Dhorme Chimera, also known as Quadrharpy, is an enemy in Final Fantasy V. It is one of the more powerful enemies in Bartz's world, found in a patch of desert north of the Library of the Ancients. It also can be found in the merged world's Walse Tower, underwater, and when summoned by Zephyrus; the summoned one does not count for the bestiary[note 1].

Battle[]

Dhorme Chimera has a high chance of ambushing the player and will cast Aqua Breath at the start of the battle, as well as hitting with critical attacks. It is worth the challenge to fight it so that Blue Mages can learn the powerful Blue Magic spell, Aqua Breath.

Strategy[]

Dhorme Chimera is susceptible to slow. A Time Mage can slow it down to increase the party's chances of survival. Control also works.

In the first world, is recommendable to have a Ninja in the group to use Throw; the best item is a Shuriken, because it will cause enough damage to take it down in one hit. The same strategy can be used in the third world. Buying a Flame, Ice, or Thunder Rod from Karnak and using one in battle as an item will also kill it in one hit.

Etymology[]

The chimera is a fire-breathing monster, one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It is commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail in Greek mythology. In modern usage, the term chimera is often taken to mean any sort of hybrid between two or more species.

The enemy's name in the PlayStation release is intended to be "Quadraharpy". The Jackanapes was named "Harpy" in the same release, and also shares its role as a particularly dangerous enemy for when it can be first encountered. "Quadra" refers to it having four times as many heads as the regular Harpy.

In Greek and Roman mythology, a harpy was a female monster in the form of a bird with a human face. They steal food from their victims while they are eating and carry evildoers (especially those who have killed their family) to the Erinyes. They seem originally to have been wind spirits. Their name means "snatchers".

Notes[]

  1. Super Famicom and PlayStation versions lack bestiaries
