making it more useful even against medium- and large-sized enemies. Its best use remains against groups of small enemies, interrupting them all by launching them and making them vulnerable for follow-up hits. However, Clive has many area attacks he could use against smaller enemies that have shorter cooldowns, such as Flames of Rebirth that should also dispose of all small fry even if its damage is not ranked as high as Earthen Fury's while also restoring some HP to Clive, and is available before Earthen Fury. If the player were to use the AP they were going to use for learning and upgrading Earthen Fury to mastering Flames of Rebirth instead, they could use the latter in the earth loadout, too. Among Clive's ultimates, however, the other Eikons' offerings tend to be more useful for their even shorter cooldowns, especially Gigaflare (Bahamut) and Diamond Dust (Shiva).
Titan also has another ability that is good against groups of enemies, Upheaval, which the player could use instead of Earthen Fury. It has much shorter cooldown, but will deal less damage and needs to be charged for the best results, during which Clive is vulnerable to being interrupted.
During the chronolith trial with Titan, striking multiple enemies with a single Earthen Fury earns a 15 second time bonus.

Final Fantasy XVI (enemy version).
Hugo Kupka uses a version of Earthen Fury when fought in semi-primed state under Rosalith Castle. It moves slowly enough across the floor that the player can evade it by running away from it towards the walls.
Etymology and allusion[]
Earthen Fury (often localized as "Gaia's Wrath") is a recurring summon ability associated especially with Titan. The iteration of the ability in Final Fantasy XVI appears based on Titan's ability from Final Fantasy XIV, another game developed by the same development team within Square Enix, Creative Business Unit III.
