Deals lethal damage to dragons.

Description

Dragon Killer is a support ability in Final Fantasy IX for Freya, allowing her to increase the power of her Attack toward dragon enemies. It costs 3 Magic Stones to equip. It is the only Killer ability that only one party member learns.

Killer abilities in Final Fantasy IX are reminiscent of weapons in the Nintendo-era Final Fantasy games that dealt more damage to specific types of enemies.

Obtained[]

Dragon Killer is learned from Javelin and Barbut for 70 AP. Equipping both at the same time masters the ability at double the pace.

Freya starts with Javelin and Barbut can be bought from Burmecia's Mogshop.

Mechanics[]

With Dragon Killer active, Freya's Attack deals 150% normal damage to dragon enemies,. It does not stack with other Killer abilities if the enemy belongs to more than one category, but does stack with MP Attack and Elem-Atk gear, and the attack can still critical. Dragon Killer affects any use of Attack command against dragon enemies: via Attack, Charge!, or Counter. It does not affect damage from any other move besides the basic Attack command.

Use[]

Grand Dragon.

Freya has Dragon Killer since the start and it is good to keep it equipped if the player wanders the world map near Lindblum and Chocobo's Forest soon after Freya joins, against the local Serpions and Ironites. There are also numerous bosses in the dragon class.

Killing 100 dragon-type enemies maxes out Freya's Dragon's Crest, so the player may want to farm these enemies even in an otherwise casual playthrough, as 100 slays does not take too long when fighting the Serpions and Ironites on the bottom of the Mist Continent near the Qu's Marsh and Chocobo's Forest. The strong Grand Dragon can also be encountered early, as it is the only enemy on the Popos Heights grassland terrain, accessible from Gizamaluke's Grotto. However, these enemies are best defeated with Quina's LV5 Death or Limit Glove, as Freya does not need to be involved in the dragons' killing to power up her move.

After the events in Burmecia, Freya will not need Dragon Killer for the events in Cleyra and Alexandria, and later on will not rejoin until after the party has the Blue Narciss. From here on dragon enemies appear sporadically, so other Killer abilities are more useful most of the time, Bird Killer especially. However, Dragon Killer is Freya's niche and so if the player will be going against this enemy type, she is a natural choice; equipping it means Freya should be moved to the front row and use her Attack over her Jump.
