Receives attack in place of a party member.
Description
Cover is a support ability that has the character equipping it shield an adjacent party member from an enemy's single-targeting physical attack while taking half damage from it themselves. It can be combined with other reaction abilities and Defend.
Obtained[]
Cover is learned by Brothers for 100 AP and can be taught to any GF with Knight's Code. Brothers is obtained by fighting the bosses in Tomb of the Unknown King.
Knight's Code[note 1] can be refined from five Holy Wars with Eden's GFAbl Med-RF. Holy Wars are difficult to come by, however.
Mechanics[]
Cover activates when an enemy uses a single-targeting physical attack that would have killed a party member adjacent to the character who has Cover: the coverer steps in to shield the ally while taking half damage from the enemy's attack, and the protected sustaining no damage. Cover works with Counter and Defend, as well as Auto-Potion and Return Damage. Cover will also activate when summoning a GF.
Cover will not activate for party-wide attacks, attacks that deal magic damage or typeless damage, or if the character is disabled by a status effect; e.g. Sleep. Reaction abilities do work during Berserk and Angel Wing. The character with Cover will still shield others even if doing so will kill them.
Use[]
Cover allows the player to protect vulnerable party members with a stronger one; effective junctions on the protector are Vit-J and Vit+% abilities, and Auto-Protect. They also benefit from Evasion junctions to hopefully evade the enemy's attack, and from high HP if they are expected to be receiving damage. The player can also use Auto-Potion to automatically heal them when they shield others.
As Cover works with Defend, the player can nullify all single-target physical damage. Cover works best against an enemy that uses many single-target physical attacks, like Raijin or T-Rexaur, though it would not help against the latter's "tail swipe" attack that targets everyone.
The character with Cover is best placed to the middle of the party formation to cover for both allies on the sides. Cover can be used to protect HP Critical allies kept in that state deliberately to activate Limit Breaks.
Notes[]
- ↑ Knight is a job class in the Final Fantasy series that commonly has Cover. Knight's Code was a relic in Final Fantasy VI that granted access to Cover.
