The Crystarium System (クリスタリウム, Kurisutariumu) is the ability and statistics system for Final Fantasy XIII. Each character has a unique Crystarium similar to the Sphere Grid of Final Fantasy X, although systems do not intersect. The Crystarium is fueled by Crystogen Points (known as Crystal Points in the Japanese version), or CP, which are won after every battle, and are spent to unlock nodes on the Crystarium. Each character's Crystarium is based around their Eidolon crystal and branch out in separate planes defined by the six different Roles.
Profile
Crystarium Level
Each character's Crystarium growth level corresponds to the progress of the game's story. After fighting certain Bosses, the Crystarium levels up, enabling players to advance through the layout and possibly upgrade their stats and learn new abilities. However enhancing stats and learning skills are still dictated by each Role's Level.
Roles
Paradigms model the Job System of games past while adding some level of customization and restriction. Each character in the field can take on one of six Roles in a Paradigm; any combination of three characters' roles constitutes a Paradigm. Paradigms can be changed during battle with a Paradigm Shift; however, what is more important to the Crystarium System is the particular Roles that each character can take on. The six Roles are as follows:
Japanese | English | Description |
---|---|---|
Attacker (ATK) | Commando (COM) | Build attack chains more easily with enhanced Strength. |
Blaster (BLA) | Ravager (RAV) | Charge enemy chain gauges with concentrated attacks. |
Defender (DEF) | Sentinel (SEN) | Shield allies from enemy attacks with enhanced Defense. |
Enhancer (ENH) | Synergist (SYN) | Support allies with an array of magical enhancements. |
Healer (HLR) | Medic (MED) | Focus on restoring HP and removing status ailments. |
Jammer (JAM) | Saboteur (SAB) | Enfeeble enemies while charging their chain gauges. |
Each character starts out with three specialized Roles. After Chapter 10, players are able to access three other different Roles, and from that point freely switch between Roles to create different Paradigms to be used in battle.
Character | Initial Roles | After Chapter 10 |
---|---|---|
Lightning | Commando, Ravager, Medic | Sentinel, Synergist, Saboteur |
Snow Villiers | Commando, Ravager, Sentinel | Medic, Synergist, Saboteur |
Oerba Dia Vanille | Ravager, Medic, Saboteur | Commando, Sentinel, Synergist |

Hope Estheim | Ravager, Medic, Synergist | Commando, Sentinel, Saboteur |
