Vaan hunting rats

The Dire Rat is beast/rat-type enemy in Final Fantasy XII. They are the first enemies fought by Vaan, who seems to have a passion for hunting them down. Possibly the weakest enemy, they are later encountered in the Garamsythe Waterway. They can drop some useful items, including the rare Rat Tail and the Leather Shield. Six Dire Rats are fought in the first stage of Zodiac versions' Trial Mode.

Page 1: Observations

Being a manner of vile and verminous beastie, much favoring the fetid stench of the sewers and making their nest therein. Past attempts at eradications to contain the plagues these pests are known to carry have greatly reduced their numbers, yet a preternatural rate of reproduction has kept the strain from extinction. And so they remain, an ever-popular subject for natural philosophers keen to fathom the secrets of their indomitable constitution.

The rat tail: a cheap reagent for all your potion-crafting needs. And that's not all: some aficionados say they're quite tasty fried with a little cactus butter! The large volume disappearing from merchant's stalls would seem to confirm their popularity. Rumor has it that, which the right spices, the flavor can only be described as 'transcendent.' I, for one, am not so sure I'm quite ready to transcend.

Etymology

A wererat is a therianthropic creature in the shape of a rat. The term is a neologism coined in analogy to werewolf, used in the fantasy or horror genre since the 1970s. The concept has since become common in role playing games and fantasy fiction inspired by them. Were-rats are commonly portrayed as sewer-dwelling scavengers and opportunistic thieves.

A dire rat is a fictional animal from the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. It is one of the more common dire creatures, which are all larger, tougher, meaner versions of regular animals.
