Daisuke Watanabe.
Born on March 11, 1974, in Yokohama, Daisuke Watanabe is a scenario writer for Square Enix. Along with another renown scenario writer, Kazushige Nojima, he has written the scenario for Final Fantasy X-2.
Profile
Watanabe's first work in the Final Fantasy series was on Final Fantasy X. He was assisted by other staff members while creating the game's scenario. While not being initially part of the development of Final Fantasy XII, he finished the game's script when Yasumi Matsuno left Square Enix. When Daisuke Watanabe joined the project, he was asked to add more depth to the script while maintaining Matsuno's writing style.
Watanabe was told that the story of the game was supposed to be a drama between nobles viewed through the eyes of a commoner. Because of this, Watanabe focused on giving aristocratic characters more development, this being the case of Ashe and the Judges. Watanabe intentionally gave Vaan little character development and story focus because he wanted the player to see the world through Vaan's eyes, like a shell the player would use to emerge themselves in the game's world. Thus, Vaan is supposed to represent the player.
Regarding Final Fantasy XIII, Watanabe received a lot of directions from Motomu Toriyama. Because Toriyama had a very precise idea of what he wanted for the game, Watanabe had to rewrite parts of the script numerous times. Watanabe has stated that his work on Final Fantasy XIII was his biggest challenge while working at Square Enix.
