Disempowerment materia is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It provides spells that reduce offensive attributes. These spells are Debrave, which reduces
Attack Power (thus reducing physical damage), and Defaith, which reduces
Magic Attack (reducing magic damage).
The Warding Materia can be paired with disempowerment materia to also grant resistance (or, at max level, immunity to) debrave and defaith. This pairing is identical to
Empowerment Materia, which is used to cast spells that apply the reverse supportive statuses.
Obtained[]
Disempowerment materia is sold in shops that sell materia for 2000 gil apiece from Gongaga onward.
Scoring an A rank for "Two Legs? Nothin' To It" for the piano earns a disempowerment materia from Dorian. "Two Legs? Nothin' To It" is found on the piano at the Cosmo Canyon inn.

Use[]
The disempowerment materia grants offensive spells that reduce physical or magic damage of an opponent. This can be a good way to reduce the threat that an opponent poses. The spells are relatively expensive to cast, but are multiplicative with any defensive attributes the player has.
Disempowerment materia can also be paired with warding materia to grant resistances to debrave and defaith. This means it competes with empowerment materia, which can cast the reverse Bravery and Faith spells. If a player wishes to protect against these statuses and is choosing which to go in the slot, it will depend on their preferred use case; a supportive use case to boost the party's damage output favors empowerment, while defensive cases where players need to reduce an enemy's damage output favor disempowerment.
Beyond this, disempowerment materia also competes somewhat with both Barrier Materia and
Fortification Materia, which improve the party's resistance to attacks. Against single enemies or bosses, there is a case to be made to reduce their damage output rather than need to apply resistance to the entire party. However, for multiple foes, applying resistance is normally the better bet.
Aside from warding materia, disempowerment has a few other Support Materia pairings.
Magnify Materia allows the spells to be cast on all enemies to cut their damage output; this can be useful, but there are often better pairings for the materia.
Magic Focus Materia can increase the effects' lengths, while
Magic Efficiency Materia can reduce their MP costs, though these are inefficient uses of these materia.
