Dr. Dhamini Oranye is a character in Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. She is a doctor in the Sector 8 slums of Midgar, having a clinic which she runs with her son, Rakesh Oranye. Dhamini was crucial in Tifa Lockhart's recovery after the Nibelheim Incident.
History[]
Dr. Oranye previously lived topside on Sector 8, before bad luck led her to the slums. She raised her child Rakesh in the slums.[1] The man she fathered Rakesh with was also a doctor and medical researcher for the Shinra Electric Power Company who taught physical rehabilitation techniques, but was a biologist in training, but later specialized in observing and cataloging musculature of specimens in the company's labs to become editor-in-chief for a monster encyclopedia, before being killed by a research specimen.[2]
At some point, Rakesh gambled Dr. Oranye's money on chocobo races. This put him heavily in debt to Mr. Manson, forcing Dr. Oranye to greatly overcharge patients in order to help pay off the debt.[3]
After the Nibelheim Incident in October 1, 0002, Tifa suffered severe laceration from Sephiroth's sword, leaving a wound stretching from her left upper chest to below her right breast. The wound reached bone and shattered a portion of her sternum, but did not harm her organs or puncture any lungs. Rashard Zangan took Tifa first to Dr. Sheiran in Corel for surgery,[4] before transferring her to Dr. Oranye's clinic for recovery, chosing her as Rakesh was one of his students, and because Tifa's other option was the Shinra Building.[2]
Dr. Sheiran's surgery reinforced the damage portion with artificial bone and short metal wire, while Dr. Oranye kept Tifa in a chest brace to keep her stable and helped with skin grafts. Tifa's youth meant that Dr. Oranye estimated the grafts, which would typically take three-four years to blend in, would instead blend in much faster, and that Tifa would live a normal, healthy life. Dr. Oranye filled Tifa in on the details when she awoke in November.[4]
Dr. Oranye gave Tifa three conditions on which she could leave: that the doctor was sure the grafts were taken care of, that Tifa was rehabilitated enough to go about daily tasks on her own, and that Tifa had a plan to pay the doctor off.[5] However, Dr. Oranye charged Tifa three times of what the actual procedure cost.[3] Furthermore, in performing the procedure, Dr. Oranye took photos of Tifa's bare chest for case studies for the medical community, without consent, also showing it to other prospective patients; though Tifa's face was out of frame, she found it unsettling.[6] When Tifa said that it was Sephiroth of SOLDIER who had caused her injury, Dr. Oranye asked Tifa to promise not to talk about it while at her clinic, so as to prevent her practice being caught up in trouble with Shinra.[7]
Tifa was eventually discharged December 4 of that year.[8]
Tifa continued to return to the clinic for monthly checkups. On May 0003, the Wednesday of the week after Tifa's sixteenth birthday, Dhamini noted that most grafts were looking better aside from one, and pondered whether the metal wire should be remove. Around this time, Marle came to Dr. Oranye's clinic, resisting the doctor's procedure until Tifa gave her reassurances.[6]
When Jessie Rasberry came to Tifa after an injury, Tifa claimed to have stumbled and slammed her torso into a large, dull object, in the hopes that Dr. Oranye would prescribe a drug. Dr. Oranye saw through Tifa's story and urged her to bring in the real patient, though she did prescribe an analgesic as a potent painkiller while urging to only use it if the pain was overwhelming and there was a sign of internal bleeding. However, Jessie left Tifa's apartment before Tifa could bring Jessie in.[9]
Just before fully paying down her debt, Tifa discovered that Dr. Oranye had overcharged her when she and Barret Wallace walked in on Mr. Manson come to the clinic to collect his debt, after Rakesh had stolen Tifa's savings to try and pay it down. After Tifa confronted the two and knocked Rakesh to the floor, she hastily agreed to forgive Tifa's remaining debt and apologized.[3]
Characteristics[]
Dr. Oranye was described as a "heavyset doctor in a white coat" with "lovely warm brown" skin and having a "soft, gentle voice".[4] Among the clothes she kept for her patients were a nondescript, baggy blouse and skirt of middling length, an outfit Tifa said was not to her taste.[10]
Dr. Oranye was kinda to Tifa when she awoke, comforting her as best she could.[4] Though she saw through Tifa's story aimed at getting medicine for Jessie, she listened intently and still offered to help.[9] Although she practiced unethically by taking medical photos without consent[6] and overcharging patients, she was highly apologetic for overcharging, and regretted doing so.[3]
Dr. Oranye was able to access the latest medical technology in terms of drugs and equipment.[7]
