Steel boots made for dragoons. Changes the Attack command to Jump.

Description

Dragoon Boots, also known as DragoonBoots[1][2] is a relic in Final Fantasy VI. It changes the basic Attack command to the Jump command, which causes a user to leap into the air, hidden from battle until landing, dealing 150% damage (double with a spears). This makes it most useful for Edgar and Mog, who can equip spears natively, though Merit Award allows other party members to also make use of them.

Though Gau can equip Dragoon Boots, he cannot use the Jump command in his battle menu, making this a wasted equip.

Obtained[]

Dragoon Boots can be found Magitek Research Facility. More commonly, they can later be bought at Thamasa or Tzen for 9,000 gil, and stolen from Harvester, Wyvern, or Platinum Dragon.

Use[]

Dragoon Boots provides no passive bonuses, but the Jump command can be beneficial for Edgar and Mog. Using Jump with a spear equipped is just as turn-efficient as a normal Attack, but the main benefit from Jump is being able to avoid damage for its duration before landing, allowing the party member to become more survivable and dodge a number of powerful enemy attacks, or even the player's Meltdown.

Because Jump enables the user to avoid damage, there is less pressure to also equip a defensive relic to pair with Dragoon Boots. Merit Award should used with any party member who cannot equip spears natively, but whose physical damage with Jump would be strong (such as Sabin). Mog and Edgar can benefit from using Hyper Wrist, Gigas Glove, or Hero's Ring to boost Jump's damage. When Dragon Horn is available, it significantly increases Jump's turn-efficiency by causing Jump attacks to hit 2-4 times across random enemies; even with two hits, this is greater than a normal attack, while four hits gives it great damage output potential (below only Master's Scroll).

Edgar and Mog benefit hugely from Dragoon Boots. In both cases, it does not detract from their native command ability (Tools for Edgar, Dance for Mog), and may be more reliable and useful outside of certain situations. Both should also use Dragon Horn once available. For other characters, the value of pairing Dragoon Boots with Merit Award is still beneficial, but is less of a clear choice as they will not reach Edgar or Mog's potential, and have other ways to achieve greater damage potential (for instance, Terra and Celes can pair Celestriad and Soul of Thamasa to deal immense magic damage, while both of them and Locke can alternatively pair Master's Scroll with Genji Glove for immense physical damage).

Dragoon Boots synergizes well with imp equipment, the most powerful equipment in the game. This equipment set grants characters maxed-out defenses and attack power when under the imp status, in turn restricting their ability to use magic or special commands. Since the character under imp can only use the Attack command, and the weapon of the imp equipment—the Impartisan—is a spear, an imp equipment build synergizes perfectly with the Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn, allowing the characters to still deal great damage with Jump. Imp equipment is universal, meaning character is viable for this strategy, though it is of circumstantial use.

Etymology[]

In the Final Fantasy series, the Dragoon job is associated with the Jump command.
