Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.

Description

The Diamond is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item, though the player should not do this as Diamond is a limited item. It teaches Body Temp and Distract and is needed for the friendly monsters quest and for synthesis. Eiko can use a Diamond as an Add-on to change Carbuncle's summon attack to Diamond Light. Though the Gimme Cat monster asks for a Diamond, the player must not give it one.

Obtain[]

Diamond in the boat in Conde Petie from FFIX Remastered

Diamond found in Conde Petie.

A Diamond is first found in Conde Petie's kirk boat. Conde Petie becomes inaccessible later so the player should make sure to get it at the earliest. Later on, a Diamond is found in the Sea at Dusk chocograph treasure ChocographLoc17, available to dig up at Chocobo's Lagoon when Choco is dark blue.

The Diamond is acquired from the friendly monsters quest by giving Friendly Garuda a Lapis Lazuli. The Diamond is then given to the Friendly Yan to complete the friendly monsters quest. The player can get spoils from the Yan by defeating it instead, but if the player never gives it a Diamond, Ozma will remain out of reach and will absorb Shadow.

One more Diamond is bought from Stiltzkin in Bran Bal.

Mechanics[]

Carbuncle's_Diamond_Light_from_Final_Fantasy_IX_Remastered

Carbuncle's Diamond Light from Final Fantasy IX Remastered

The Diamond can be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Diamonds x36. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field. However, as the Diamond is a limited item, it is best not used as a consumable other than on the Friendly Yan who requests it.

If the player uses it on the Gimme Cat, they will get nothing in return.

When Eiko equips a Diamond as an add-on, Carbuncle's summon ability becomes Diamond Light, which bestows Protect and Vanish to the party during the long animation.

Use[]

The Diamond is mainly useful for Eiko's Carbuncle and for completing the friendly monsters quest. Body Temp and Distract are both good abilities to also master, but the party can get them from gear that also give some stats.

A Diamond can also be used in synthesis to make a Rebirth Ring, but there are other ways to get one.

As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold, or when Eiko no longer needs Vanish from Carbuncle.

Etymology and origin[]

In mineralogy, diamond is a metastable allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is the birthstone for April. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month.
