Restores a lot of HP of single/multiple targets.

Description

Cura is a Wht Mag spell in Final Fantasy IX for Dagger, Eiko, and Beatrix. It is the second tier curative spell used to restore one or all allies' HP, or for damaging undead enemies, above Cure and beneath Curaga. Cura is affected by Reflect and would work with Return Magic were enemies to use it on the player party.

It is also an enemy ability used by Beatrix (third battle) and Lamia.

Obtained[]

Cura is learned from Healing Rod, Golem's Flute, and Barette. Eiko already starts with the Golem's Flute, and Beatrix knows Cura natively. Dagger can learn it from the Healing Rod found in the Iifa Tree. Barette is also a very rare find in the Chocobo Hot and Cold, and can be synthesized in Lindblum before heading to the Outer Continent for a Needle Fork and a Barbut, both available to buy from Burmecia.

Mechanics[]

The amount Cura heals is affected by the user's Magic stat and Level. It ignores the target's Magic Defense, useful when using the spell to attack undead enemies.

The amount Cura replenishes HP is calculated as follows:

Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.

The Bonus gains a 50% increase when Concentrate is equipped, and is halved by the target's Shell, the user being under Mini, and multi-targeting the spell.

The support abilities that affect Cura are Concentrate for increasing the amount Cura heals, and Reflect-Null, which allows Cura to pierce target's Reflect.

In Eiko's Trance, Wht Mag turns into Dbl Wht where Eiko can cast two spells on her turn. The spells cost MP and expend the Trance gauge independently.

Use[]

Cura is a good utility spell for replenishing the player party's health in battle, though using Cure and Potions picked up as battle spoils when outside of combat may be more MP-efficient. If the healers have Concentrate equipped, their spells' heal for more.

Cura can also be used to attack undead enemies, useful for the portion of the game where Zidane, Vivi, Dagger, and Eiko head to the Iifa Tree; even with a party of two healers, this area has many undead enemies where Dagger and Eiko can use their healing magic to damage them. Even the boss of this segment is an undead.

After the party learns Auto-Regen, the need to heal during battle diminishes dramatically, and Dagger and Eiko can instead use their turns for summoning eidolons and using other support spells, like Might.
