Crystal fetters (クリスタルの手錠, Kurisutaru no Tejō?, lit. Crystal Handcuffs) are shackles that prevent magic-use of the one being restrained in Final Fantasy XVI. They are used to disable Bearers' and Dominant's powers. The carefully arranged and activated crystal shards used in the crafting of the shackles prevents aether from flowing through the flesh of the person wearing the fetters, stopping them from casting magicks or priming.[1] Crafting crystal fetters is difficult and costly in both materials and skill, and so they are very rare.
Uses of crystal fetters[]
- The Royal Intelligencers led by Benedikta Harman use crystal fetters to restrain the captured "Dominant of Fire" in Lostwing and Caer Norvent.
- The Men of the Rock use crystal fetters to restrain Clive Rosfield and Jill Warrick in Rosalith Castle, but Gav is able to pick the shackles off Clive.
- The Dhalmekian Republic's minister in Kanver called for Barnabas Tharmr and Sleipnir Harbard to be fettered after the latter admitted to the beastmen armies slaughtering people in Kanver to be aligned with Waloed, but the attempt was stopped by Barnabas killing all present but the two of them with a single slash of Odin's sword.
- Barnabas Tharmr uses crystal fetters to restrain Jill on board the Einherjar.
Behind the scenes[]
Other magic-use disabling means in the Final Fantasy series include the "anti-magic field" in D-District Prison in Final Fantasy VIII, the Wallbreaker Wave in Final Fantasy XV, and the crystal jammer in Final Fantasy Type-0.
