The Dark Dragon (ダークドラゴン, Dākudoragon?), also known as the Dark Elf or Dark D., is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy IV. As its name suggests, it is a dragon associated with the Dark element.
Appearances[]
Final Fantasy IV[]
The Dark Dragon, also known as the Dark Elf or Dark D., appears as a boss encountered in the Lodestone Cavern. It is the second form of the Dark Elf. While the Dark Dragon is a dangerous foe with a deadly Dark Breath, it has very low HP compared to the Dark Elf's prior form and can be quickly defeated.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]
The Dark Dragon returns as a boss encountered in the Lodestone Cavern during Palom's Tale, once more being the second form of the Dark Elf. The encounter is scripted to end after a couple turns, though there is still chance to receive a game over before the encounter ends. After a few rounds, it will be defeated by Shiva.
Final Fantasy VII[]
The Dark Dragon appears as an enemy encountered in the Northern Cave. It uses strong physical attacks—Claw and Tail Attack—which it may use twice in one turn. It's Dark Dragon Breath may inflict Darkness on all party members. Most dangerously, it may cast Ultima, which it uses as a counter-attack against magical attacks once per battle.
When manipulated, the player may learn the enemy skills Dragon Force and Laser from it. It is recommended to manipulate them or inflict Sleep, then cast spells such as Laser on it to inflict damage quickly.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The Dark Dragon appears as a boss encountered alongside the Seeker in Waughroon Shrine during the missions "Journey Abroad" or "The Three Kingdoms" if the player chooses to visit the Republic of Bastok last. Defeating it grants the "Dark Dragon Slayer" title.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
The Dark Dragon appears as a powerful enemy encountered in The Palace of the Dead (Floors 91-100). It can bombard any player characters it can see with its long-ranged Dark Thorn AoE even if it isn't directly engaged in combat, making it a priority target.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions[]
The Dark Dragon appears as an optional boss exclusive to the War of the Lions releases. It is the second form of Celebrant Bremondt, acting as the conclusion of Beowulf Cadmus's sidequest. It has access to all three dragon breath abilities.
