Dark Shiva is an optional boss in the International, PAL, and HD Remaster versions of Final Fantasy X. She guards the entrance to Macalania Temple if the party returns there after defeating Seymour Natus. Following the battle, Tidus is chased by Guado Guardians, who run faster than him, spawn infinitely and fight if they catch him, exactly like when Seymour was first fought. Leaving the area stops their spawning.

Dark Shiva must be defeated to acquire Anima, in the event that the player did not obtain the treasure chest in the temple earlier.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Dark Shiva has extremely high Agility and all her attacks, except Diamond Dust, have low ranks, meaning she attacks more often. Her Heavenly Strike causes Instant Death, as well as Berserk and Confuse. Though Dark Shiva does not counterattack, her standard physical attack removes several beneficial status effects: Auto-Life, Haste, NulAll, Protect, Reflect, Regen and Shell.

Dark Shiva has relatively low HP for a Dark Aeon. Her Overdrive, Diamond Dust, deals non-elemental damage in the range of 79,802 to 90,110 and cannot be reduced by anything but another aeon's Shield. Her Overdrive gauge increases by 10% when using an attack or when targeted by an ability.

Strategy[]

Auto-Haste and Quick Hits are useful. Auto-Phoenix preferably for two party members also works well. Because of her low HP, Dark Shiva can be defeated quickly before she uses her Overdrive. A good method is to use Wakka's Attack Reels while equipped with a Break Damage Limit weapon. As in the other Dark Aeon battles, high Agility, Accuracy, Strength, and Defense are helpful.

As with any other enemy, Dark Shiva can be killed instantly by Yojimbo's Zanmato attack. This is the recommended strategy for players if the party’s attributes are not high enough and can be used to retrieve the Macalania Temple Destruction Sphere needed to obtain the aeon Anima. But this will likely take multiple attempts since the odds of Yojimbo using Zanmato is low, even when his compatibility with Yuna is high.

Etymology[]

Shiva (also spelled Śiva) is a Hindu god. The Hindu Shiva once saved the world by consuming poison, giving him blue skin around the area of the neck and throat. Shiva is a male god, but can merge with his consort Parvati to become Ardhanari, an androgynous Hindu god of duality. Shiva is the god of destruction along with Vishnu, who is the god of preservation, and Brahma, the god of creation. Together they are the three principle deities of the Trimurti (Hindu Triad). It is believed he periodically destroys the world, then recreates it.

Shiva has different human forms, males and females. When he was in his avatar form, he spent most of his times in the Himalayan snow mountain. Shiva in the Final Fantasy series is likely inspired by one of his female avatars.

The Japanese pronunciation "Shiba" could refer to the English word "shiver", which in Japanese would sound like "shi-ba" or "shi-va".
