Cosmo Memory is Red XIII's ultimate Limit in Final Fantasy VII. It is a huge physical attack that hits all enemies for 7.8125 times Red XIII's base damage, allowing it to very easily deal 9999 damage to all enemies and wipe out most mobs of enemies.

Cosmo Memory is notable in that it can be learned easily and early. In the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim, the optional boss Lost Number can be fought by opening the safe. It drops the Cosmo Memory manual, which, once used, teaches Red XIII the ability as long as he has learned all his other Limit Breaks.

Use[]

Cosmo Memory is an easy level 4 Limit Break to acquire, and throughout most of the game, will deal huge amounts of damage due to its high potency. It can be used to wipe waves of enemies quickly, or deal considerable amount of damage to a single-target boss. As it is based on Red XIII's physical damage, it relies on his weapon and Strength stat.

Much later in the game, due to the 9999 damage cap, Cosmo Memory falls off in use in comparison to Red XIII's multi-hit Limit Breaks—Stardust Ray and Earth Rave—which deal much greater single-target damage if each separate hit can reach 9999.

Etymology[]

The name comes from Cosmo Canyon, the town Red XIII was raised to protect. The town is associated with planetology study and has an observatory, and thus its name could come from the word "cosmos". The word Cosmos derives from the Greek term κόσμος (kosmos), literally meaning "order" or "ornament" and metaphorically "world", and is antithetical to the concept of chaos.
