Armor made in the dark world.
Description
The Demon's Mail is a mid game heavy body armor in Final Fantasy IX for Steiner and Freya. It teaches High Tide, which allows the character to enter Trance more often. It absorbs Shadow damage and strengthens the user's Shadow attacks. It is a good armor for the battle against Ozma for its Shadow-absorption.
Obtain[]
The Demon's Mail is found the earliest by stealing it from Tantarian, and the earliest Tantarian can be fought is during the time the party is in Alexandria Castle under a time limit. It would be very difficult, however, as Zidane cannot have Master Thief for Tantarian to improve his steal odds and it will be available via other means later on (also, Freya and Steiner will not be in the party for a long while after the Alexandria Castle segment and so it is pointless to get it early on, anyway). The next chances to get the Demon's Mail are from the chocograph Forgotten Plains when the party is taken to the Forgotten Continent and the player has progressed in the Chocobo Hot and Cold quest to the point Choco can traverse mountains.
The Demon's Mail is next found in Mount Gulug . Afterward, it is bought for 5,900 gil from Daguerreo and Ipsen's Castle. Daguerreo stops stocking it after the player enters the Shimmering Island portal.
Mechanics[]
The Demon's Mail has 27 Defense, mitigating damage from physical attacks. It absorbs Shadow damage to the wearer; if Freya also wears a Dragon Wrist or either character wears a Protect Ring, they will absorb half damage. Wearing a Demon's Mail strengthens the character's Shadow damage by +50%, compatible with Steiner's Darkside and Doomsday Sword. Freya has no Shadow abilities to take advantage of this trait.
Use[]
The Demon's Mail is the best heavy armor piece for world map exploration on the Blue Narciss, Oeilvert, Desert Palace, and Mount Gulug until the superior Diamond Armor can be purchased from Daguerreo.
High Tide from the Demon's Mail is not among the most useful abilities, but the player can equip it if they have the Magic Stones to spare. It can couple well with Cover.
The Shadow-protection is good against the superbosses Ozma and Hades and whenever Vivi uses Doomsday. The Shadow Elem-Atk is good for Steiner and stacks against an enemy's weakness to Shadow; he can easily do supreme damage with Darkside and Doomsday Sword with it.
Beatrix can also wear the Demon's Mail, but the player should not equip it to her as she will leave the party with whatever she has on.
