Duty Support is a gameplay feature in Final Fantasy XIV that allows players to run select main scenario duties with a party of allied NPCs, with the ability to revisit these dungeons and level up NPC avatars in the Trust (フェイス, Feisu?, lit. Faith) system.

History[]

The feature was first announced alongside Shadowbringers in the North American Fan Festival 2018 in the form of the Trust System. It was included in the launch of Shadowbringers consisting of a Scenario Mode that was only available during playthroughs of the Main Scenario (either as a first run or via New game Plus) and Avatar mode.

While originally only covering Shadowbringers (and later Endwalker) duties, the system was gradually expanded to include all main scenario dungeons and 4-player trials during Endwalker's patch cycle. Support for duties from the initial release of A Realm Reborn was added in patch 6.1, with the remaining A Realm Reborn duties and the first three Heavenward duties added in patch 6.2. Support for the remaining Heavensward duties was added in patch 6.3, while support for base Stormblood duties was added in patch 6.4. The last update was added in 6.5. In patch 7.1, levelling dungeons not part of the main scenario will start to be included, beginning with Halatali Halatali.

Overview[]

FFXIV Trust System

Interface when swapping party members.

The Duty Support system functions similarly to Adventurer Squadrons, sharing various elements. Players can enter dungeons with their NPC allies as an alternative to using the Duty Finder, useful for bypassing queue times, fighting alongside main scenario allies, and leveling up jobs in a solo player setting. Duty Support NPCs will follow the player, respawning close to them if separated, and the party will automatically return to the entrance if the player is KO'd. Otherwise, healers will Swiftcast raise spells in battle and hardcast outside of battle. Unlike Adventurer Squadrons, there are no player-given orders, and Duty Support NPCs will acknowledge boss mechanics. They are also capable of reviving healers with Phoenix Downs outside of battle, while DPS Duty Support members can use Limit Breaks. As when running a dungeon solo, treasure coffers have fewer rewards that are automatically given to the player, and some enemies won't drop items. Clear rewards are unaffected, and running a duty in this mode will count towards the Challenge Log, Wondrous Tales, and other such criteria, though roulettes are inaccessible.

Duty Support NPCs do not use MP and are immune to many negative status effects, including the standard Vulnerability Up debuff inflicted by failed mechanics in boss fights, as well as Weakness/Brink of Death in the event that they are KO'd and need to be revived. Duty Support NPCs often have access to unique abilities not available to the player; those using base class disciplines will often use renamed versions of abilities available to the promoted job. The AI may also solve mechanics before they are properly communicated to the player. When confronting enemies, Duty Support NPCs will refrain from disengaging until they are all dispatched, though the player may pull additional enemies themselves at the risk of being overwhelmed.

While the AI is able to compensate for any perceived loss of DPS, they are balanced around the expectation that a run will take around 25 minutes, with more time potentially added depending on player KOs and idle time, in comparison to the more standard 15 to 20 minutes a run with a party of respectable players should take.

For trials, the rules for running as a Duty Support are tweaked slightly. The fight is not significantly slower than it would be with a party of players, and the player gets three lives before the fight is reset, reviving automatically without penalty. The amount of times that a player may die before resetting is increased after every reset. These fights are not allowed to be played in Avatar mode.

The Duty Support system becomes available upon unlocking Sastasha Sastasha, while the Trust system becomes available upon completing the main scenario quest Shadowbringers Shadowbringers. Players can enter dungeons using the Duty Support menu, by interacting with the entrance of a Duty Support-compatible dungeon, or (in Shadowbringers content or later) by speaking to NPCs that accompanied them to the entrance. These NPCs will cover all necessary roles for the party composition of one tank, one healer, and two DPS. The NPCs will always be at the minimum level requirement for the dungeon. Upon completing the quest a dungeon is introduced in, it can be run afterwards with a party of NPC avatars using the Trust system.

Note that in all cases, Duty Support is strictly a solo player alternative. It is not possible to form parties with a mix of other players and Duty Support NPCs at the same time.

Overall, Duty Support NPCs can be split into 3 groups:

  • Adventurers: more generic characters created for the new system and older duties. The first four generics introduced by the system are recurring characters throughout all A Realm Reborn duties and some Heavensward dungeons, who, as the story progresses, join the Grand Companies, and eventually the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Some Heavensward and Stormblood dungeons use a mixture of story characters and generics that more specifically suit that part of the story.
  • Avatars: the main focus of the original system. Available for main story duties in Shadowbringers and Endwalker in either Duty Support (formerly Scenario) mode (including running it for the main story, if desired) with restrictions based on the main story, or the Trust system (formerly Avatar mode).
  • Story characters: Other important characters, typically only available for a single duty. As such they are not included in the Trust system and are only available for the initial run, or replaying the respective duty in Duty Support (formerly Scenario Mode), remaining at the same level. This is similar to guests in previous Final Fantasy iterations.

Trust[]

The Trust system is unlocked by completing Shadowbringers Shadowbringers containing all the dungeons from patch 5.0's main scenario, with later dungeons being added after completing the quest that unlocks them. This system allows the player to revisit supported duties with Avatars of Duty Support NPCs. Avatars can be used in all Trust-compatible dungeons regardless of their absence in the main scenario (except for Ryne and Estinien, who are exclusive to Shadowbringers and Endwalker respectively). While Duty Support NPCs are normally at the required level of a duty, the initially available Trust Avatars start at level 71 and must be leveled up to participate in further duties, though Avatars acquired later start at higher levels. Avatars earn a fixed amount of experience for completing a duty, with more EXP awarded if they are below level 80. Upon reaching levels 80, 90, and 100, NPCs can have glamours applied to them depicting previous and unique outfits.

Avatars have unique lines of dialogue in available dungeons at specific points and also respond to certain boss mechanics in different ways befitting their characters, though they are typically less expressive in dungeons that they weren't available for in the initial main story run. They also have some unique interactions between themselves, depending on the party setup.

Leveling all avatars to 80 rewards the achievement Bound by Faith and the title "Trusted Friend", and leveling all avatars to 90 rewards the achievement Bound by Hope and the title "The Seventh Dawn".

All-Rounders[]

Certain characters can perform in multiple roles, granting the player some flexibility in how they arrange their party. Some such characters functionally have multiple classes or jobs for this purpose; for example, G'raha Tia and Venat's "All-Rounder" discipline allows them to fill the role of tank (Paladin), healer (White Mage), or DPS (Black Mage for G'raha Tia, Dancer for Venat). Other characters instead use a single discipline in multiple roles; for example, Haurchefant's Chivalric Knight and Aymeric's Lord Commander disciplines allow them to perform as a tank or a melee DPS, though they use the same pool of Gladiator actions regardless of role.

When adding a character with multiple roles to the party, they will occupy the highest listed party slot they are allowed to; the order is the same as the player's party list sorting. All-rounders will be automatically barred from a role if having them join as that role would make party composition impossible (e.g. if G'raha is the only available tank, and the player themselves is not a tank, then the game will force G'raha to join the party as a Paladin), in this event the barred role icons will disappear from that character's portrait in party selection and the boxes they appeared in will dim.

Some characters available as Trust avatars have access to alternate roles when using the Duty Support option in select duties, either using a different discipline or merely serving a different role with their usual discipline. For example, Urianger Augurelt can perform as either a healer (Astrologian) or a DPS (Summoner), but only during the trial The Mothercrystal The Mothercrystal. These alternate roles cannot be used in Trust Mode.

Supported duties[]

  • Duty Support for A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood features pre-set party members that cannot be switched out. Certain characters are only in the party if the player has a specific role.
  • Duty Support for Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail features the ability to change party members and roles for characters who are All-Rounders. Dungeons in these expansions are also playable with Trust avatars.

  • As a Paladin he is all-around good, effective against any type of encounter and AoE's often through his rotation. Will use Clemency on himself and others at low HP and uses Hallowed Ground in emergencies but otherwise relies on his high defense.
  • Extremely aggressive as a White Mage, AoEs frequently and runs into groups to use Holy and stun them, making him very effective against a large number of enemies but can struggle healing critical HP.
  • As a Black Mage he functions similar to Y'shtola, although G'raha sacrifices AoE damage for high single target damage and will not heal in emergencies. He will rarely use a Limit Break, as most other Scions are more likely to do it first and he defers to the player if they are a DPS.
  • During the Funambulist's Fantasia mechanic in Dohn Mheg, G'raha Tia will run to the start of the rope and stop briefly to unsheathe his weapon ("I regret to disappoint, but I'm more than comfortable with heights!"), then sprint the entire way.
  • During the Frostbite and Seek mechanic in Ktisis Hyperboreia, G'raha will first be shocked by Lyssa's disappearance and confuse it for the "Vanish" spell, but realizes the truth in time to get out of the way ("Is this...Vanish?...No, it couldn't be.") Thancred Archon Archon
Gunbreaker Gunbreaker
Yes Thancred's second portrait.
Thancred's first portrait.
  • For duties prior to Shadowbringers, Thancred uses the Archon job, an All-Rounder discipline capable of serving as a Gladiator Gladiator or Rogue Rogue depending on the required role. From Shadowbringers onward, Thancred uses the Gunbreaker job and can only serve the tank role.
  • As a Gladiator, Thancred does not carry a shield, and thus does not use Shield Bash or Shield Lob in his rotation.
  • As a Gunbreaker, Thancred will not use Cartridge-based skills in Shadowbringers dungeons unless Ryne (and later, Y'shtola or Urianger) is in the party, owing to his inability to charge cartridges on his own. This does not affect his performance significantly, as he uses alternate, but functionally identical, abilities in their place. In Endwalker he can use cartridge-based skills regardless of party setup.
  • Very strong against bosses as he is able to sustain himself with self-healing and shields.
  • Will conserve mitigation buffs, using them against tank busters and when at low HP, however if the player pulls enemies ahead of him, he will use his buffs more frequently and attempt to blind the mobs using Quick Slash, an AoE attack, signaled by ("Are you alright?!").
  • If a party member is injured, Thancred will refrain from using Aurora on himself and instead use it on the party member on low HP, prioritizing the player and then healers.
  • Frequently uses Heart of Light to increase the party's magic defense when an unavoidable enemy AoE is incoming.
  • Uses Superbolide when near death.
  • Focuses more on single target through his rotation, with higher self-sustain and utility compared to G'raha as a Paladin.
  • During the Funambulist's Fantasia mechanic in Dohn Mheg, Thancred expresses mild annoyance ("This wouldn't fool a child.") before running part of the way and leaping across to the boss using Shukuchi Shukuchi ("Good thing I'm light on my feet.").
  • During the Frostbite and Seek mechanic in Ktisis Hyperboreia, Thancred will be unimpressed by Lyssa's ability to use stealth, and quickly notes the footprints in the snow giving away its location before moving to safety. During the second usage, he is mildly impressed that Lyssa tries to confuse the party by wandering in stealth more, but notes that the same problem as before persists.
  • During The Mothercrystal, Thancred acts as main tank while G'raha becomes off-tank. If the player is a tank, Thancred will be the off-tank, supporting the player with stack mechanics and buffs.

Minfilia's portrait.
  • Known as Minfilia in Dohn Mheg and the Qitana Ravel in the main scenario.
  • Ryne is the only avatar with a basic class instead of a job, though this does not make her any less effective in combat than the rest.
  • Has a low priority to use Limit Breaks and prioritizes fight mechanics and her own wellbeing, making her unlikely to use it in time or attempt it again. If the player is a DPS, she will not use Limit Breaks at all.
  • For most encounters Ryne will initially use Vanish, approach the enemy, and use Trick Attack Trick Attack to lower her target's defense.
  • Frequently uses Artful Edge to lower her target's attack.
  • Ryne has access to the unique spell Banish to attack enemies out of her range, as a nod to her Oracle of Light powers in the story.
  • During the Funambulist's Fantasia mechanic in Dohn Mheg, Ryne will nervously pause at the start ("W-We're supposed to cross this?") before tip-toeing through while pausing at certain points ("One step at a time...") and is unable to reach the boss's barrier in time.

  • Lithomancer acts similarly to how Arcanists and Summoners behaved prior to their rework in Endwalker, with a persistent Topaz Carbuncle pet supplementing Urianger's own damage. Urianger is still capable of raising as a Lithomancer and will do so immediately if needed.
  • Will occasionally use Gravity, an AoE damaging spell that also inflicts slow and heavy on enemies, making him effective against a large number of enemies. In Endwalker, Gravity has received a large damage buff and is used more frequently if the party is healthy, making him an effective damage dealer against all encounters.
  • Urianger will, on occasion, cast Death on enemies to instantly defeat them. This does not extend to bosses, and will always target the enemy with the lowest HP. In Endwalker, he no longer uses Death and instead prioritizes using Gravity.
  • Provides damage up buffs to the DPS in the party, generally favoring the player.
  • During the Funambulist's Fantasia mechanic in Dohn Mheg, Urianger expresses mild amusement before teleporting across ("This shan't trouble us.").
  • During the Frostbite and Seek mechanic in Ktisis Hyperboreia, Urianger will immediately realize what is happening and makes no hurry to get to safety, gliding away at the last second knowing he will dodge in time. During the second time he will be unimpressed the boss would repeat its tactics, which causes Urianger to repeat his own method to dodge.

Outside of those duties, Y'shtola can only act as a DPS while using the Sorceress job.
  • Y'shtola will cast offensive magic in set sequences, using visuals from both Thaumaturge/Black Mage and Conjurer/White Mage spells. Periodically in Shadowbringers onward, she will instead use Foul Foul and then cast multiple Fire IV Fire IV spells.
  • Has some minor AoE splash damage through her spell rotation.
  • Uses Cure of the Seventh Dawn to heal any party member at critical HP, albeit at a low frequency. If the entire party is at critical HP or that the healer is dead, she will heal more often. She cannot raise.
  • If a party member dies or if she is at critical HP, she will use Manaward to shield herself, exclaiming ("Don't be so reckless.").
  • If her Manaward shield is broken and she is outside of healing range while at critical HP, she will use Aetherial Manipulation to position herself next to the healer.
  • As a healer, she attempts to strike a balance between healing and damage with high reaction times. If the party is healthy, she will switch to a rotation similar to her DPS behavior and is capable of using Flare for high AoE damage.
  • During the Funambulist's Fantasia mechanic in Dohn Mheg, Y'shtola will simply briskly walk through as if there were no illusion ("An asinine trick.").

Behind the scenes[]

Duty Support was originally known as the Trust system when released in patch 5.0. The Trust system featured a Scenario Mode for when doing the duties as part of the main scenario and an Avatar Mode for when revisiting duties with NPC avatars. The overarching system and its Scenario Mode was renamed to Duty Support in patch 6.1, with the Trust name now applying to the former Avatar Mode.
