Penetrates an enemy's armor to deal severe damage. Use with the Tools command.
Description
Drill is one of Edgar's Tools in Final Fantasy VI. When used with the Tools command, it deals great physical damage to one opponent. Drill is a powerful attack that, once acquired, is among Edgar's best ways to reliably deal considerable damage to one opponent.
Obtained[]
The Drill tool can be purchased in Figaro Castle for 3000 gil after completing the frozen esper battle in Narshe. It can also be stolen from Fortis.
Gogo can also use any Tools abilities also, as long as the tool still exists in the player's inventory and Tools is equipped in Gogo's ability menu.
Mechanics[]
As a physical ability, it deals damage with the following formula:
where "Level" refers to the user's level, and Strength refers to the user's Strength. Drill is unblockable.
Use[]
Drill reliably deals strong physical damage to one target. Against single targets, Drill is Edgar's most turn-efficient ability once acquired, and due to being unblockable, is greater than simple physical attacks. Against multiple targets, Auto Crossbow remains the better choice.
Drill's damage is superseded by Chainsaw, a tool that Edgar acquires later in the game. Chainsaw also has the added bonus of potentially inflicting death and instantly killing enemies. However, used against bosses and enemies immune to instant death, or undead enemies that are healed by instant death, Chainsaw will waste turns. As such, Drill remains the more reliable attack. Sabin's Blitz technique, Meteor Strike, deals comparable damage to Drill; because players will gear Sabin more toward magic damage, however, Drill is the better choice.
While Drill's damage is strong, there are other ways to potentially deal stronger physical damage as Edgar against single targets. For instance, later weapons with an attack power higher than 191, or the Ultima Weapon when Edgar has high HP will, deal more damage than Drill (although used this way, they can be blocked). Combining this with relics, such as the Genji Glove and/or Master's Scroll, can deal significantly more physical damage than simply using Drill. However, this option is available to other characters (such as Terra, Locke, or Celes), and may be better used on them. Edgar is one of only two characters who can wield spears, meaning he can use the Dragoon Boots and Genji Glove to both deal greater damage than Chainsaw and avoiding damage from enemies, if players choose this setup.
Since Edgar's most powerful Tools abilities are physical attacks, the player should prioritize magicite that boost his Strength when leveling up his stats. If this is done, though Drill's built-in attack power cannot be increased, between boosts to Edgar's Strength and level, the ability will still continue to scale in damage output, but will still fall short of Chainsaw or weapons with a higher attack power.
Due to Gogo's naturally lower Strength stat, Gogo benefits more from using the magic-based Tools than Drill, and should use Bioblaster or Flash instead.
