Dark Bahamut, also known as Wyvern, is a boss in Final Fantasy IV. It guards the Ragnarok, Cecil's strongest weapon in the original release.

Battle[]

Dark Bahamut begins the battle with Megaflare, and then casts Reflect on itself and bounces Flare spells onto the party. Flare is typically not fatal, and it is possible to survive Megaflare as well. Dark Bahamut counters summoning with another Megaflare, limiting Rydia's potential, although she can still summon Bahamut to pierce Reflect.

Strategy[]

After Dark Bahamut uses its first Megaflare, the player should revive all KO'd characters with Phoenix Downs while Rosa casts Curaja. Rydia should summon Asura. This way the party stays alive and benefits from the Protect status. Rydia can also use the Quake spell to deal damage ignoring Dark Bahamut's Reflect. Cecil should attack, Kain should use the Jump command and Edge should throw Shuriken.

Behind the scenes[]

In the Super NES, Game Boy Advance, and Pixel Remaster releases of Final Fantasy IV, Dark Bahamut uses the "attacking" sprite of its base Bahamut sprite, but in the Playstation Portable release it uses the "passive' sprite. In all versions of the game, Dark Bahamut's sprite does not change during battle as Bahamut's does.

Etymology[]

Bahamut (Arabic بهموت Bahamūt) originated as an enormous whale in ancient pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. Upon Bahamut's back stands a bull with four thousand eyes, ears, noses, mouths, tongues and feet called Kujuta (also spelled "Kuyutha") (compared with the pair of Behemoth and Leviathan). Between each of these is a distance of a 500-year journey. On the back of Kujuta is a mountain of ruby. Atop this mountain is an angel who carries six hells, earth, and seven heavens on its shoulders.

Another version of the Arabic story is that Bahamut is indeed a dragon and he stands on a whale called Liwash.

In modern times, the game Dungeons & Dragons is responsible for reimagining Bahamut as the king of dragons, a benevolent Platinum Dragon; the opposite of the malevolent Tiamat, the five-headed Chromatic Queen of Dragons.

It has also been known by another name: wyvern. A wyvern is a medieval European mythological winged creature with a dragon's head, reptilian body, two legs (sometimes none), and a barbed tail. They appear in many crests of Europe's ancient families, symbolizing strength. The word wyvern comes from wivere, which means serpent.
