The Cur Nakk, also known as Karnak, is an enemy in Final Fantasy V. They are only fought while escaping from Karnak Castle, and are of no threat to the party and can be quickly defeated with physical attacks. They commonly appear in the monster-in-a-box chests at the castle.

When left alone, they will flee. They are also fought during the battle with Iron Claw while in its Soldier form, and are no different than the ones fought during the escape minus the 25 MP and their resistance to Lightning and Holy-elemental attacks. If the player leaves at least one Cur Nakk alive and defeats Iron Claw while it is in Soldier form, they will never have to fight Iron Claw's true form after defeating the last Cur Nakk.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

This enemy's name in Japanese is identical to the region where it is found, Karnak. Its name may be a play on 狩る (karu?) meaning "to hunt", particularly of animals or criminals, which contrasts with its untamed counterpart. The second part of its name may derive from the Thai word สุนัข (sù-nák) referring to a dog or other canine.

The term cur refers to the lowest class of nameless dog or pariah dog, generally a mixed-breed dog.
